The Mi-24 is a helicopter gunship featured in both ArmA: Cold War Assault and ArmA 2.

ArmA: Cold War Assault[]

The Mi-24 is used exclusively by Soviet military forces in ArmA: Cold War Assault.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Heavy gunship
    • Troop transport
« Entering service in the late 1960’s, Mi24 Hind gunship provided main force for air support in the Afghanistan War. As the Eastern equivalent to US Air Force Apache helicopter, Hind is designed to perform all operations from air-to-air combat to air-to-ground and anti-tank capability. Helicopter is fitted with Overpressure system to transport up to eight troops through NBC (Nuclear Biological Chemical) conditions. Alternatively cargo area can be used as extra ammo storage.
Vehicle Description
»

Design[]

The Mi-24 is a twin-engined attack helicopter designed to provide close air support against armoured targets and for transportation of personnel. It uses a conventional pod and boom layout with a five-blade main rotor and three-blade tail rotor.

Armament
By default, the Mi-24 is armed with a single 30 mm autocannon and has air-to-ground anti-tank guided missiles attached to each of its stub wings, which also contain twin 57 mm rocket pods as well.

The 30 mm autocannon feeds from a single 500-round linked belt of high-explosive (HE) shells, while the stub wings carry 8 anti-tank guided missiles and a total of 64 rockets fitted with HE warheads for the rocket pods.

OFP-mi24-08

Enemy tanks are prime targets for the Mi-24's ATGMs.

Features
True to its name, the Mi-24 is a "flying tank" and can withstand far more punishment than both of its American-made counterparts.

The Mi-24 packs a similar loadout with a mixture of anti-tank missiles and unguided rockets, making it a devastating foe for both ground vehicles and infantry alike.

Notable Traits
The Mi-24 possesses one unique feature in that it can serve as both a heavily-armed attack helicopter and flying troop transport. Once armoured ground threats are eliminated by the gunner, the pilot can simply land the helicopter and unload an entire squad's worth of Soviet troops into battle.

OFP-mi24-09

Loading a Soviet rifle squad into the passenger cabin.

It is the only helicopter in Cold War Assault which is capable of this; essentially turning the Mi-24 into a flying version of the BMP-1/BMP-2 Infantry Fighting Vehicles.

Drawbacks
Unfortunately, the Mi-24 has ungainly handling due to its large size and isn't nearly as agile as the newer Ka-50. It has much more difficulty maintaining speed on hard turns compared to the American AH-64, and will struggle to gain speed even when flying in a straight profile.

Crew Capacity
The Mi-24 has a default crew capacity of two for the pilot and gunner who sit in the front cockpit. The rear passenger cabin is able to transport up to eight passengers.

Protection[]

The Mi-24 has 100 points worth of armour plating.

Armament[]

The gunner position controls both the turret-mounted Cannon 30 mm and AT-6 missiles/57 mm Rocket pods carried on stub wings on both sides of the airframe:

Cannon 30 mm[]

OFP-vehicleweapons-mi24-cannon30mm
Shell type Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
HE 20 1,000
AP 90 1,000

30 mm autocannon. Can load either HE or AP-type shells:

  • High-Explosive (HE): Blast radius of 3 metres.
  • Armour Piercing (AP): Splash radius of 1 metre.

It can attain a fire rate of ~ 333 rounds per minute and has a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s. It has an effective firing range of up to 1,500 metres.

AT-6[]

OFP-vehicleweapons-mi24-at6
Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive Anti-Tank 750

Air-to-ground anti-tank missiles. Utilises infrared-guidance and has a maximum lock-on range of 2,000 metres.

AT-6 missiles are launched with an initial velocity of 30 m/s and take a further 5.5 seconds to reach a top in-flight speed of 200 m/s. The warhead itself has a blast radius of 2.5 metres.

57 mm Rocket[]

OFP-vehicleweapons-mi24-57mmrocket
Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive 400

Unguided air-to-ground rockets. Strong against groups of infantry and unarmoured/lightly-armoured ground vehicles.

