The CH-47D is a heavy transport helicopter used exclusively by U.S. military forces in ArmA: Cold War Assault.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Troop transport
« The Boeing CH-47D Chinook is a twin-turbine, tandem-rotor, heavy-lift transport helicopter. Boeing in Philadelphia manufactures the CH-47D for military customers around the world. More than 600 are currently in service internationally.

Design[]

The CH-47D is the U.S. military's primary heavy troop and supply transport aircraft. First fielded during the Vietnam War, the CH-47D is an upgraded CH-47C that has been enhanced with better engines and composite rotor blades to increase its airworthiness in battle.

Armament
It is armed with a single .50 cal heavy machine gun that is fitted onto the left-side window.[CfgVh 5] The HMG feeds from a single 500-round belt box but cannot be reloaded without a supply truck to support it.

Features
The CH-47D is the largest transport helicopter available to U.S. forces in Cold War Assault. Both the U.S. military's own UH-60 and the Soviet Mi-17 are only capable of transporting thirteen passengers at once whereas the CH-47D allows for up to twenty-four to be carried at once[CfgVh 1], which is almost more than double the capacity of the two. This means that three full-size U.S. squads can be airlifted into battle - an impressive feat unmatched by any other helicopter.

Its large airframe also grants it higher resilience to damage compared to the other two; though it should be noted that by no means does this make it immune to ground fire.

Drawbacks
Although it has the advantage of being able to carry so many passengers at once, the CH-47D lack of heavy weaponry essentially makes it the least versatile transport in its class.

Unlike the rocket-armed UH-60/Mi-17 for example, the CH-47D can only fall back onto its HMG for self defence.[CfgVh 5] Whereas the other two helicopters are able to serve as light gunships after dropping off their passengers, the CH-47D's HMG is fairly lacklustre in comparison and cannot suppress enemies as effectively as the former two's rocket pods.

Last but not least, the CH-47D's bulky size means that it will have difficulty landing in areas without plenty of clearance. This limits the number of areas that it can operate it as it won't be able to drop-off or pick up passengers unless they're out in an open area.

Crew Capacity
The CH-47D has a total capacity of twenty-six seats. Of these, one is reserved for the pilot and another for the left-side window gunner. The remainder of the seats will allow for twenty-four passengers to be transported at a time.[CfgVh 1]

Protection[]

The CH-47D has 60 points worth of armour plating.[CfgVh 6]

Armament[]

The gunner position controls the M2 .50 heavy machine gun:

M2 .50[]

Spill damage value 4[CfgAm 2]
Muzzle velocity (m/s) 1,000[CfgWp 1]

Window-mounted .50 cal heavy machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 600 rounds per minute[CfgWp 2][Formula 1] and has a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s.[CfgWp 1] Accuracy-wise, the M2 has a dispersion of 0.0007 rad.[CfgWp 3] The bullets have a spill radius of 0.2 metres upon impact.[CfgAm 3]

The gun mount can be swivelled up to a maximum of 180 degrees horizontally[CfgVh 7][CfgVh 8], but is vertically restricted to an elevation of 5 degrees[CfgVh 9] and a depression of 42 degrees.[CfgVh 10]

AI[]

NOTE: The following information only applies to the AI.

Camouflage rating[]

Main article: AI Basics: Detection

The CH-47D has a camouflage[2] rating of 2.[CfgVh 11]

Cost[]

Main article: AI Basics: Targeting priority

The CH-47D has a cost[3] value of 10000000.[CfgVh 12]

Threat values[]

Main article: AI Basics: Targeting priority

The CH-47D is considered to be a low-risk threat[4] to AI-controlled infantry units (0.3) and a medium threat by other aircraft (0.4). However, ground vehicles consider the CH-47D to be an extremely dangerous threat and will prioritise attacking it if possible (1).[CfgVh 13]

Noise factor[]

Main article: AI Basics: Detection

The CH-47D has an audible[5] factor of 10.[CfgVh 14]

Trivia[]

  • The CH-47D was not actually included as part of the default set of helicopters that could be flown in Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (the initial release name of Cold War Assault), and was only added with the release of Patch 1.20.[1][6]
  • Due to technical limitations faced by the early iterations of the RV engine (Real Virtuality) used by Cold War Assault, the in-game CH-47D is only able to support a single window gunner.
