The Carrier Special Rig is a ballistic-resistant vest worn by NATO forces in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

The Carrier Special Rig is a heavy plate carrier vest that is outfitted with additional ceramic armour plates.[1] It has a "mass" of 120 units[CfgWp 1] and provides a carrying capacity of 100 "mass".[CfgWp 2]

Specifically worn by NATO squad leaders, combat life savers and other specialist infantry classes, the Carrier Special Rig is rated at Level V protection standards.

It offers the greatest level of protection to its wearer out of all protective vests in ArmA 3. At full "health", the wearer can consistently survive being struck by two 7.62 mm rounds (both NATO and non-NATO) at point blank range to their chest, diaphragm and abdomen. This is because all three parts of the vest retain an impressive damage reduction modifier of 90%.[CfgWp 3][CfgWp 4][CfgWp 5] The neck[CfgWp 6] and shoulders[CfgWp 7] are also shielded by protective guards, though they are not meant to protect the wearer from ballistic projectiles and only minimise damage from indirect explosions.

Depending on the range at which they were fired and the velocity of incoming bullets at the time of impact, the wearer can potentially survive even more damage at distances beyond ~ 400 metres due to its very high damage reduction modifier. This especially applies if the wearer is quickly healed after being struck the first time.

Unfortunately, the Carrier Special Rig's impressive protection capabilities do come at a steep price and trades storage space for protection rather inefficiently. With a maximum capacity of only 100 "mass" units[CfgWp 2], the Carrier Special Rig limits the wearer to bringing along at most ten rifle magazines or several grenades while consuming a disproportionately greater amount of stamina.[CfgWp 1] Without a backpack, the wearer will almost certainly run out of ammunition/breath after a few firefights or a short sprint; whichever occurs first.

Lastly, it should be noted that the wearer's pelvis is not covered by a blast protector. It is not classified as an explosive-resistant vest since the wearer's legs remain exposed. As a result, the Carrier Special Rig will not allow the wearer to survive damage caused by a grenade exploding at their feet (as opposed to the Carrier GL Rig).

Trivia[]

  • Just like the Carrier GL Rig, the Carrier Special Rig originally used the same model as the (non-GL) Carrier Rig prior to the Marksmen DLC's release.[2]
  • At ArmA 3's launch, the Carrier Special Rig was only available in Green and Black. Later DLC releases (included freely as part of their platform updates) would add the MTP (Marksmen)[2], Tropic (Apex)[3], and Woodland (Contact)[4] camouflage variants.
  • Although listed as Marksmen content, the Carrier Special Rig is a free asset from the DLC's platform update and does not require ownership of the DLC to use.[5]
