« I'm just saying. We wouldn't be in this mess if we'd never left. I mean, accidentally blowing up our own research station? Killing a bunch of local workers...
Carl Owen

Carl Owen is a minor character in ArmA 3's Stepping Stone mini-campaign.

Background[]

Owen is an infantryman in the U.S. Army's 21st Brigade Combat Team, 111th Infantry Division (21st BCT, 111th ID).

He serves as the marksman of his squad, callsign Alpha, and is subordinate to squad leader Sergeant Jared Spender.

Stepping Stone (2035)[]

Responding to the unprovoked attack on the peacekeepers of Task Force Aegis, NATO MEDCOM has authorised the immediate deployment of the brigade to counter the Altian government's act of aggression.[1][2]

Before the invasion of Altis can commence however, the strategic microstate of Malden controls vital air corridors between the Straits of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. With Malden under CSAT influence, the risk of the invasion failing was too high without the guarantee of air superiority. There was only one option for the task force: invading the island to secure its airbases for the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet to sail through safely.[1][3][4]

Once the 6th Fleet was within striking distance of Malden's shores, Owen was amongst the initial group of soldiers that would be leading the main ground offensive. His squad, callsign Alpha, would be one of the many ground elements placed in charge of securing Cancon, a major settlement located west of their landing zone in Le Port.[5]

Owen would remain behind in reserve and would not be joining the rest of his squad in the first phase of the assault. As morning turned to noon, Owen finally rejoined his squad and boarded an armoured personnel carrier bound north.[1][6] With the support of other infantry squads from Bravo and callsign Charlie's tanks, they were to secure the towns of Houdan and Dourdan and were tasked with cutting off the MSR that the North Africans were using.[7] They soon arrived on the outskirts of Houdan and leaped straight into the fire. It didn't take long for the North African defences to fall, and in less than an hour Houdan was already under their complete control.[8]

The next target was an ammunition depot located to the town's east, as well as Dourdan itself. Owen's team cleared out the defenders at the depot, and then boarded another APC to get to Dourdan.[9] However, the situation was about to go downhill quite rapidly. His squad leader, Spender, had just gotten new information that a large counterattacking wave of tanks were racing towards them from La Trinité.[10][11]

To make matters worse, Owen's squad wouldn't be getting any reinforcements; other than Charlie's tanks, the bulk of the BCT's heavy armour weren't available[12] and they'd have to make do with what assets they had on station.[13] Owen's squad and the rest of the troops at Dourdan fought hard and against all odds, succeeded in putting a decisive stop to the North African counterattack. Shortly after, it was announced that the North Africans capitulated and chose to surrender, rather than fight to the death.[14]

Personality and Appearance[]

Owen is an African-American male with a mostly shaved head of black hair. He wears MTP-camouflaged fatigues and a ranger green-coloured plate carrier vest. For head protection, he wears a customised helmet with a spraypainted camouflage pattern.

Trivia[]

  • Despite being a member of Alpha, Owen strangely only appears in the mini-campaign's second mission.
  • Owen's dialogue in the APC will differ depending on how well Spender managed in the previous mission. Losing most or all squad members will result in Owen mocking Spender for his lack of leadership skills and incompetence[15], whereas not losing anyone will result in the default banter between the two[6].

Finally, NATO got their act together. Launched an assault on the Altis mainland. BISHOP: And CSAT? MACDADE: Caught off-guard by the whole thing. They were there to fight guerrillas, not start World War Three. So, when CSAT dropped their support? Government forces panicked. They were on the back foot - needed to regroup. Major Gavras was put in charge, but that was a tall order. Gavras tried to fortify their position in the north west. But, it was a risk - and he ended up cut off. The guerrillas? They didn't hesitate. Stormed his position - sent the survivors running."

NATO reinforcements, responding to a surprise attack on Stratis, must intercede. There are no good options. Air superiority over the Gibraltar Straits must be secured. The invasion simply cannot fail."

ARMA 3: Tac-Ops 2017 [Video Game], Bohemia Interactive a.s., Stepping Stone, Fait Accompli, "After our exit and the catastrophic handling of Cold War-era stockpiles, Malden has drifted into CSAT's sphere of influence. Our former base, here, to the north of the main airport, is now a major concern. China's got a squadron of long-range aircraft there. Shikras. Brass tacks: we need air superiority over the Gibraltar Straits - if we don't have that, we can't invade Altis and Stratis."

ARMA 3: Tac-Ops 2017 [Video Game], Bohemia Interactive a.s., Stepping Stone, Fait Accompli, "Having gained a foothold in the south around the harbor at Le Port, we now need to push westwards, towards Chapoi and Cancon. A supply depot and causality collection point will be our primary targets. 1. Secure AT defences around Point Crestone. 2. Eliminate any enemy forces garrisoned at Point Blackburn. 3. Together with other units, capture the fuel depot at Point Charleston. 4. Contact Delta team and greenlight the diversionary attack on the harbor at Point Massive. 5. Move in and assault the medical camp at Point Crillon. Remember to check your fire. Obviously, injured combatants are not legitimate targets."

I mean, accidentally blowing up our own research station? Killing a bunch of local workers... Hey, Spender! SPENDER: What? OWEN: You know what's going on out there, yet? SPENDER: Nope. Only that we're kicking some ass... OWEN: Yeah, sure, just not in St. Louis, right? SPENDER: There too, if we can pull this off. OWEN: Like this morning. SPENDER: Exactly. That was fucking textbook, man."

The towns of Chapoi and Cancon, as well as the strategic harbor at La Riviere, are all in our control. More importantly, Malden's capital, La Trinité, is hanging by a thread. By advancing northand striking Houdan and Dourdan, we can isolate the city and prevent critical supplies reaching the frontlines around Saint Louis. If we play our cards right, this could be over in a matter of hours."

There's enough weapons and ammo here to start World War fucking Three, over. GUARDIAN: Copy your last, Alpha, we'll send a group to hold it. RV with that APC at the crossroads, grid 075-062. Assume command, then approach Point Yellowstone, out."

STURROCK: Renforts? FAHIM: Euh... oui, vos renforts. Vous comptez nous déployer quelque part? [ FAHIM: Don't panic, Corporal. The Americans don't know what they've gotten themselves into. I received a communique. Reinforcements will be arriving from La Trinité. If we can keep them here as long as we have, our Chinese friends will-- STURROCK: Wait, what? FAHIM: Nothing. Expect a full cessation of hostilities within the hour! Out."

SPENDER: Work it out, dick wad."