Rockets are always launched with an initial velocity of 44 m/s and take a further 3.5 seconds to reach a top speed of 1,000 m/s in-flight. The warheads are high-explosive (HE) based and have a blast radius of 3 metres.

Trivia[]

  • Contrary to its depiction in Cold War Assault, all early Soviet-era models of the Mi-24 were not equipped with 30 mm-chambered cannons. Depending on the variant, Mi-24s have always been armed with either the "Yak-B" 12.7 mm or "GSh-23L" 23 mm cannons.
    • Only modernised Mi-24s (the "P" variant specifically) used by the Russian Armed Forces were fitted with the newer 30 mm-chambered "GSh-30-2" autocannon.

ArmA 2[]

The Mi-24P and its sub-variants are used by the CDF, Czech military forces, the Russian Armed Forces, as well as with the Takistani Army in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Heavy gunship
    • Troop transport
« The Mil Mi-24 (NATO reporting name: Hind) is a Russian-made large helicopter gunship also capable of a low-capacity troop transportation.
The Mil Mi-24P (NATO reporting name: Hind-D) is a more advanced version of the original Mi-24 designed primarily as a weapons platform.
Armoury Description
»

Design[]

In ArmA 2, the Mi-24's functions and purpose remain mostly the same as its Cold War-era counterpart; namely that it's designed to fulfil the duties of being both a troop transport and ground attack helicopter.

Armament
Its default loadout consists of a 30 mm autocannon, twin 80 mm rocket pods, air-to-ground anti-tank missiles, and twin unguided iron bombs.

The Mi-24P's autocannon can fire up to 750 rounds of HE shells, and also carries 4 SACLOS-guided ATGMs, and up to 40 high-explosive (HE) rockets.

Other variants of the Mi-24 (D/V) other than the P model are equipped with different loadouts depending on the faction that uses it.

Features
It is available in two more variants, one older export model (Mi-24D) that is mainly used the CDF and Takistani Army, while another (Mi-24V) is used by both Russian forces and the Czech military.

Performing the same role as its Cold War-era predecessor, it shares the same attributes of being well-armoured, capable of transporting troops in and out of battle, and packs heavy firepower at the same time.

It is the second most used helicopter besides the Mi-8 transport helicopter.

Being the only attack helicopter with both transport capability and high offensive firepower, it has no direct parallel to it; with perhaps only the USMC's UH-1Y coming close and even then not as a direct counterpart to it.

Notable Traits
Aside from its ATGMs and rockets, the Mi-24P is unique for being the only attack helicopter in ArmA 2 that can carry unguided bombs as part of its default loadout.

On top of already being a deadly anti-vehicle threat, this makes the Mi-24P equally as dangerous to infantry garrisoned inside buildings. Anything that isn't finished off by cannon/rocket fire can be shredded by the twin iron bombs instead.

Drawbacks
As expected for a helicopter of its size, the handling for the Mi-24P and its sub-variants is no different from its older predecessor.

It is undoubtedly the poorest performing out of all the attack helicopters in ArmA 2 and isn't nearly as fast or agile as the newer Ka-52. Its handling also isn't on par with the USMC's AH-1Z and AH-64D gunships, both of which can easily outpace it.

Crew Capacity
All variants of the Mi-24 have enough seats for a crew of two which consists of the pilot and the gunner who sit in the front cockpit. The passenger cabin has enough seats to allow for up to eight occupants at a time.

Variants[]

Arma2-render-mi24d cdf
Older export model of the Mi-24 primarily used by both the CDF and Takistani Army.

The Mi-24D's sole difference to the Russian Mi-24P is its loadout; instead of the 30 mm cannon it uses a 12.7 mm gun that feeds from a linked 1,470-round belt. The Mi-24D is also armed with 4 Falanga 3M11, TV-guided missiles that lack homing guidance.

Lastly, it uses smaller twin 57 mm rocket pods which contain a combined total of 128 HE rockets.

