ArmA: Armed Assault[]

The Offroad and its sub-variants are used by Sahranian civilians, Resistance guerillas, and Black Element PMCs in ArmA: Armed Assault.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Civilian transportation
    • Armed scout
« COYOTA is a powereful off-road vehicle with four wheel drive and open load area that sports heavy machine gun DShKM. The gun fires 12.7mm Soviet cartridges and is commonly mounted as an anti-aircraft gun on Russian tanks. The armor piercing rounds of this weapon can penetrate 15 mm armor at 500 meters.

Design[]

The Offroad is a two-door, four-wheel drive pickup truck. As a lightweight and sturdy off-road vehicle, the Offroad is a common sight on the roads of the Kingdom of Sahrani, and its armed sub-variants are rugged transports that work well for hit-and-run missions.

Features
It is available in three variants: a baseline (unarmed) civilian model, and two armed variants which have either a 7.62 mm medium machine gun or 12.7 mm heavy machine gun fitted onto the rear flatbed. Armed variants used by guerilla fighters have better engines that can attain a slightly higher top speed and acceleration rate.

Mobility
Both civilian and guerilla Offroads handle well on rough terrain and can accelerate at a decent pace on paved roads, being slightly faster than the Pickup while also having marginally better handling (though the difference is negligible). In all other aspects, both the civilian and guerilla-operated Offroads are completely identical to the Pickup.

Crew Capacity
All Offroads (except for the Hilux PK-1) only support a single passenger in the front cab. HMG-armed Hilux trucks can carry a gunner who handles the mounted weapons in the rear flatbed. The PK-1 variant is the only Offroad that can transport up to three other passengers (including the cab passenger).

Variants[]

Arma1-render-offroadred
Baseline civilian variant, available in three different configurations with or without miscellaneous vehicle attachments and accessories. It can only transport a single passenger, who sits alongside the driver in the cab.

This is a premium asset that requires ownership of the Queen's Gambit expansion pack.

Arma1-render-offroadpk1insurgent1
Armed variant with a slightly more powerful engine. The roof of the cab is fitted with a forward-facing PKT 7.62 mm MMG. The PKT is pre-loaded with a single 100-round belt box and has a further 5 boxes spare (for a combined total of 600 rounds).

It can transport up to two additional passengers who sit in the rear flatbed of the vehicle.

Premium content logo
This is a premium asset that requires ownership of the Queen's Gambit expansion pack.

Arma1-render-offroaddshkminsurgent1
Alternate armed variant that shares the same "upgraded" engine but uses a DShKM 12.7 mm heavy machine gun instead.

Unlike the PK-1 variant, the turret-mounted HMG can be fully rotated in all directions (horizontally). The DShKM is pre-loaded with one 50-round belt box and has access to a further 5 boxes (for a combined total of 300 rounds). This variant can only transport the cab passenger and does not feature the same number of seats as the Hilux PK-1 variant.

Camouflage[]

  • Tan: Pale tan-coloured paint scheme. A black stripe runs across the vehicle's body.
  • Red: Scratched and worn-out pale red paint scheme.
  • White: Flat white paint scheme. A light brown stripe runs across the mid-section of the entire vehicle's body.
  • Insurgent (1-2): Spraypainted camouflage schemes with a variety of stroke patterns and camouflage blobs. Only used on Resistance and Black Element Hilux trucks.

Protection[]

All variants of the Offroad have base armour values of 20.

Body[]

The Offroad's body can resist up to 20 points of damage.

Engine[]

The Offroad's engine can only survive 8 points of damage before failing.

Fuel tank[]

The Offroad's fuel tank can withstand 6 points of damage before rupturing.

Wheels[]

The Offroad's tyres will burst if they take more than 3 points of damage.

Armament[]

The gunner on the (armed) Hilux variants handle the mounted heavy weapons - either the PKT 7.62 mm medium machine gun or DShKM 12.7 mm heavy machine gun:

PKT[]

Arma1-vehicleweapons-offroad-pkt

NOTE: Only available on the Hilux PK-1 variant.

Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
12 900

7.62 mm medium machine gun. Forward-facing only (with a horizontal rotation limit of 45 degrees in both directions) and is mounted above the cab's roof.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 800 rounds per minute and has a muzzle velocity of 900 m/s. Accuracy-wise, it always has a fixed dispersion of 0.003 rad regardless of distance. It takes 7 seconds to reload a fresh linked belt (assuming the Hilux has run out and is rearming at a logistics vehicle).

DShKM[]

Arma1-vehicleweapons-offroad-dshkm

NOTE: Only available on the Hilux DShKM variant.

Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
28 850

General-purpose 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 600 RPM, has a muzzle velocity of 850 m/s, and takes a total of 10 seconds to reload a fresh belt box or to fully rearm from a truck. Accuracy-wise, it has a fixed dispersion of 0.002 rad regardless of range.

Trivia[]

  • The Armed Assault Offroad is based on the real-world Japanese-made "Hilux" series of pickup trucks designed by the Toyota Motor Corporation.
  • Before Patch 1.06's release, the Offroad's exhaust fumes would be emitted from the centre of the vehicle rather than from the rear. A configuration bug with its model would also cause the steering wheel to rotate in the opposite direction (i.e. turning left would cause the steering wheel to turn right).[1]
  • The attached spare tyre is purely cosmetic and cannot be used to replace any damaged or burst tyres in-game.
  • For licencing reasons, the rear section's bed door is labelled with "COYOTA" instead of the TOYOTA wordage seen on real Hilux trucks. However, the armed Offroad variants added with Queen's Gambit strangely refer to them directly as the "Hilux".

Design[]

The Offroad returns in ArmA 2 as a civilian vehicle and as an improvised troop transport for guerilla factions.

Features
It is available in two armed variants which have either a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or 73 mm recoilless rifle mounted onto a turret in the rear bed of the vehicle. The baseline unarmed model, used only by civilians, is also available in up to three variants. All are identical to one another when it comes to performance however, and only have different paint schemes applied.

Like in Armed Assault, ArmA 2's Offroad shares similar characteristics to the Pickup when it comes to performance and passenger capacity. The main difference between the two vehicles is that the Offroad supports heavier weaponry in the form of 12.7 mm HMGs and 73 mm recoilless rifles, which makes it the better fire support vehicle out of the two.

Mobility
ArmA 2's Offroad is slightly faster than the Pickup and handles better when driving off-road as well.

Just like in Armed Assault, there is also a slight difference in performance between civilian Offroads and those operated by guerilla factions. It is far less pronounced compared to Armed Assault's Offroads, however, with the only major difference being their attainable top speeds (108 km/h for civilian Offroads and 114 km/h for guerilla Offroads).

Crew Capacity
All variants are only capable of carrying both the driver and a single passenger who sit in the cab alongside them. Armed variants will also support a single gunner who mans the turret in the rear bed of the vehicle.

Variants[]

Arma2-render-offroadguerrilla1
Baseline armed variant.

The rear bed has a DShKM 12.7 mm HMG attached onto the turret which feeds from a single 50-round belt box and has a further 5 more boxes in reserve (for a total of 300 rounds). It can only transport a single passenger who sits in the cab next to the driver.

Arma2-render-offroadrebel2
Alternate armed model that uses an SPG-9 73 mm recoilless rifle.

The SPG-9 has access to a total of 16 rounds worth of munitions: 8 of which are PG-9N grenades fitted high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warheads while the other 8 are OG-9V high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) instead. It transports the same number of passengers as the DShKM variant.

Arma2-render-offroadtan
Unarmed civilian model.

Identical in capability to the baseline armed variant but lacks a gunner since it doesn't carry any armament. It also transports the same number of passengers.

Arma2-render-offroadred
Alternate civilian variant. It is completely identical to the Tan variant but only uses a pale red paint scheme.

