Carl Owen is a minor character in ArmA 3's Stepping Stone mini-campaign.
Background[]
Owen is an infantryman in the U.S. Army's 21st Brigade Combat Team, 111th Infantry Division (21st BCT, 111th ID).
He serves as the marksman of his squad, callsign Alpha, and is subordinate to squad leader Sergeant Jared Spender.
Stepping Stone (2035)[]
Responding to the unprovoked attack on the peacekeepers of Task Force Aegis, NATO MEDCOM has authorised the immediate deployment of the brigade to counter the Altian government's act of aggression.[1][2]
Before the invasion of Altis can commence however, the strategic microstate of Malden controls vital air corridors between the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. With Malden under CSAT influence, the risk of the invasion failing was too high without the guarantee of air superiority. There was only one option for the task force: invading the island to secure its airbases for the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet to sail through safely.[1][3][4]
Once the 6th Fleet was within striking distance of Malden's shores, Owen was amongst the initial group of soldiers that would be leading the main ground offensive. His squad, callsign Alpha, would be one of the many ground elements placed in charge of securing Cancon, a major settlement located west of their landing zone in Le Port.[5]
Owen would remain behind in reserve and would not be joining the rest of his squad in the first phase of the assault. As morning turned to noon, Owen finally rejoined his squad and boarded an armoured personnel carrier bound north.[1][6] With the support of other infantry squads from Bravo and callsign Charlie's tanks, they were to secure the towns of Houdan and Dourdan and were tasked with cutting off the MSR that the North Africans were using.[7] They soon arrived on the outskirts of Houdan and leaped straight into the fire. It didn't take long for the North African defences to fall, and in less than an hour Houdan was already under their complete control.[8]
The next target was an ammunition depot located to the town's east, as well as Dourdan itself. Owen's team cleared out the defenders at the depot, and then boarded another APC to get to Dourdan.[9] However, the situation was about to go downhill quite rapidly. His squad leader, Spender, had just gotten new information that a large counterattacking wave of tanks were racing towards them from La Trinité.[10][11]
To make matters worse, Owen's squad wouldn't be getting any reinforcements; other than Charlie's tanks, the bulk of the BCT's heavy armour weren't available[12] and they'd have to make do with what assets they had on station.[13] Owen's squad and the rest of the troops at Dourdan fought hard and against all odds, succeeded in putting a decisive stop to the North African counterattack. Shortly after, it was announced that the North Africans capitulated and chose to surrender, rather than fight to the death.[14]
Personality and Appearance[]
Owen is an African-American male with a mostly shaved head of black hair. He wears MTP-camouflaged fatigues and a ranger green-coloured plate carrier vest. For head protection, he wears a customised helmet with a spraypainted camouflage pattern.
Trivia[]
- Despite being a member of Alpha, Owen strangely only appears in the mini-campaign's second mission.
- Owen's dialogue in the APC will differ depending on how well Spender managed in the previous mission. Losing most or all squad members will result in Owen mocking Spender for his lack of leadership skills and incompetence[15], whereas not losing anyone will result in the default banter between the two[6].
