Carbines are essentially short-barrelled versions of assault rifles. They often fire the same ammunition as their full-length rifle counterparts but some may shoot lower-powered rounds, including types designed for pistols.
A drawback of their design is reduced muzzle velocity and range which, while still greater than that of submachine guns, often limits their effective firing range to just under 300-400 metres.
