Vehicle Description
»

Design

The Sopwith F.1 Camel is a single-engined fighter plane.

Armament
Both Camel variants are armed with a fixed, forward-facing .303 machine gun and free-falling grenades that can be dropped onto targets directly below it.

The .303 MG feeds from a single 500 round belt and carries up to 10 grenades at a time.

Features
An antiquated relic of the First World War, the Camel is a fighter plane that can fulfil both light air-to-ground fire support and limited air-to-air interdiction roles.

Mobility
Unlike the Plane, the Camel's handling and acceleration are vastly inferior in comparison. It loses speed quite rapidly whenever making any sharp turns and will struggle to reach its top speed even on a level flight path.

Drawbacks
It transports one less passenger compared to the Plane for instance, and lacks the guided ordnance of dedicated CAS jets like the A-10 and Su-25. Both the pilot and passengers are also exposed to enemy fire since they do not sit inside an enclosed cabin.

Overall, this makes the Sopwith Camel more of a novelty civilian enthusiast plane rather than an aircraft that has any real use on a modern battlefield.

Crew Capacity
Aside from the pilot, both Camel variants can transport up to two additional passengers as well.

Camouflage

  • Red: Standard olive drab paint scheme with a red-coloured engine. Used on U.S. military Sopwith Camels.
  • White: Olive drab paint scheme with a white-coloured engine. Only utilised by Soviet Sopwith Camels.

Protection

The Sopwith F.1 Camel has 15 points worth of armour plating.

Armament

The pilot controls both weapon systems on the Camel:

Vickers

Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
20 600

Twin machine guns. Serves as the Camel's primary form of armament.

It retains a muzzle velocity of 600 m/s and can reach fire rates of approximately ~ 461 rounds per minute. The bullets retain a small radius of 0.2 metres upon impact.

Grenade

Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive 50

High-explosive (HE) grenades used to bombard structures and unarmoured, stationary ground vehicles.

There is a forced one second delay in-between drops. These "mini-bombs" have a blast radius of 10 metres.

Trivia

  • Both variants of the Camel were not initially available as part of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (the original title for Cold War Assault).
    • Though it is now integrated as part of the base game's content for Cold War Assault, the DLC itself was only available as a separate downloadable patch a short while after the Resistance expansion pack's release.
  • To date, Cold War Assault's Camel is the oldest vehicle in the entire series, predating the An-2 in ArmA 2's Operation Arrowhead expansion by more than two decades.

« The Sopwith Camel is a famous British biplane fighter, and one of the icons of WWI air warfare along with its chief rival, the German Fokker Dr.I Triplane.
Library Description

Design

The Camel remains as a simple fighter plane in Armed Assault, though there are some minor differences to its Cold War Assault predecessor.

Armament
It continues to retain the same armament of the Cold War Assault Sopwith Camel, which consists of twin 7.7 mm MGs and air-to-ground free-falling grenade bombs.

The twin Vickers feed from a single 500-round belt, though the Camel only carries 6 grenades for bombing purposes.

Features
Just like its predecessor, the Armed Assault Camel is no different and remains as an outdated multi-role fighter plane which can be brought to bear against both air and ground targets.

Mobility
Its remains just as cumbersome to fly as it did in Cold War Assault, though the Armed Assault Camel has (very slightly) decent agility at low altitudes compared to jet fighters like the Su-34.

Drawbacks
The Camel still remains largely redundant once again in the face of modern jet-engine aircraft. It can only fall back onto its twin MGs for self-defence against other aircraft, which itself is not particularly powerful or accurate by any measure of standard.

In addition, the Armed Assault Camel does not retain the ability to carry any passengers as well, which means it can no longer serve as a rudimentary transport plane.

Crew Capacity
The Camel only contains a single seat for the pilot. It is unable to carry any additional passengers or crewmen.

Camouflage

  • Red: Standard olive drab paint scheme with a red-coloured engine. Used on U.S. Army Camels.
  • White: Olive drab paint scheme with a white-coloured engine. Only utilised by SLA Camels.

Protection

Camels have base armour values of 15.

Hull

The plane's hull can only withstand a meagre 15 points of damage. Destruction of the hull will result in a total loss.

Armament

The pilot exclusively handles both of the Camel's weapons:

Vickers

Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
15 740

Twin 7.7 mm machine guns.

They have muzzle velocities of 740 m/s and can attain fire rates of up to 1,200 RPM. The bullets have a spill radius of 0.3 metres upon impact.

Grenade

Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive 20

HE grenade "bombs". Strong against clumped-up infantry but redundant against armoured ground vehicles and structures.

They are dropped with an initial velocity of 3 m/s and have a blast radius of 5 metres upon impact.

Trivia

  • Prior to Patch 1.05, the Camel's pilot was able to toggle a GPS display. This capability was subsequently removed with the update's release.
