The M119 is used exclusively by U.S. Army forces in ArmA: Armed Assault.
Overview[]
The M119 is designed to provide direct and indirect fire support to troops in the field.
The standard loadout of the M119 gives it 30 rounds of high-explosive (HE) shells. The shells are fired with an initial velocity of 1,100 m/s, and can devastate infantry and unarmoured/light vehicles caught within a blast radius of 20 metres.
It takes 6 seconds to reload a new shell (averaging 10 rounds per minute). If the M119 has been fully depleted, it takes 8 seconds to rearm its stockpile completely. Range-wise, the M119 has an effective firing range of 12,000 metres, but can hit locations as far as 19,000 metres away (albeit with very high dispersion).
A dual-purpose static gun, the M119 can be employed both as an artillery piece and for destroying ground vehicles in direct fire mode.
By simply depressing the turret's elevation low enough, the M119 can be transformed into a powerful anti-tank gun which can destroy Main Battle Tanks like the T-72 after two to three hits. Against anything else, the M119 is guaranteed to completely shred its targets with ease.
Naturally however, both the M119 itself and the crew manning it are quite vulnerable if left unprotected. Since the gun takes time to depress/elevate its base, it is relatively easy for enemy troops or vehicles to outflank the howitzer's crew. A generous burst of small arms fire is sufficient to kill both the crew and destroy the M119, so care needs be taken if no support is available for the gunners.
Munitions[]
The M119 can only be loaded with one type of shell:
Damage type | Base damage value | Launch velocity (m/s) |
---|---|---|
High-Explosive | 210 | 1,100 |
The M119's 105 mm HE shells have a blast radius of 20 metres. They are always fired with an initial velocity of 1,100 m/s and can potentially reach a maximum velocity of up to 1,300 m/s.
Trivia[]
- The additional "crew" positions - which in reality would represent the four (up to six) other members of the battery's crew who assist in the reloading process, are merely present for aesthetic reasons. Regardless of whether they are occupied or not, the M119 will always reload at the exact same pace even if the gunner is alone.
- Due to the lack of engine-level support for towing objects, the M119 cannot be dragged by vehicles in-game and remains exclusively as a static emplacement.
- Along with the D-30, the M119A1 was among one of the first two static gun artillery "turrets" in the series.

The M119A1 is used by both the U.S. Marines and U.S. Army forces in ArmA 2.
Overview[]
Returning from Armed Assault, the ArmA 2 M119A1 remains mostly identical in capability and little has changed overall (function-wise).
As before, the M119A1 is still designed to fire 105 mm high-explosive (HE) artillery shells, of which it carries 30 shells worth of rounds. They have a blast radius of 20 metres and are launched with a velocity of 1,100 m/s.
However, the M119A1 now supports firing multiple types of shells with different payloads (in addition to regular HE). This includes:
- White Phosphorous (WP) shells, highly devastating against clumped-up infantry
- Sense and Destroy ARMor (SADARM) anti-tank shells, which automatically home in onto nearby enemy vehicles at the impact point
- Laser-Guided (LG) shells, which will lock onto any laser spots projected by handheld designators or markers once they arrive close to the strike zone
- Illumination flare shells, harmless rounds which project artificial light over the targeted area for a short amount of time
- Smoke shells, which instantly create a thick cloud of white smoke for concealment at the target location on impact
Another adjustment to the M119A1 is that it is quicker to rearm, and only requires a meagre 2 seconds to fully restock with shells once depleted. In all other aspects, the M119A1 has not changed in the slightest and can still be employed for either direct fire or indirect fire roles.
Munitions[]
NOTE: Although listed here, it is not possible to load any of the following munitions aside from HE into the M119A1 during normal gameplay. The following statistics only apply if fired through scripted methods via the Artillery Module.
Shell type | Damage type | Base damage value | Launch velocity (m/s) |
---|---|---|---|
HE* | High-Explosive | 210 | 370 |
WP (Primary) | High-Explosive | 60 | 370 |
WP (Secondary) | High-Explosive | 5 | N/A |
SADARM (Primary) | Kinetic | 20 | 370 |
SADARM (Secondary) | Kinetic | 330 | N/A |
LG | High-Explosive | 340 | 370 |
Illumination | Kinetic | 8 | 370 |
Smoke | High-Explosive | 8 | 370 |
The M119A1 can be loaded with six types of shells, though only one kind (HE) is available by default:
- HE: 20 metre blast radius. Effective against infantry and most ground vehicles.
- WP: Has an initial 20 metre blast radius but retains an area-of-effect dispersion radius of 30 metres. Non-vehicle targets entering the smoke cloud will take damage if caught within the blast zone.
- SADARM: 20 metre blast radius (initial). Upon reaching a height of 500 metres above the impact zone, the shell's submunition will deploy itself and target the closest vehicle. The submunition has a blast radius of 7 metres and strikes with a velocity of 800 m/s.
- LG: 30 metre blast radius. Once the shell reaches a distance of 1,000 metres above the target area, it will begin seeking a laser spot to home into. If there are no laser spots detected, the shell will simply strike a random location within the impact zone.
- Illumination: Illuminates the target zone. The flare will burn for 30 seconds.
- Smoke: Blankets the impact zone with a cloud of thick white-coloured smoke. It takes 4 seconds to fully form and will last for a total of 60 seconds.
(*) It should be noted that HE shells fired via the Artillery module are specifically more powerful compared to "regular" shells. They are launched with a greater velocity of 850 m/s, retain a higher base damage value of 250 and a blast radius of 25 metres.
Trivia[]
- Initially, the base version of ArmA 2 did not include different munition types and was restricted to firing HE shells only. The Operation Arrowhead expansion pack subsequently added the additional shell types following its release.
- However, these shells are not available as part of the M119's stockpile by default. They can only be added via a custom config file or through scripting commands in the editor.
- This is because many of the shells (i.e. SADARM) are not intended to be used by the player nor the AI. Rather, they are meant to be "controlled" via the engine's built-in Artillery module, which automatically handles how each shell is meant to function when requested.
- Likewise, not all of shells are represented properly in-game like their real-life counterparts. WP shells for instance, merely create the visual effect of a modified explosion effect but do not actually leave behind a burning smoke cloud which would maim or kill infantry.
- However, these shells are not available as part of the M119's stockpile by default. They can only be added via a custom config file or through scripting commands in the editor.
- Just like in Armed Assault, the M119 cannot be towed as ArmA 2's iteration of the Real Virtuality engine continues to lack support for object towing.
