The Enhanced Combat Helmet is a ballistic-resistant helmet used by both NATO forces and in limited numbers with CTRG operatives in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

Fitted with several rail-mounted accessories and a headset, the Enhanced Combat Helmet is an "upgraded" model of the basic Combat Helmet worn by U.S. Army infantrymen. It has a weight of 50 "mass" units[CfgWp 1] and is rated at Level IV protection standards.

Unlike the basic Combat Helmet, the ECH provides better resistance to both small arms fire and indirect explosions. At point blank range, the user will be able to survive being hit by a single intermediate rifle bullet or up to two 9 mm rounds (and potentially up to three at longer distances).

The only drawback to the ECH stems from its weight since it weighs 50% more than the baseline Combat Helmet (an increase of 20 "mass" units). Since the overall dimensions of the helmet have not changed from its parent design, the user's face and lower parts of their head still remain exposed to damage from explosions and gunfire.

Camouflage[]

  • Black: Black paint finish with desert sand-coloured rails/frame. Used by Mediterranean NATO specialists.
  • Desert: Arid spraypaint pattern meant to mimic a snake's skin.
  • Grass: Semi-arid spraypaint scheme meant to imitate blades of grass.
  • Khaki: Dark mud brown paint finish with sage green-coloured rails/frame. Standard finish used by Mediterranean NATO forces.
  • Sand: Desert sand paint scheme with tan-coloured rails/frame.
  • Snakeskin: Lush spraypaint pattern meant to mimic a snake's skin. Used on ECHs worn by CTRG Group 14 operatives.
  • Tropic: Tropic MTP camouflage pattern with forest green-painted rails/frame. Used by Pacific NATO forces.
  • Woodland: Woodland MTP camouflage pattern with dark green-painted rails/frame. Exclusive to Eastern European NATO forces.

Trivia[]

  • Like its baseline counterpart, the in-game Enhanced Combat Helmet appears to be modelled after Revision Military's "Batlskin Cobra" helmet.[1]
    • The real-world U.S. military does indeed field an "Enhanced Combat Helmet" for both its Army/Marine branches, replacing the older "Advanced Combat Helmet" (ACH), "Modular Integrated Communications Helmet" (MICH) and "Lightweight Helmet" (LWH).
    • However, it should be noted that the real ECH is based on a different helmet designed specifically by Ceradyne Inc. for the ECH programme - not Revision's Batlskin Cobra as depicted in-game.
  • The headset, rail flashlight and strapped infrared strobe accessories are each based on the Peltor "Comtac" series of active ear pro headsets, SureFire's "Helmet Light" and ACR Artex's "MS-2000" (respectively). However, all three accessories are purely cosmetic and serve no functional purpose in-game.
  • Despite being based on the exact same helmet model, the Enhanced Combat Helmet somehow retains a higher base armour value than the basic Combat Helmet. Logically, it makes little sense given that the dimensions of the shell (excluding accessories) are identical for both helmets.
  • The Black, Sand, Snakeskin, Desert and Grass camouflaged ECHs were not added until the release of the campaign's first episode.[2]
  • Prior to the Bootcamp Update and Marksmen DLC, the ECH was originally known as the US Combat Helmet before it was renamed to its present form.[5][6]
    • They were also the standard issue helmet of all NATO infantrymen until the campaign's first episode, whereupon they were only given to squad/team leaders and specialist classes instead.

During the pre-Alpha phase of ArmA 3's development, a subdued American flag patch was visibly attached onto both sides of the helmet.
    • However, in the final version of the game these were replaced with generic patches that lack a national flag.
