NOTE: This article is about the non-canon Extraction scenario in ArmA 3's Western Sahara Creator DLC. For the Apex expansion's Extraction mission in Apex Protocol, see Extraction (mission).

SPIN-OFF: The following information stems from a spin-off expansion or third party Creator DLC and is considered to be non-canon in the main Armaverse timeline.

Extraction is an addon mini-campaign/scenario for ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Western Sahara Creator DLC.

Following a successful uprising by the Tura, they have overthrown the local authorities and have seized control of the mineral-rich Sefrou-Ramal region of Argana. Fearing the loss of valuable mining assets in the region, a shadow client has hired a team of contractors from the ION Services private military company to safeguard their economic interests.

Private military contractors are hired to rescue a kidnapped foreign correspondent from the hands of a ruthless warlord.

Having succeeded with their uprising, the Tura quickly asserts control over the entire region.

Argana, 2036. Sefrou-Ramal is firmly under the Tura's control, and vital economic interests in the region are at risk of falling into the hands of non-state actors. United Assistance peacekeepers, understrength and overburdened by the humanitarian crisis, can do little to stop the fighting.

In the midst of this chaos, two ION security teams, Team Sword and Team Shield, have been hired by a mysterious shadow client to protect regional assets owned by the Daltgreen Mining & Exploration company. However, the true purpose of their contract was to locate the whereabouts of missing news foreign correspondent, Michael Sully.

For almost two months, Sully was believed to have gone missing until intelligence gathered from local sources confirmed their worst fears. He had been kidnapped by the Tura, and was being held by the insurgents for unknown reasons. As Team Shield was occupied with the task of protecting Daltgreen's mines, Team Sword was instead given the sole responsibility of rescuing Sully.

Deploying from their improvised FOB set up in the middle of the Sefrawi Desert, Team Sword began searching for clues that could lead to Sully's rescue. Fortunately, they were provided ample opportunities to do so by sympathetic locals and village elders who were grateful for their presence. Throughout the course of their contract, the mercenaries disarmed minefields, liberated villages from the Tura's oppression, sabotaged insurgent munitions caches, and destroyed anti-aircraft guns that endangered ION's operation.

The UNA had also appealed to the mercenaries for their assistance. Hoping to win over hearts and minds, Team Sword obliged to their requests and delivered much-needed aid supplies. They even helped to defend one of the UNA's checkpoints against a massive Tura attack.

The Tura's senior figures: Said (left) and Dimitrovich (right).

Eventually, Team Sword gathered enough intel to uncover the identity of two key figures in the Tura's leadership: a man named Arib Said, the commander of the Tura tribes, and Gustavo Dimitrovich, an ex-KGB operative who was known as one of the Koltov Five - a group that had gained a reputation for passing state secrets to rogue nations. Eliminating both would inflict serious damage to the Tura and greatly weaken the insurgency's grip on Sefrou-Ramal.

Nonetheless, their first priority was still to find where Sully had been taken. Time was running short; the longer they took to gather sufficient intel, the greater the likelihood that the Tura would execute the journalist.

Team Sword races against the clock as Sully's execution looms.

After some time, Team Sword finally managed to obtain the neccessary intel to narrow down Sully's location to one of the villages. Without delay, Team Sword assaulted the target location and eventually discovered Sully tied up in one of the houses. They freed him from his restraints and began escorting him back to their FOB.

However, Sully pleaded with them and asked the mercenaries to retrieve his digital camera first. Sully had uncovered a massive conspiracy regarding the Tura's financial backers, and needed all the evidence that he could get to prove his story. Sully suggested that Said was most likely the one who was holding onto his camera. If Team Sword got it back to him, they would be guaranteed a generous payout from their shadow client.

Surrounded, Said is gunned down at his compound by Team Sword.

Team Sword proceeded to hunt down both Dimitrovich and Said. Dimitrovich was the first to fall to the mercenaries, but the ex-KGB operative wasn't accompanied by Said.

The mercenaries continued to search for clues until they were at last provided video footage of the compound where Said was hiding. They struck the compound with haste and in one fell swoop, assassinated the insurgent leader before he could escape. They retrieved the camera from his corpse and returned to the FOB for a final time.

Ending A: Sully Rescued/All Evidence Retrieved/Helped UNA
Team Sword's mission was a total success. Sully had been saved, the Tura had been drastically weakened with the deaths of Said and Dimitrovich, and the UNA was able to re-establish some form of control over the region, allowing for humanitarian aid to flow through freely once more.

But the most shocking revelation was Sully's report. Thanks to the irrefutable evidence gathered by Team Sword, Sully was able to expose the existence of a covert programme known only as "goldseam" to the international community. Sponsored by Western governments, the programme helped to finance the Tura's uprising and was the main reason as to why they had been so successful in the first place.

Unfortunately, even with all the hard evidence of Western-backed terrorism, Sully's report did little to bring about change in the country...for Argana was just one of the many shadow wars that were being fought between the East and the West on the African continent.

