The T-90 is a Main Battle Tank used exclusively by the Russian Armed Forces in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Direct fire and manoeuvre
« The GPO Uralvagonzavod T-90 is a Russian main battle tank derived from the T-72 and is the most modern tank in the Russian Ground Forces.
The T-90's main armament is the 2A46M 125 mm smoothbore anti-tank gun. It also carries the PKT - 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and the Kord - 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

Design[]

The T-90 is a further development of the T-72 Main Battle Tank. It is the latest generation model in the T-series of Russian tanks and represents an increase in firepower, mobility and protection.

Armament
It is armed with a smoothbore 125 mm cannon that can fire a mixture of armour-piercing and high-explosive shells.

The T-90 has a coaxial 7.62 mm medium machine gun that can be used against soft targets in lieu of the main gun, as well as an externally-fitted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun on the top of the turret that can be used by the tank's commander to engage low-flying aircraft.

The standard loadout of the T-90 gives it 23 rounds of armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) and 22 rounds of high-explosive (HE) shells for the main gun. A total of five SACLOS-guided anti-tank missiles are always available on standby and launch independently of the main cannon (though it is launched from the same barrel).

Meanwhile, the coaxial PKT comes pre-loaded with a 250-round belt box. It has access to a further seven boxes for a combined total of 2,000 rounds. Lastly, the externally mounted KORD comes pre-loaded with a 150-round belt box and has another three boxes left in reserve.

Features
Unlike the more ubiquitous T-72, the T-90 is solely used by the Russian Armed Forces. It is one of the most powerful ground vehicles in ArmA 2, and is unique amongst the other Main Battle Tanks for its ability to load and fire anti-tank missiles from its main cannon.

Its sole direct competitor is the American M1A1 tank. The T-90's ability to fire gun-launched ATGMs gives it superior range (especially in ambushes) and the ability to simultaneously fire two weapons at the same time by rapidly switching between them (one missile and cannon round).

Drawbacks
The T-90's armour plating is mediocre when it is matched up against the M1A1 and pales in comparison to the upgraded M1A2 TUSK. Although direct hits from medium AT launchers (MAAWS/SMAW) remain survivable, the same cannot be said for heavy anti-tank missiles like the Javelin which can inflict critical damage in just one hit.

The damage output of its 125 mm AP shells are also lacking compared to those fired by the M1A1/M1A2's M256 120 mm gun. Whereas the M1A1/M1A2 can inflict a mission kill or outright destroy the T-90 with a single round, the T-90's crew will usually need to fire at least two or hit vulnerable components like the engine in order to achieve the same outcome.

Crew Capacity
The T-90 supports a crew of three that consists of the driver, a gunner, and the commander. No passengers may be seated within the tank.

Protection[]

The T-90 has a base armour value of 800.

Successful strikes to any of the following highlighted sections will inflict full damage to the component:

Arma2-t90-hitpoints

LEGEND
Green = Hull
Orange = Engine
Light blue = Treads
Maroon = Turret

Hull[]

The hull can take 680 points of damage.

Engine[]

The engine can resist 280 points of damage before failing. A damaged engine will prevent the T-90 from attaining its top speed.

Treads[]

Both tracks can only survive 120 points of damage. Only 30% of damage is transferred onto the T-90's "health" pool.

Turret[]

The turret can incur up to 800 points of damage.

Armament[]

NOTE: For specifics on the 2A46M's munitions, see its related section listed here.

The gunner position controls all weapons except for the KORD heavy machine gun, which is handled by the commander instead.

Both the gunner and commander have access to variable zoom optics and can toggle either a day, night or green-/black-hot thermal vision mode (the commander utilises black-/white-hot instead):

2A46M[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t90-2a46m

125 mm smoothbore cannon. Can load either HE or AP-type munitions.

It can fire one shell every 5 seconds (fire rate of 12 rounds per minute). It only takes 1.5 seconds to switch between munition types or to fully rearm its stockpile from a logistics truck or supply crate.

The 2A46M can be manually zeroed, starting from a minimum of 100 m up to a maximum of 3000 m. Adjustments are made with increments/decrements of 100 m. It retains access to a laser rangefinder.

9M119M Refleks[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t90-9m119mrefleks

NOTE: Although fired from the 2A46M's barrel, 9M119M Refleks missiles are treated as a separate "weapon" that has to be switched into (it does not need to be manually loaded).

Damage type Base damage value Maximum speed (m/s)
High-Explosive Anti-Tank 760 500

Gun-launched anti-tank guided missile. Utilises SACLOS for guidance.

It takes 30 seconds before another missile can be launched, but it only takes 5 seconds to rearm all missiles (assuming the T-90's supply has been depleted and is rearming at a logistics vehicle). 9M119M missiles are fired with an initial velocity of 500 m/s but 1.5 seconds after launch, will begin to slow down to only 430 m/s after 6 more seconds of flight time. The warheads have a blast radius of 1.8 metres.

Has the same zeroing ranges as the 2A46M, though it does not actually affect the missile's flight profile.

PKT[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t90-pkt
Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
12 -0.00096 855

Coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 800 RPM and has a muzzle velocity of 855 m/s. Accuracy-wise, it always has a fixed dispersion of 0.00125 rad regardless of distance. It takes 5 seconds to reload a fresh linked belt (assuming the T-90 has run out and is rearming at a logistical vehicle).

Optics and zeroing ranges for the PKT are identical to those used by the 2A46M.

KORD[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t90-dshkm
Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
28 -0.0006 850

General-purpose 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. It is mounted above the turret and is remotely operated by the commander. It also has access to a laser rangefinder.

It can attain a fire rate of up to ~ 697 RPM with a muzzle velocity of 850 m/s. It takes 6 seconds to reload a fresh belt box. Accuracy-wise, it has a dispersion of 0.00085 rad.

Trivia[]

  • Contrary to how it was depicted in ArmA 2, the T-90 in real-life (at the time of its release) was never produced in large numbers and did not actually replace the more common Soviet-era "T-80" MBT in Russian military service.
  • Unlike the M1A1 and M1A2, the T-90's gunner and commander positions were not "upgraded" with the ability to use thermal optics even after the release of the Operation Arrowhead expansion pack.
    • This was eventually addressed with the latest Steam version patches (as part of the Community Configuration Project). Both the T-90's gunner and commander were finally granted access to thermal vision modes as part of the CCP's changes.[1]
  • Prior to the latest CorePatch updates, zeroing limits for the T-90's main gun and coaxial MG were completely different. It had a minimum zeroing of 600 m rather than 100 m and capped out at 2000 m as opposed to 3000 m. Rearming times for the 9M119M Refleks was also significantly reduced from its original time of 90 seconds.[2]
