Vince Broadale

Vince Broadale is a supporting character in ArmA 3's Apex Protocol campaign.

Background[]

Broadale is a commander of Pacific NATO forces stationed on the Horizon Islands, deployed as part of the "Safe Horizon" joint exercises in cooperation with the local authorities.[1]

He also serves as NATO's liaison to CTRG Group 15, a secretive NATO special operations unit operating independently from his command.[2]

Apex Protocol (2035)[]

Working with its presumed leader Major A.J. Dutton under the callsign of Northstar Actual, Broadale provided logistical support for the unit and in turn, received gathered intelligence in order to better coordinate movements from both sides. Nonetheless, Broadale was often kept in the dark from the more sensitive parts of the operation in order to maintain CTRG's secrecy.[3]

« Dutton: It was unrelated to the Task Force. Not your concern.
Broadale: Looks like you just made it my concern, Major. You haven't told me everything, have you?
Broadale pressures Dutton into revealing the truth behind CTRG's deployment
»

However, after CTRG's operatives were suddenly ambushed and were forced to fight off an unknown CSAT black ops unit[4], Dutton decided to reveal the truth behind their operation to Broadale.

They were searching for a CSAT seismic Weapon of Mass Destruction known only by its codename of "Project Eastwind". Captain Scott Miller, one of the senior CTRG operatives that Dutton's men had just rescued, would later reveal to Broadale that CSAT were attempting to undermine the Horizon Islands government by supplying the Syndikat insurgents with weapons and funding. This was all being carried out as part of a wider CSAT strategy known only as the "Apex Protocol".[5]

On August 18th, 2035, at the height of CTRG's operation in the Tanoa Province, Broadale offered to send troops to assist the operatives with their raid on the Blue Pearl Industrial Port.[6] However, due to the sensitive nature of the operation coupled with the risk of causing damage to Eastwind, Broadale's forces could only remain on standby, leaving CTRG to carry out the raid alone.[7]

Post-Apex Protocol[]

« CSAT strategy amounts to a flagrant act of terrorism [...] an illegal, immoral, and indefensible act of war.
Broadale releases an official statement to the media
»

Following the revelations, Broadale, alongside other senior NATO officials[8], were quick to publicly voice condemnation of CSAT's so-called "Apex Protocol" strategy.[9]

In an official statement, Broadale even went so far as to label the coalition's expansionist behaviour as nothing short of an "act of war".[9] Not long after he issued the statement to the media, Broadale would return to join Dutton and Miller to observe their handiwork. He questioned the duo regarding the lack of mention of Eastwind's existence, though Miller would not elaborate further on its status other than that it was "in safe hands".[10]

In light of the crisis, Exercise Safe Horizon would be approved for an extended deployment. In addition, NATO representatives at the UN Security Council are due to push forward a plan that would see to Safe Horizon's mandate being extended to the hotly contested South China Sea region. If approved, Broadale's forces would be permitted to conduct peacekeeping operations in the region.[11]

Trivia[]

  • Like Dutton, Broadale never physically appears in any of the briefings and can only be heard in the pre-recorded cutscenes talking with Dutton, or through radio messages.
  • He is the first named Australian character in ArmA 3, and is the second to be introduced into the series after Patrick Dixon from ArmA 2's Private Military Company DLC.
  • Oddly enough, Broadale is stated to be a commander of Pacific NATO forces despite Australia not being an actual member of the alliance in real life. Whether this implies that Australia has become an official NATO member in the Armaverse is not known.

[...] MILLER: Over the past 4 weeks I've been on the ground and - in the last 4 days - focused on the Northern Division. BROADALE: Wait. You guys have been operating here before we brought you in to deal with our Syndikat problem? [...] Yes. Although the connection wasn't clear, at first. It's clear now that a covert CSAT presence has been giving Syndikat all sorts of hardware. [...] As we understand it, they aim to destabilise the region by proxy. In fact, it's my opinion that they're responsible for the Pacific disaster itself."