In addition, Team Sword's blatant disregard for human life throughout the course of their contract had resulted in the deaths of many civilians. Independent investigations by human rights groups eventually led to the discovery of Team Sword's actions, putting ION squarely into the media spotlight.

Not long after, the company itself was placed under scrutiny by the United States Congress. The embarrassing debacle led to the termination of several domestic contracts and a demand for closer monitoring of PMC operations abroad.

Ending B: Sully Rescued/Insufficient Evidence Gathered
Team Sword had managed to rescue Sully and bring him back in one piece, but they were unable to gather sufficient evidence to back Sully's report. Even so, Sully attempted to write a credible report using whatever little evidence that he had.

Rumours of a supposed Western-backed terror financing programme known as "goldseam" was spread across news networks worldwide, with the Tura's uprising being specifically linked to it.

But without hard evidence, the report's findings were ultimately dismissed. Sully himself was accused of envelope journalism, with the report being labelled as nothing more than "propaganda" fabricated by CSAT.

The truth behind the Tura's uprising will never be known to the world.

Even worse, Team Sword's blatant disregard for human life throughout the course of their contract had resulted in the deaths of many civilians. Independent investigations by human rights groups soon led to the discovery of Team Sword's actions, putting ION squarely into the media spotlight.

Not long after, the company itself was placed under scrutiny by the United States Congress. The embarrassing debacle led to the termination of several domestic contracts and a demand for closer monitoring of PMC operations abroad.

Ending C: Sully Killed/All Evidence Retrieved
Team Sword's botched rescue attempt had resulted in the journalist's untimely death. However, the mercenaries were still able to recover his camera from the insurgents. While disappointed with their failure, the shadow client was still satisfied that they had obtained Sully's evidence.

As a result of Team Sword's persistence, they had ensured that Sully had not died in vain. For soon after, reports containing undeniable evidence linking Western countries to a terror financing programme known only as "goldseam" had quickly spread worldwide.

Despite this massive revelation, the overall situation in Argana remained unchanged. For although "goldseam" had been exposed, it was just one of the many shadow wars that were being fought throughout the African continent...

(IF) COLLATERAL DAMAGE CAUSED

Furthermore, Team Sword's blatant disregard for civilian life throughout the course of their contract had not gone unnoticed. Independent investigations by human rights groups eventually led to the discovery of Team Sword's members having committed crimes against humanity.

This exposure put ION squarely into the media spotlight, and not long after, the company itself was placed under scrutiny by the United States Congress. The embarrassing debacle led to the termination of several domestic contracts and a call for closer monitoring of PMC activities abroad.

Ending D: Sully Killed/Insufficient Evidence Gathered/Did Not Help UNA
Team Sword had not only failed to rescue Sully, but had also completely disregarded the journalist's evidence, having left the camera to be buried beneath the dunes of the Sefrawi Desert. To make matters worse, their embarrassing failure led to the shadow client terminating all contracts with ION and instead handing them over their rival, Talon International.

But worst of all was Team Sword's refusal to help the UNA. Unable to halt the Tura's relentless advance, the peacekeepers were overrun. Left unchecked, the Tura then proceeded to butcher over one thousand innocent civilians and aid workers.

And at the end of it all, the truth behind the Tura's uprising will never be known to the world...

(IF) COLLATERAL DAMAGE CAUSED

To make matters worse, Team Sword's blatant disregard for civilian life throughout the course of their contract had led to the deaths of many innocents. Independent investigations carried out by human rights groups eventually led to the discovery of Team Sword's actions, placing ION squarely under the media spotlight.

Not long after, the company itself was scrutinised by the United States Congress. The embarrassing debacle and public outcry resulted in the termination of domestic contracts and a demand for closer monitoring of overseas PMC operations.

Trivia[]

  • Extraction is the first Creator DLC campaign to support both offline singleplayer (with saving) and online multiplayer coop for up to four players.
  • It is the first semi-official campaign to be set within the Armaverse, with its events taking place one year after The East Wind/Apex Protocol and two years before Old Man.
  • Prior to Update 1.02, it was only possible to hire up to five additional contractors to support the player. This limit was increased to nine after the patch was released, making some missions slightly less difficult to accomplish when playing solo (i.e. defending the UNA checkpoint).[1]
  • Depending on whether the player(s) have ownership of the various official DLCs (i.e. the Apex or Contact expansion packs), some Tura insurgents will be randomly equipped with premium weapons from their respective DLC.[2][3]
    • This caveat seemingly does not apply to vehicles however, as it is still possible to "obtain" some official premium vehicles like the partially damaged Qilin LSV at the abandoned Sefrou-Ramal airbase.
  • Following the Update 1.1.1 hotfix, support for up to six human players was added to the campaign in multiplayer. However, it is an experimental addition as Extraction was and is still balanced for teams of only four players.[4]
  • After Update 1.1.3's release, an additional ending that takes into account whether the player(s) had murdered several civilians at any point in the mini-campaign was added.[5]
    • Update 1.1.3 also added support for the Reaction Forces Creator DLC. If it is enabled alongside Western Sahara, some of the DLC's ground vehicles will be made available for use.[5]