Arma2-render-offroadwhite
Alternate civilian variant. It is also identical to the Red variant but uses a flat white paint scheme with a light brown stripe instead.

Camouflage[]

  • Guerrilla (1-2): Woodland camouflage scheme. Only applied onto armed NAPA Offroads.
  • Insurgent: Olive green paint scheme with spraypainted stroke patterns. Used by ChDKZ-operated armed Offroads.
  • Rebel (1-2): Multiple tone paint scheme with a variety of spraypainted stroke patterns and shapes. Exclusive to Offroads used by Takistani anti-government rebels.
  • Tan: Pale tan-coloured paint scheme. A black stripe runs across the vehicle's body.
  • Red: Scratched and worn-out pale red paint scheme.
  • White: Flat white paint scheme. A light brown stripe runs across the mid-section of the entire vehicle's body.

Protection[]

All variants of the Offroad share the same base armour value of 20.

Successful strikes to any of the following highlighted sections will inflict full damage to the component:

Arma2-offroad-hitpoints

LEGEND
Green = Body
Orange = Engine
Violet = Fuel tank

Hit zones remain identical regardless of the flatbed's contents.

Body[]

The Offroad's body can only take a maximum of 20 points of damage.

Engine[]

The Offroad's engine can only withstand up to 8 points of damage before it fails. At least 20% of incoming damage will be shared with the Offroad's main "health" pool.

Fuel tank[]

The Offroad's fuel tank can only take up to 6 points of damage before it ruptures. Damaging the fuel tank will cause the Offroad to gradually leak fuel.

Wheels[]

Each of the Offroad's wheels can only take 6 points of damage before their tyres burst.

Armament[]

All weapon systems are controlled by the gunner on the flatbed of the armed variants, either a DShKM 12.7 mm heavy machine gun or the SPG-9 73 mm recoilless gun.

For optics, only the SPG-9 provides its gunner with a day sight that has variable zoom capability (1.25x/4.31x). It is unable to toggle enhanced vision modes, though the gunner does have the ability to wear their own night vision goggles whilst looking through the sight:

DShKM[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-offroad-dshkm

NOTE: Only available on the Offroad (DShKM) variant.

Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
28 -0.0006 850

General-purpose 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 600 RPM and has a muzzle velocity of 850 m/s. It takes at least 6 seconds to reload a new belt box or to fully rearm from a logistics truck. Accuracy-wise, it has a fixed dispersion of 0.0015 rad regardless of range.

The turret has no horizontal rotation limit and can be freely swivelled in any direction. However, it is restricted to a vertical rotation limit of 60 degrees for elevation and just 18 degrees for depression.

Manual zeroing is available to the DShKM. Zeroing limits begin from a minimum of 100 m up to a maximum of 2000 m. Adjustments are made with increments/decrements of 100 m.

SPG-9[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-offroad-spg9

NOTE: Only available on the Offroad (SPG-9) variant.

Main article: SPG-9#ArmA 2

73 mm recoilless anti-tank gun. Can load either HE or AP-type grenades.

Unlike the DShKM, manual zeroing is not available on the SPG-9. It takes at least 10 seconds to reload the gun with a fresh grenade round. The SPG-9's turret mount can be freely rotated in any direction horizontally. However, it is restricted to an elevation of 40 degrees and a depression of just 18 degrees.

