The FIM-43 is a 70 mm surface-to-air missile launcher used by both West German and Danish military forces in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC.
Overview[]
The FIM-43 is an American-made fire-and-forget, infrared-guided surface-to-air missile launcher.
It can launch 70 mm missiles that are fitted with high-explosive (HE) warheads.[CfgAm 1] It can lock onto low-flying aircraft at distances between 30-4,500 metres[CfgAm 2][CfgAm 3] that are flying at speeds of up to ~ 2,098 km/h.[CfgAm 4][Formula 1] It takes four seconds to successfully lock onto a target.[CfgWp 6] The launcher's seeker has a 70% chance of having its lock-on getting disrupted by flare-based countermeasures.[CfgWp 7]
Analogous to the Soviet-made Strela-2M both in terms of performance and function, the FIM-43 launches supersonic missiles that can strike aircraft as distant as 4,500 metres away under optimal conditions.[CfgAm 3] However, its seeker is highly susceptible to flare countermeasures and can lose its lock-on easily.[CfgAm 5] Being limited to a single shot also prevents the user from carrying spare missiles, meaning that at least two members of a squad will need to carry the launcher for maximum effectiveness.
Sight[]

It is not possible to manually adjust zeroing for the FIM-43's sights.
It should be noted that the missile's seeker has a lock-on cone of 70 degrees.[CfgAm 6] Because of how generous this limit is, the target does not have to be positioned directly in the centre of the sight unit's reticle (lock-ons can still be achieved up to the edge of the sight assembly's reticle). Once a lock has been successfully acquired, the seeker's off-boresight limit will allow lock-ons to be maintained up to a maximum of 90 degrees.[CfgAm 7]
Munitions[]

FIM-43 M585
The FIM-43 is only capable of loading one type of missile.[CfgWp 8] This missile has a weight of 135.556[CfgMa 2] "mass" units but the launcher itself is a single-use weapon and cannot be reloaded:[CfgWp 1][note 1]
Parameter | Value |
---|---|
Base damage value | 95[CfgAm 8] |
Splash damage value | 40[CfgAm 9] |
Warhead type | High-Explosive [CfgAm 1] |
Blast radius (metres) | 6[CfgAm 10] |
Launch velocity (m/s) | 170[CfgMa 3] |
Maximum speed (m/s) | 583[CfgAm 11] |
Penetration depth (mm) | 0 [CfgAm 12][note 2] |
Utilises infrared-homing guidance.[CfgAm 13][CfgAm 14][note 3] Can lock onto targets up to 4,500 metres away.[CfgAm 3]
M585 missiles are always hard-launched with an initial velocity of 170 m/s.[CfgMa 3] 0.1 seconds after being launched[CfgAm 15], the missile will only need 6 seconds of flight time[CfgAm 16] to attain a maximum speed of up to 583 m/s.[CfgAm 11] The missile only has enough fuel for a flight time of 10 seconds and will automatically explode if it does not hit its target within this timeframe.[CfgAm 17]
The M585 uses a high-explosive (HE) warhead[CfgAm 1] and has a blast radius of 6 metres.[CfgAm 10] It does not have a proximity-based fuse. The seeker itself has a 70% chance of losing lock to flare-based defensive countermeasures.[CfgAm 5]
Sensors[]
The missile's seeker uses just one type of sensor for guidance:
Sensor type | Max range (Air/Ground) | Min range (Air/Ground) | Affected by environment? | Target max speed (km/h) | Azimuth coverage (°) | Elevation coverage (°) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Infrared | A: 4,500 m G: 2,000 m [CfgAm 18][CfgAm 19] |
A: 200 m G: 500 m [CfgAm 20][CfgAm 21] |
Fog (0.005%) [CfgAm 22] Altitude (<1 m) [CfgAm 23][note 4] |
1,800 km/h [CfgAm 24][Formula 2] |
20°[CfgAm 25] | 20°[CfgAm 26] |
Infrared Sensor[]
The missile can lock onto targets between 30[CfgAm 2]-4,500[CfgAm 3] metres away, and is only able to track aircraft that are flying at speeds of up to 1,800 km/h.[CfgAm 24][Formula 2][note 5] The sensor's lock-on cone is restricted to a horizontal and vertical angle of 20 degrees.[CfgAm 25][CfgAm 26]
Although it is technically affected by heavy fog, the range reduction effect is so miniscule (22.5 metre reduction[CfgAm 22]) that it will be barely noticeable.[note 6] On the other hand, it isn't able to maintain lock onto aircraft that have landed onto the ground.[CfgAm 23]
Trivia[]
- The FIM-43 was not available upon Global Mobilization's initial release and was only included after Update 1.2.[1]
- As of Update 1.3, the "Redeye" suffix was omitted from its display title and is now simply known by its U.S. military designation (FIM-43).[2]

Notes[]
- ↑ Carrying spare M585 missiles for the FIM-43 will do nothing as the launcher cannot be reloaded after firing once. This is because the weapon's scripts will automatically swap the "real" FIM-43 launcher with a "fake" version that is completely unusable (representing the disposable nature of the launcher).
- ↑ The missile's warhead is purely explosive and cannot pierce armour.
- ↑ If available, M585 missiles can be detected by the target's Infrared Warning Receiver (IWR) during lock-on and by its Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) once the missile is in the air and is flying towards it.
- ↑ The FIM-43's M585 missile will not be able to detect aircraft that have landed onto the ground.
- ↑ This lower maximum speed value (1,800 km/h) only applies to the missile's infrared sensor. The missile itself (when it is still loaded in the launcher) can lock onto targets that are flying at speeds of up to ~ 2,098 km/h.
- ↑ The missile's infrared sensor IS affected by the player's View and Object Distance settings and may not function at its maximum range unless their graphics settings are set to an equal or higher distance.
