The AAVP-7A1 (full name: Assault Amphibious Vehicle) is a tracked Armoured Personnel Carrier used exclusively by the U.S. Marines in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Troop transport
    • Fire support
« The Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV) is a fully tracked amphibious landing vehicle used by the US Marine Corps.
The AAVP-7A1 is the most common AAV version. It carries M2HB .50 caliber heavy machine gun, and an Mk19 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

Design[]

The AAV is a fully tracked amphibious landing vehicle that is primarily launched from Amphibious Assault Ships.

Its intended role is to spearhead a beach and to secure the coastline for dismounted troops. Once ashore, the AAV's other roles include guarding checkpoints, patrolling, and carrying troops and supplies inland.

Armament
It is armed with a single turret that has a dual-mount .50 cal heavy machine gun/40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

The standard loadout of the dual-mount turret gives it a total of 400 rounds of .50 cal ammunition divided up into individual 100-round belts (with one already loaded by default).

192 rounds of 40 mm high-explosive dual purpose (HEDP) grenades are available through four single 48-round grenade belts.

Features
Designed to ferry troops to and from the sea, the AAV is an amphibious-capable armoured personnel carrier that was primarily utilised by the Marines of the 27th MEU at the height of Operation Harvest Red.

The AAV is unique for being the largest (at least in terms of passenger capacity) APC that can be used in-game. With a capacity of up to nineteen, the AAV can easily transport almost an entire two squads worth of Marines into battle at any location. Compared to most other tracked vehicles, it is also quite fast on land and in the water, along with having decent acceleration and handling on both stable and uneven terrain.

Though it isn't armed with particularly heavy weaponry, the AAV can easily suppress unarmoured/lightly armoured enemy forces during assaults thanks to its MK19 grenade launcher. It can launch a barrage of 40 mm grenades to eliminate entire groups of enemy infantry/light vehicles, and utilise its .50 cal HMG to attack low-flying helicopters.

Drawbacks
However, when it comes to providing protection for its passengers, the AAV is also essentially the worst APC in that regard. This mainly stems from its lack of weaponry - unlike its tracked Russian counterpart, the AAV's turret is armed with only a HMG/AGL combo that is completely useless against armoured vehicles.

Coupled with having less than stellar armour plating compared to the BMP-3, this makes it incredibly vulnerable to heavy vehicles such as Main Battle Tanks.

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) as well as other anti-tank weaponry also pose as significant threats; if left exposed to any of these threats, the AAV is almost certain to end up as burning wreckage along with losing (potentially) up to nineteen troops in a single stroke.

As such, the AAV is best used in conjunction with other friendly forces in a combined arms formation as opposed to working alone. An example of this would be relying on MBTs like the M1A1/M1A2 to draw fire while the AAV's dismounts handle enemy infantry and other hidden small targets.

Crew Capacity
The AAV has a crew capacity of three that consists of the driver, a gunner, and the commander. It can transport up to nineteen passengers who sit face-to-face in the rear troop compartment.

Protection[]

The AAV has a base armour value of 210.

Successful strikes to any of the following highlighted sections will inflict full damage to the component:

LEGEND
Green = Hull
Orange = Engine
Maroon = Turret

Hull[]

The AAV's hull can withstand up to 210 points of damage.

Engine[]

The AAV's engine is able to incur 73.5 points of damage. At least 20% of damage is always transferred onto the AAV's main "health" pool.

A damaged engine will severely diminish power output and prevent the AAV from attaining its top speed. While traversing over water, it is possible for the vehicle to become trapped and unable to move depending on tidal strength.

Treads[]

The AAV's treads are able to survive only 31.5 points of damage before breaking.

Disabling either will impede (but not prevent) the AAV from moving. Destroying both will render the vehicle immobilised on rough terrain and make it almost impossible to turn - even if the engine is intact.

Turret[]

The commander/gunner's turret can take 210 points of damage.

Disabling the turret will prevent it from being rotated but does not stop its weapons from being fired.

Armament[]

All weapon systems are controlled exclusively by the AAV's gunner. For optics, the gunner can toggle a day, night or green-hot/black-hot thermal vision modes:

M2HB[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-aavp7a1-m2hb
Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
26 -0.00068 930

Heavy machine gun. Intended for anti-infantry use, or against unarmoured vehicles and low-flying helicopters.

Has a fire rate of ~ 545 rounds per minute and a muzzle velocity of 930 m/s. It takes 6 seconds to reload a fresh belt box. The M2HB has an effective firing range of between 800 and up to 1,200 metres, with a dispersion of 0.001 rad at all distances.

MK19[]

Damage type Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
High-Explosive 12 -0.001064 240

Automatic grenade launcher. Useful against groups of infantry and unarmoured/lightly-armoured vehicles.

Can attain a fire rate of 150 RPM and has a muzzle velocity of 240 m/s. 6 seconds are required to reload grenade belts. The MK19 has a firing range of between 450 up to a maximum of 1,500 metres. Accuracy-wise, it has a dispersion of 0.006 rad for targets at all distances.

Trivia[]

  • The AAV has a cinematic-only version that is hidden in the game and cannot be spawned or placed in the editor without the use of scripting commands.
    • This AAV (Classname: AAV_cutscene) can only be seen officially in the One Week Later intermission sequence in the campaign. It does not have the ability to transport passengers in its troop compartment, has a maximum limit of four passengers, and forces them sit on the top of the rear section of the hull instead.
    • It also has four Mountain Bikes secured (via model proxy and not through the attachTo scripting command) to it that can be shown or hidden via scripting commands.
  • Following the latest Steam version patches (as part of the Community Configuration Project update), both the AAV's gunner and commander can now toggle thermal vision modes.