Trivia[]

  • The ArmA 2 Offroad is simply an updated port of the Armed Assault Offroad's model.
  • Before the release of Patch 1.05 for ArmA 2 (pre-Operation Arrowhead), its model LODs (Level of Detail) were not set up properly. This would result in the vehicle "disappearing" once it was at a certain distance away from the player's camera (the vehicle could still be shot at/destroyed, however).[2]
  • Prior to fixes introduced in the latest Steam version patches (as part of the Community Configuration Project), the Offroad's driver would not have the usual Heads Up Display (HUD) elements shown to the driver, though the gunner remain unaffected.[3]

ArmA 3[]

The Offroad is used by both Altian/Tanoan civilians, IDAP aid workers, as well as several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Civilian transportation
    • Troop transport
    • Ground vehicle repair
    • Law enforcement
    • Fire support
« The 4x4 pickup by Generic Motors is a perfect choice for farmers and hunters. The durable chassis and powerful engine have been designed to withstand anything from the cratered highways of Central Europe to the rugged terrain of the Mediterranean. The armed version is fitted either with a .50 caliber heavy machine gun or an anti-tank recoilless rifle. It provides the combination of mobility and firepower to many paramilitary and guerilla forces in local conflicts around the globe. Specialized versions, which sport a hard rear cover and rack-mounted communications equipment, are in use by law enforcement, national park rangers, and armed forces. These vehicles feature a large floodlight, loudspeakers, and long-range antennas.

Design[]

Returning once more in ArmA 3, the Offroad is primarily operated by civilians but is also utilised extensively by military and guerilla factions alike.

Features
It is available in five variants:

They can be slingloaded by the Huron and Ghost Hawk, or by the Mohawk and Hellcat, as well as the Mi-290 and PO-30. On the other hand, the vehicle transport variant of the Blackfish and Y-32 vehicle transport VTOLs are also capable of transporting them internally.

When it comes to pure speed and handling, the ArmA 3 Offroad remains mostly similar to its previous iterations and has decent acceleration both on- and off-road. However, it does have slightly better handling on all kinds of terrain. Additionally, it can attain almost double the top speed of its predecessors (201 km/h versus 114 km/h), and there is no longer a difference in performance between civilian Offroads and those operated by military/guerilla factions.

Drawbacks
As a vehicle intended for civil use, the Offroad is no different to its predecessor and obviously lacks armour plating. Some variants, particularly those operated by the FIA, even lack passenger doors which means that both the driver and its passengers are equally vulnerable to small arms fire.

Crew Capacity
Transportation capacity varies depending on the variant, but all of them are able to carry at least a single passenger who sits alongside the driver in the front section.

Variants[]

Arma3-render-offroaddarkred
Baseline variant with no additional features other than the ability to carry up to four passengers in the rear section.

All positions (except for the passenger seat next to the driver) can utilise FFV: the front two sitting in the open cargo body need to stand up in order to fire their weapons. They are able to rest their weapons on the Offroad's roof for better stability as well.

This variant is primarily used by the FIA as their troop transport but is also used by civilians and the Gendarmerie as well (it should be noted that the Gendarmerie variant has a police light bar on top).

This variant has a gross weight of 1835.91 kg.

Premium content logo
This is a premium asset that requires ownership of the Contact expansion pack.

Arma3-render-offroadcoveredblack
Identical to the baseline variant but the rear flatbed is covered by a hard roof.

This variant has a gross weight of 1937.17 kg.

Premium content logo
This is a premium asset that requires ownership of the Contact expansion pack.

Arma3-render-offroadcommsldf
Visually identical to the Covered variant but sacrifices transportation capacity for storing radio communication equipment in the rear bed.

This variant has a gross weight of 1937.17 kg.

Arma3-render-offroadservices
Carries spare parts, tools, and components that can repair nearby land vehicles and grounded aircraft. Has two seats in the rear that allows for two additional passengers to be transported.

It always uses a distinct canary yellow paint scheme with custom livery. An amber yellow light bar is placed on top of the roof and can be toggled on and off.

This variant is not utilised by the FIA and is primarily used by civilian airport workers and mechanics only.

This variant has a gross weight of 1730 kg.

Arma3-render-offroadrepairguerrilla10
Functionally identical to the Services variant bar the different camouflage scheme.

This variant has a gross weight of 1610 kg.

Arma3-render-offroadhmgguerrilla01
Armed version of the Offroad.

