The D-30 is a static howitzer featured in ArmA: Armed Assault and ArmA 2.

ArmA: Armed Assault[]

« The D-30 122mm howitzer, also known as the 2A18M Lyagushka, has a revolving mount that permits 360 traverse and is designed for both high and low angles of fire, making it fully suitable for fire support and anti-tank defense.

The D-30 is used exclusively by the SLA in ArmA: Armed Assault.

Overview[]

The D-30 is designed to provide direct and indirect fire support to troops in the field.

The standard loadout of the D-30 gives it 30 rounds of high-explosive (HE) shells. The shells are fired with an initial velocity of 1,100 m/s, and can devastate infantry and unarmoured/light vehicles caught within a blast radius of 30 metres.

It takes 7 seconds to reload a new shell (averaging ~ 8 rounds per minute). If the D-30 has been fully depleted, it takes 8 seconds to rearm its stockpile completely.

Range-wise, the D-30 has an effective firing range of between 1,800 metres up to 12,000 metres.

Arma1-d30-00

Although not particularly accurate and cumbersome to rotate, the D-30 can be quite devastating in direct fire mode.

Like its American-made counterpart, the D-30 can be utilised either for direct or indirect fire. In both cases, its HE shells are almost twice as powerful and can drive back tanks and infantry alike. Even the M1A1 can be taken down after three/four strikes, though the D-30 must score direct hits in order to inflict sufficient damage in this way.

However, the D-30 faces the same problems as its American counterpart; since the D-30's gun cannot be rotated quickly, the crew (consisting of the gunner and two additional "passengers") are vulnerable to enemy infantry that manage to get within the howitzer's minimum firing range.

Most vehicles will also be much faster than the D-30 can turn, allowing fast attack vehicles to easily avoid the HE blast from its shells. Needless to say, using the D-30 in a direct fire role is not recommended unless there's absolutely no other option.

Munitions[]

The D-30 can only be loaded with one type of shell:

Damage type Base damage value Launch velocity (m/s)
High-Explosive 340 1,100

The D-30's 122 mm HE shells have a blast radius of 30 metres. They are always fired with an initial velocity of 1,100 m/s and can potentially reach a maximum velocity of up to 1,300 m/s.

Trivia[]

  • Like the M119, the extra "crew" positions do not actually affect how fast the D-30 is reloaded even if they are unoccupied by crewmen.
  • Although the real D-30 is designed with such capability in mind, the in-game D-30 cannot be towed as Armed Assault's iteration of the Real Virtuality engine doesn't support vehicle towing simulation.
  • Both the D-30 and the M119 were the first two static artillery "turrets" in the series.

ArmA 2[]

« The D-30 122mm howitzer, also known as the 2A18M Lyagushka, has a revolving mount that permits 360 degree rotation and is designed for both high and low angles of fire making it fully suitable for fire support and anti-tank defense.

The D-30 is used by several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

The ArmA 2 D-30 remains mostly identical to its predecessor in Armed Assault.

Just like before, the D-30 still fires 122 mm high-explosive (HE) shells, of which it carries 30 ready-to-fire shells at all times. The shells themselves have a blast radius of 30 metres.

However, its shells now have a much lower velocity of only 389 m/s. In spite of this, its maximum firing range has actually been increased to 19,000 metres instead.

In addition, the D-30 now supports loading and firing different types of shells with unique payloads (on top of standard HE). This includes:

  • White Phosphorous (WP) shells, highly devastating against clumped-up infantry
  • Sense and Destroy ARMor (SADARM) anti-tank shells, which automatically home in onto nearby enemy vehicles at the impact point
  • Laser-Guided (LG) shells, which will lock onto any laser spots projected by handheld designators or markers once they arrive close to the strike zone
  • Illumination flare shells, harmless rounds which project artificial light over the targeted area for a short amount of time
  • Smoke shells, which instantly create a thick cloud of white smoke for concealment at the target location on impact

Another positive change to the D-30 has been its rate of fire; unlike in Armed Assault and assuming that the D-30 is not using a specific firing solution, it can attain a fire rate of one shell every 6 seconds (10 RPM). It also only takes 2 seconds to fully rearm the D-30 if its stockpile has been emptied.

Munitions[]

NOTE: Although listed here, it is not possible to load any of the following munitions aside from HE into the D-30 during normal gameplay. The following statistics only apply if fired through scripted methods via the Artillery Module.

Shell type Damage type Base damage value Launch velocity (m/s)
HE High-Explosive 340 389
WP (Primary) High-Explosive 60 389
WP (Secondary) High-Explosive 5 N/A
SADARM (Primary) Kinetic 20 389
SADARM (Secondary) Kinetic 330 N/A
LG High-Explosive 340 389
Illumination Kinetic 8 389
Smoke High-Explosive 8 389

The D-30 can be loaded with six types of shells, though only one kind (HE) is available by default:

  • HE: 30 metre blast radius. Effective against infantry and most ground vehicles.
  • WP: 30 metre blast radius (initial). Non-vehicle targets entering the smoke cloud will take damage if caught within the blast zone.
  • SADARM: 20 metre blast radius (initial). Upon reaching a height of 500 metres above the impact zone, the shell's submunition will deploy itself and target the closest vehicle. The submunition has a blast radius of 7 metres and strikes with a velocity of 800 m/s.
  • LG: 30 metre blast radius. Once the shell reaches a distance of 1,000 metres above the target area, it will begin seeking a laser spot to home into. If there are no laser spots detected, the shell will simply strike a random location within the impact zone.
  • Illumination: Illuminates the target zone. The flare will burn for 30 seconds.
  • Smoke: Blankets the impact zone with a cloud of thick white-coloured smoke. It takes 4 seconds to fully form and will last for a total of 60 seconds.

Trivia[]

  • Like the M119A1, the base version of ArmA 2 did not actually provide different types of munitions for the D-30. The Operation Arrowhead expansion pack subsequently added the additional shell types after its release.
    • Similarly however, these shells are not available as part of the D-30's stockpile by default. They can only be added via custom addons or through editor scripting commands.
    • Many of the extra munition types are not also actually functional even if they are added to the D-30. This is due to them being intended for use with ArmA 2's Artillery module, which is what actually gives those shell types their attributes (flares, smoke, etc.).