Arma2-render-mi35 cz

The Mi-24V is available in two models, one used by the Russian military and another by Czech forces:

  • The Russian Mi-24V carries 4 SACLOS/infrared-guided, air-to-ground Shturm 9K114 ATGMs which are attached onto its stub wings. Its twin 80 mm rocket pods on the other hand, each carry 40 rockets (for a total of 80) that are fitted with high-explosive (HE) warheads.
  • The Czech Mi-24V is identical in all aspects save for a slightly adjusted loadout, which provides only 20 rounds for each of the 80 mm rocket pods (combined for a total of 40).
    • It also carries 8 Ataka-V 9M120 air-to-ground missiles with high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads on its stub wings in lieu of the regular Shturm ATGMs. The 9M120 missiles can utilise either SACLOS or infrared tracking for guidance.

Camouflage[]

  • Woodland: Olive green paint scheme with dark brown camouflage blobs. Primarily used by CDF Mi-24Ds.
  • Crocodile: Two-tone olive green paint camouflage scheme. Exclusively used on Russian Mi-24Vs and Mi-24Ps.
  • Desert: Two-tone desert tan/olive green camouflage scheme. Used on Mi-24Ds operated by the Takistani Army.
  • Grey: Two-tone grey paint scheme with pale olive green camouflage blobs. Only used on Czech Mi-24Vs.

Protection[]

All variants of the Mi-24 have base armour values of 33.

Hull[]

The hull can survive 33 points of damage.

Engines[]

The engines can incur up to 29.7 points of damage before failing. Destroying them will cause the Mi-24 to immediately lose power.

Instruments[]

Flight instruments and avionic systems will fail after taking 4.95 points of damage.

Main rotor[]

The main rotor will be disabled if it takes more than 9.9 points of damage.

Only 30% of damage onto the main rotors are transferred onto the Mi-24's main "health" pool. If destroyed, it will become almost impossible to maintain lift.

Tail rotor[]

The tail rotor will be disabled if it takes more than 6.6 points of damage.

Only 10% of damage onto the tail rotor is transferred onto the Mi-24's main "health" pool. Torque cannot be controlled if it is destroyed.

Armament[]

The gunner position handles all guided weapon systems on the Mi-24 while the pilot controls the unguided rocket pods (regardless of variant) and forward-facing GSh-30-2 autocannon (exclusive to the Mi-24P). For optics, the turret camera has access to two fields of view:

MAWS[]

All variants of the Mi-24 possess Missile Approach Warning Systems, and will alert their pilots of incoming missiles already in mid-flight.

RWR[]

All Mi-24 models have Radar Warning Receivers, and can warn their pilots of being locked onto by radar-based targeting systems.

IWR[]

No variants of the Mi-24 possess Infrared Warning Receivers and do not alert their pilots of being locked onto by infrared-based targeting systems.

Trivia[]

  • The Mi-24 was one of the few helicopters from the original ArmA 2 that was "upgraded" with the ability to use countermeasure flares following the release of the Operation Arrowhead expansion pack.
  • Following the release of the Community Configuration Project updates, all Mi-24 models (irrespective of faction) were updated with both gameplay and bug-oriented fixes, ranging from:
    • Launched rockets were being fired from the wrong pylon positions.
    • Rocket pods being transferred over to pilot control; previously all weapon systems were controlled by the gunner.
    • FAB-250s on Mi-24Ps did not disappear even after they dropped.
    • Defensive countermeasures now include chaff in addition to flares; Mi-24s previously only deployed flares.
    • The gunner's camera lacked proper zoom magnification for their optics.
  • Loadouts for Mi-24Ds and Mi-24Vs were also slightly adjusted as part of the latest patches. Previously, Mi-24Ds employed by the CDF utilised Shturm 9K114s instead of the older Falanga 3M11 while Takistani Mi-24Ds lacked countermeasures. There was also no functional difference between Russian and Czech-operated Mi-24Vs (both had identical pylon loadouts).