Using the baseline version as the base, the two main differences are its troop capacity and the .50 cal heavy machine gun fitted to the rear section. Unlike the Services/Repair variants, it can only transport the gunner, the driver, and a passenger.

The M2 heavy machine gun comes pre-loaded with a single 100-round belt box, and has up to 300 rounds worth of belt boxes in reserve (totalling 400 rounds).

This variant has a gross weight of 1805.91 kg.

Arma3-render-offroadatguerrilla12
Identical to the HMG variant but is armed with an SPG-9 73 mm recoilless gun instead.

The SPG-9 has access to either 12 PG-9N high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) or 8 OG-9VM high-explosive (HE) rounds. Transports the same number of passengers as the HMG variant.

This variant has a gross weight of 1764.25 kg.

  • Geometric: Fractal woodland camouflage pattern. Exclusive to the LDF's Offroads.

Law enforcement/Utility[]

  • Gendarmerie: Single tone paint scheme with a white stripe and GENDARMERIE signage. Exclusive to the Horizon Islands' Gendarmerie.
  • Services: Canary yellow paint scheme used by civilian repair services. Has additional livery in the form of ISLAND PORT AUTHORITY lettering written on the doors and black/bright green coloured stripes.
  • Forest Rangers: Dark green paint scheme with signage of the Livonian Forest Rangers directorate painted onto its body.

Civilian[]

  • Red: Pattern-less red paint scheme.
  • Beige: Pattern-less beige paint scheme.
  • White: Pattern-less flat white paint scheme.
  • Blue: Pattern-less dark blue paint scheme.
  • Dark Red: Pattern-less dark red paint scheme.
  • Blue (Custom): Two-tone paint scheme with a dark blue chassis/body, pearl white rear section, and bumper that has custom livery.
  • IDAP: Flat white paint scheme with additional livery in the form of IDAP logos and signage. Used exclusively by IDAP aid workers.
  • Green: Flat olive green paint finish.
  • Black: All-black paint colour scheme.

Guerilla[]

  • Guerrilla (1-12): Multiple tone paint scheme with a variety of line and stroke patterns. Utilised on all L'Ensemble/FIA guerilla-operated Offroads.

Protection[]

All variants of the Offroad have base armour values of 30. They cannot be fitted with any kind of addon armour modules.

The following highlighted positions serve as weak points on Offroads:

Arma3-offroad-hitpoints

LEGEND
Green = Body
Orange = Engine
Violet = Fuel tank

Weak point locations are identical on all variants regardless of the flatbed's contents.

Body[]

The Offroad's body can take a maximum of 30 points of damage. The body take 150% additional damage from high-explosive (HE) type munitions. Depletion of the body's integrity will always result in a catastrophic kill.

Engine[]

The engine can withstand up to 120 points of damage before it fails. It takes 50% less damage from HE-type munitions, though up to 50% of incoming damage will be shared with the Offroad's main "health" pool.

Its destruction will not cause a catastrophic kill unless the Offroad is critically damaged.

If damaged: Reduces power output, acceleration is decreased and it may become impossible to climb uphill.
If destroyed: Instantly immobilises the Offroad.

Fuel tank[]

The Offroad's fuel tank can only take a maximum of 60 points of damage before it ruptures. Only 10% of incoming damage is shared with the vehicle's main "health" pool, though it suffers a 150% increased damage penalty from HE-type munitions.

A destroyed fuel tank will not cause a catastrophic kill unless the Offroad is critically damaged.

If damaged: Gradually leak up to 10% of current fuel capacity over time.
If destroyed: Rapidly depletes entire fuel capacity over several seconds.

Wheels[]

All four wheels are able to withstand up to 120 points of damage before their tyres burst. They incur a 400% damage penalty from HE-type munitions, though no amount of incoming damage will be shared with the Offroad's main "health" pool.

Destroying all four wheels will be needed to immobilise the Offroad. Depending on which and how many are remaining, it is entirely possible for Offroads to continue driving with two out of four tyres missing (though making simple manoeuvres will be extremely difficult).

