« | The 9K32 Strela-2 'Arrow' (SA-7) is a portable, reloadable launcher capable of firing a 72mm infra-red surface-to-air missile up to 3500m. A later variant the Strela-2M (SA7b) has a greater range of 4,200m. It became the first portable Soviet MANPADS, entering service in 1968 with large scale production starting in the 1970s. The 9K32 Strela-2 is a 72 mm surface-to-air missile launcher used by both the PAVN and Viet Cong guerillas in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.
Overview[]
- This section is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
The 9K32 Strela-2 is a shoulder-launched, fire-and-forget surface-to-air missile launcher.
It loads infrared-guided missiles fitted with 72 mm high-explosive (HE) warheads that are capable of striking both rotary-wing and low-flying fixed-wing aircraft at ranges of up to 3,400 metres.
The launcher uses an ironsight which cannot be enhanced with any magnified optics or image intensifiers. It takes six seconds to lock onto a target. Flare-based countermeasures have a 60% chance of breaking a lock-on.
Variants[]
9K32 Strela-2M[]
The 9K32 Strela-2M is an upgraded iteration of the baseline 9K32 launcher that specifically fires enhanced Strela-2M missiles.
Compared to its parent model, the Strela-2M takes one second less to finish locking on and can acquire targets at distances of up to 4,200 metres away. The Strela-2M's warhead is also more powerful and has slightly better mid-flight manoeuvrability.
In all other aspects, it remains identical to baseline 9K32 launchers. Note that it is not possible to load non-2M missiles into the launcher (and vice versa).
Munitions[]
There are two types of missiles available, though 9K32 launchers are restricted to loading only one type of missile depending on their model:
9K32 Strela-2 Missile[]
Damage type | Base damage value |
---|---|
High-Explosive | 106 |
Fitted with a high-explosive (HE) warhead. It has a weight of 70 "mass" units and can only be loaded by baseline 9K32 Strela-2 (non-M) launchers.
Missiles are launched with an initial velocity of 32 m/s. Exactly 0.25 seconds after, the missile's motor will gradually gain velocity over the course of 20 seconds until it reaches a maximum speed of 430 m/s.
Its warhead has a blast radius of 8 metres. The seeker can lock onto aircraft that are at distances of up to 3.4 km away and are flying at speeds of 792 km/h or less.
9K32 Strela-2M Missile[]
Damage type | Base damage value |
---|---|
High-Explosive | 156 |
Upgraded model fitted with an improved seeker, payload and better flight characteristics. Unlike the baseline Strela missile, the Strela-2M is launched with an initial velocity of 40 m/s and is slightly heavier to carry, weighing 80 "mass" units instead. It can only be loaded by the 9K32 Strela-2M model.
Compared to its baseline counterpart, the Strela-2M's warhead is significantly more powerful and distributes greater damage to targets caught in the blast radius. In addition, the missile has better manoeuvrability in mid-flight and also has an increased maximum speed of 500 m/s.
Although its actual blast radius remains unchanged at 8 metres and the bore limits of its seeker have not been raised, the IR sensor is now capable of locking onto targets that are up to 4.2 km away. Likewise, the maximum velocity limit of a trackable target has also been increased to 936 km/h, allowing it to engage fixed-wing aircraft that are nearly flying at transonic speeds.
Sensors[]
The seeker on the 9K32 missiles utilise only one type of sensor for guidance, though their specifications vary depending on the missile's model:
Infrared Sensor[]
The missile can lock onto 'hot' targets that are up to 3.2 km (non-M) or 4.2 km (M only) away, and is only able to track moving targets that are flying at speeds of up to 792 km/h (non-M) or 936 km/h (M only).
The seeker has a lock-on cone of 120 degrees horizontally and 65 degrees vertically. It has an 80% chance of losing lock to flare countermeasures.
Trivia[]
- Both the PAVN and Viet Cong forces do not utilise handheld Strela-2Ms in normal gameplay, though their rotary-wing aircraft are capable of mounting the improved missile on stub wing pylons.
