Mission Description

Empty Wasteland is the final mission of ArmA 2's non-canonical Eagle Wing campaign.

Overview[]

The player controls former U.S. Navy aviator Ed Winter. Having fought their way past crazed bands of ChDKZ and CDF survivors, Winter and Lev Zotkin's ragtag squad have managed to salvage a usable boat.

However, the boat is leaking and can only take six of them to the fallout shelter on Utes. To keep things fair, Zotkin has decided to have them all draw matchsticks - the one who pulls the shortest matchstick will be the one who has to stay behind.

Walkthrough[]

This "mission" simply serves as an epilogue based on the choice you made in the previous mission. The outcome will differ depending on which individual draws the shortest matchstick:

Endless Waiting
NOTE: This ending will be chosen if Winter picks the shortest matchstick.

« Winter: NO! You can't leave me here! I thought we were a team!
Zotkin: Sorry, Pilot. War is not fair. Farewell.
»
Winter is forced to stay behind as he watches the six survivors depart for Utes. As the camera pans away, insurgents can be seen walking towards him but Winter appears to have given up all hope at this point and does nothing to stop them.

Enemy Wins
NOTE: This ending will be chosen if Mikhail Istcov picks the shortest matchstick.

« No fucking way! I'm not staying here! DIE, AMERICAN! »
Outraged by being the unlucky "volunteer", Istcov refuses to stay behind and kills Winter as revenge for his helicopter getting shot down by him several hours earlier. In turn, Zotkin and the rest of the survivors raise their weapons and kill Istcov.

Escape Way
NOTE: This ending will be chosen if Lev Zotkin or another member of his Spetsnaz team picks the shortest matchstick.

« War is not fair. Gregorij is taking over command. Give me a machinegun, I'll make sure no one bothers you on the way.
If Zotkin is chosen
»
« Pity, he was a good soldier. War is not fair.
If a different member is chosen
»
Either Zotkin or another member of the Spetsnaz squad stays behind to hold off the insurgents. Winter and the others sail away but can only watch as they put up a valiant (but ultimately futile) last stand. He is soon killed by a hail of gunfire and rockets.

As the credits roll, a map of the world is displayed. The United States and Russia succeed in destroying each other in a strategic nuclear exchange. The nuclear holocaust quickly extends to the rest of the planet, with other nations facing the same fate...

Trivia[]

  • At the very end of the credits, Utes is also shown being struck by a nuclear missile, suggesting that the island's fallout shelter was essentially a deathtrap for the remaining survivors.
  • A very faint text outline of "WTF? ^^" is written over the Australian continent. This is a reference to an old Flash animation titled "End Of Ze World", created by Jason Windsor and posted onto an animation website called Albino Blacksheep.
