East Germany (formally referred to as the German Democratic Republic or GDR for short) is a REDFOR faction in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC.
Overview[]
Stationed along the border with West Germany, an unknown-sized formation of motorised/mechanised infantry[1] backed by special operations teams and heavy armour from the National People's Army (German: Nationale Volksarmee, NVA for short) are responsible for the defence of the East German state.
As a founding member of the Warsaw Treaty Organization (WTO), the NVA serves as a bulwark against the ever-present threat of NATO imperialism. Should the opportunity arise, they will lead the charge west in order to liberate their occupied brethren.[2]
Grenztruppen der DDR[]
The Border Troops of the German Democratic Republic maintain security along the fortified border with West Germany. In the event of armed conflict, the Grenztruppen act in a support role, providing combat support for the NVA.[3]
Diensteinheit IX[]
Analogous to their West German counterpart, DIX tactical police teams are an elite unit of the Volkspolizei that utilise a mix of Eastern and Western bloc equipment.[4] They support the Grenztruppen in counter-terrorism and other high-risk operations.
Equipment[]
1980s[]

Camouflage schemes used by 1980s forces:
- Strichtarn (Left)
- Black (Centre)
- Winter (Right)
Throughout the 1980s, conventional infantry and special operations teams were issued field service uniforms camouflaged in either a winter-themed pattern for cold weather operations, or Strichtarn for all other seasons. Alternately, ground vehicle crewmen wear uniforms coloured completely in a dull black scheme.
Body armour vests are rarely available, with almost all units in the region only wearing Strichtarn-camouflaged chest rigs and load bearing harnesses/tactical vests. Some specialist troops may wear dust goggles to shield their eyes from harmful particles, whilst SchM-41M gasmasks are worn when forces are expected to fight in contaminated environments.
For headgear, border guards only don side caps while conventional soldiers are given the standard-issue, ballistic-resistant M56 steel helmet. SOF personnel prefer to wear berets to signify their elite status amongst regular forces, though specialist troops may don FJH Model 4 helmets on occasion. Lastly, fixed- and rotary-wing aircrews are given the ZSh-3, a Soviet-made flight helmet.
M56 helmets usually have a camouflage cover applied to them, though some feature a dark olive green-coloured mesh instead. Units deployed abroad on UN-mandated peacekeeping missions wore highly-visible, light blue-coloured covers to denote their neutrality.
1990s[]

Camouflage schemes used by 1990s forces:
- Strichtarn (Left)
- Strichtarn-Green (Centre-left)
- Black (Centre-right)
- Winter (Right)
As the Cold War drags on into the 1990s, the NVA has slowly begun to modernise itself under the Uniform Trials (UTV) programme. As part of the programme's ongoing changes, NVA personnel are now issued the latest UTV field service uniform.
For personal protection, the iconic M56 steel helmet has been replaced with the newer M86 helmet - essentially a shorter derivative of the M56. The BESPA armour vest system has also been slowly rolled out alongside newer UTV webbing, providing frontline infantry units with ballistic protection in addition to more ergonomic load bearing rigs. For SOF units, Polish-made Ochra flak vests have begun to proliferate, though their overall equipment suite remains largely unchanged from the previous decade.
The Strichtarn pattern continues to remain as the NVA's choice of camouflage. However, an experimental green version of Strichtarn is also now available, though it is seldom used in lieu of the non-green Strichtarn pattern which remains standard-issue.

Trivia[]
- Special operations units were not originally included as part of Global Mobilization's launch content and were only added after the release of Update 1.2.[5]
- DIX units were not added as a sub-faction to the Grenztruppen until the release of Update 1.5.[6]
- A hypothetical representation of what the NVA would have looked like in the 1990s had it continued to exist (if German reunification had not occurred) was finally added in Update 1.6.[7]
- The information below details unused, pre-release or removed content.
- When the TO&E was being planned out for 1990s NVA forces, the developers initially considered assigning 5.56 mm-chambered Wieger StG-940 assault rifles as the faction's service weapon.[8] However, this design choice was thought to be far too unrealistic even by the standards of a fictitious 1990s East Germany[9], and the developers ultimately opted to stick with 5.45 mm-chambered MPi AK-74Ns instead.[10]