Components[]

NOTE: Cosmetic-only component modules with no gameplay effects are deliberately excluded from this section.

  • Hide left door: Removes or reattaches the left side driver door.
  • Hide right door: Removes or reattaches the right side passenger door.
  • Hide shield: Installs or removes the M2 HMG's ballistic-resistant gunshield (HMG variant only).

Armament[]

The gunner always handles the either the M2 HMG .50 or SPG-9 heavy weapons, which are mounted onto the rear flatbed.

In both cases, horizontal rotation limits are a full 360 degrees but vertically it varies depending on the weapon mount. For the M2 it is a depression of 10 degrees and elevation of 40 degrees, while the SPG-9 has a depression of only 5 degrees and an elevation of 20 degrees:

M2 HMG .50[]

Arma3-vehicleweapons-offroad-m2hmg50

NOTE: Only available on the Offroad (HMG) variant.

Main article: M2#ArmA 3

General-purpose .50 cal heavy machine gun.

It takes up to 10 seconds to reload a fresh belt box or to fully rearm from a logistics truck/supply crate. The turret mount can be freely rotated in any direction horizontally but is limited to a maximum elevation of 40 degrees and a depression of 10 degrees.

The M2 HMG does not have an integrated Fire Control System but does allow for manual zeroing. Zeroing starts from a minimum of 100 m up to a maximum of 1500 m. Adjustments are initially made with increments/decrements of 100 m at zeroing settings under 600 m. However, beyond 600 m, its zeroing skips to 800 m, 1000 m, 1200 m, and then finally 1500 m.

SPG-9[]

Arma3-vehicleweapons-offroad-spg9

NOTE: Only available on the Offroad (AT) variant.

Main article: SPG-9#ArmA 3

73 mm recoilless anti-tank gun. Can load either HE or AP-type grenades.

The gunner can look through the SPG-9's sight which has a fixed magnification zoom (night vision goggles cannot be worn while looking through the sight). The turret does not have any horizontal rotation limits but only allows for a maximum elevation of 20 degrees and a depression of just 5 degrees.

The SPG-9 does not support manual zeroing and also lacks an integrated FCS.

Trivia[]

  • The Offroad in ArmA 3 appears to be based on the 4x4 variant of the Isuzu "D-Max" (parodied as the product of an Armaverse company called Generic Motors).
  • Initially, the Syndikat could only be seen utilising the Offroad in every mission of the Apex Protocol campaign.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] After the release of the Old Man mini-campaign/scenario, they (as the L'Ensemble) would be depicted using the Offroad as well.[11]
    • In spite of this, the Syndikat/L'Ensemble still do not have access to unarmed nor armed Offroads in the Eden editor. Even within the scenarios for both Apex Protocol and Old Man, they are simply given the FIA's Offroads instead of their own dedicated versions.
  • Game Update 1.08 fixed two bugs with the Offroad. The first being that it was not possible to get into the passenger seat from their side of the door on the HMG-armed variant (the passenger entered via the driver's door instead). The second bug was that its mirrors were reversed on the left side of the vehicle.[12]
  • Prior to Game Update 1.42, Offroads that were customised with police lightbars did not have the ability to separately switch it on/off (they would automatically be activated if the user turned the vehicle's headlights on). The patch granted the Offroad's driver the ability to manually toggle its activation.[13]
  • Gendarmerie Offroads were given the ability to toggle a siren after Game Update 1.78. The patch also fixed a bug with Service variants being unable to properly switch their lightbars on.[14]
  • The HMG Offroad was initially the only armed variant that was available on ArmA 3's release. The second AT variant was eventually added with the release of the Tanks DLC.[15]
    • The DLC also granted the ability to affix a gunshield onto the M2 HMG, offering the gunner a small amount of protection from small arms fire (though only from the frontal arc).[15]
  • The Comms and Covered variants would not be added until the release of the Contact expansion pack.[16]
