The Strela-2M is a 72 mm surface-to-air missile launcher used by both East German and Polish military forces in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC.

Overview[]

The Strela-2M is a Soviet-made fire-and-forget, infrared-guided surface-to-air missile launcher.

It fires 72 mm missiles fitted with high-explosive (HE) warheads. The launcher features a simple ironsight for aiming and has a maximum lock-on range of 4,500 metres.

It takes four seconds to lock onto a target. The launcher's seeker has a 90% chance of having its lock broken by flare-based countermeasures.

Due to being a single-shot weapon, the Strela-2M can't be reloaded and must be manually discarded by the user once fired. Since carrying a second launcher is not an option, it is optimal to operate Strela-2Ms in teams of at least two to maximise chances of successfully taking down enemy helicopters or planes (in case the first shot misses).

Sight[]

The Strela-2M's sight cannot be manually zeroed. Its off-boresight limit extends to 90 degrees.

The Strela-2M is only capable of loading and firing one type of missile. It is a single-shot weapon and cannot be reloaded:

Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive 95

The missile is launched with an initial velocity of 170 m/s with the motor immediately igniting after 0.25 seconds. It requires a further 6 seconds of flight time to reach a maximum in-flight speed of 500 m/s. The warhead has a blast radius of 6 metres.

Sensors[]

The seeker on the Strela-2M's missiles utilise only one type of sensor for guidance:

Infrared Sensor[]

The missile can lock onto 'hot' targets that are up to 4.5 km away, and is only able to track moving targets that are flying at speeds of up to 1,800 km/h.

The seeker has a horizontal and vertical lock-on cone of 20 degrees in both directions. It has a 90% chance of losing lock to flare countermeasures.

Trivia[]

  • The Strela-2M was only added after Update 1.2 and was not actually included as part of Global Mobilization's launch content.[1]
  • Following the release of Update 1.3, its GRAU index code prefix was omitted entirely from its display name.[2]
    • The update also further increased its susceptibility to defensive flares, increasing from 85% to 90% and rendering it almost useless against NATO aircraft with deployable countermeasures.[2]
