The T-100X Futura is a variant of CSAT's T-100 Varsuk Main Battle Tank in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Railgun tank
« Rapid advancements in fuel cell technology, power systems, and material sciences have allowed CSAT weapons engineers to scale a railgun system to fit on a Main Battle Tank. Previously only available as ship-based weapons, railguns are starting to bring unprecedented projectile velocities and range to tank crews. Field testing started by fitting the cannon onto the existing T-100 platform. Several significant drawbacks are still being assessed by the Shenlong Group, such as the enormous stresses on the barrel when firing, cooling issues, and capacitor charging.

Design[]

Built upon a heavily modified T-100 chassis, the T-100X Futura exchanges the former's 125 mm smoothbore cannon in favour of a railgun.

Armament
The T-100X is primarily armed with a railgun that exclusively fires 75 mm armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot kinetic energy (APFSDS-KE) penetrators. By default, the T-100X has access to sixty of these projectiles.

For self-defence against infantry, unarmoured/light-armour ground vehicles and low-flying helicopters, the T-100X retains the T-100's turret-mounted 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. The NSVT-M HMG is always pre-loaded with a single 150-round belt box. It has only one spare belt to reload from.

Features
Armed with a powerful railgun, the T-100X is capable of hitting any ground vehicle with minimal dispersion and near-instantaneously. The toughest of NATO's tanks stand no chance at withstanding a direct hit from the T-100X's railgun. Since it can pierce through the frontal armour of any tank no matter how thick their glacis plate may be, the T-100X's crew can disable vulnerable components that would otherwise not be targetable by conventional munitions in a first strike.

Arma3-futura-03

Whether it's an IFV or an MBT, the T-100X's KE penetrators can cut through their armour with no difficulty.

Notable Traits
At maximum charge, the T-100X's railgun launches 75 mm KE penetrators that can pierce over ~ 2,000 millimetres of Rolled Homogeneous Armour (RHA).

Because these projectiles can potentially impact their targets at velocities of almost twelve times the speed of sound (4,447 m/s), the railgun is essentially a "hitscan" weapon. So long as there are no hard terrain surfaces blocking their line-of-sight, the gunner can hit a target almost instantaneously with minimal (if any) ballistic drop, and they can do so from more than double the range of a conventional 125 mm gun (>8,000 metres). Even helicopters can potentially be shot down should they fly low enough and get within the railgun's elevation arc.

Drawbacks
In order for the railgun's projectiles to be launched at their maximum velocity, the railgun must be fully charged. In addition to this charge up time, there is a mandatory delay of six seconds in-between each shot in order to allow for the railgun to cool down. Both of these delays leave the T-100X's crew vulnerable since the gunner cannot retaliate to enemy fire without prematurely discharging the railgun.

Furthermore, the railgun exclusively fires KE penetrators and does not have access to explosive projectiles. The omission of the coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun also means that the crew can only fall back on the 12.7 mm HMG if any targets get too close for the railgun to engage. Should the RWS be disabled by enemy fire or runs out of ammunition, the crew will be forced to waste the railgun's valuable KE penetrators on them instead.

Lastly, the railgun is purely a LOS weapon. Its usefulness will be limited in mountainous terrain since the KE penetrators, regardless of their penetration capability, cannot pierce through the terrain's surface. Unlike the baseline T-100 tank, it is not possible to utilise the T-100X in a (limited) non-LOS capacity.

Crew Capacity
The T-100X has a maximum seating capacity of three for a driver, a gunner and the commander. It is not able to transport any passengers.

Camouflage[]

  • Hex: Arid Hexacam camouflage pattern. Useful for forested, grass plains, and desert environments. Changes any applied camo nets to use a two-tone desert camouflage pattern.
  • Green Hex: Tropical Hexacam pattern camouflage. This is used in heavily forested and tropic environments. Attached camo netting will use a two-tone woodland camouflage pattern.
  • Grey: Pattern-less dark chrome grey paint scheme.

Protection[]

Components[]

  • Camo Net (Hull): Drapes the entire hull with camouflage netting (the turret is not covered). Partially conceals covered sections from thermal sensors.
  • Camo Net (Turret): Identical to Hull camo netting but for the turret only instead (this includes the railgun's barrel). Note that some components like the RWS or the commander's optics are not concealed.

Armament[]

The gunner exclusively controls the Railgun 75 mm while the commander handles the remotely operated NSVT-M 12.7 mm heavy machine gun.

For optics, both the gunner and commander can toggle between three fields of view and have access to day, night, and black-/white-hot thermal vision modes:

Railgun 75 mm[]

110% 800 -0.000025 4,655* 2,327.4976725*

(*) Velocity and penetration at the time of impact varies depending on the charge level, distance and hit angle. These are approximate values only and will deviate by ±4% in normal gameplay.

Railgun that fires 75 mm AP-type projectiles.

The Railgun 75 mm can only fire once every six seconds (10 rounds per minute). Accuracy-wise, it has a dispersion of 0.0002 rad. The Fire Control System has a delay of 1 second before it can finish calculations. It is not possible to manually adjust the Railgun 75 mm's zeroing.

In order for the Railgun 75 mm to begin the charge up process, the tank itself must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Have at least 11% or more fuel remaining AND
  • The engine is intact

If any of these conditions are not fulfilled, then the charge up process will be halted before it can begin (an alarm will sound to denote this status). Furthermore, projectiles will only be fired if the Railgun 75 mm is charged up to at least 30% power or more. If the gunner attempts to "fire" below this charging threshold, no projectile will actually be launched.

While the Railgun 75 mm is charging up, it will drain fuel at a factor of 0.0025. If maximum charge has already been attained (110%), then this consumption rate is decreased to a factor of 0.001 instead. It should be noted that because fuel is still consumed even when it is at maximum charge, it is advisable to fire the Railgun 75 mm immediately once it hits the limit to avoid wasting fuel.

NSVT-M 12.7 mm[]

General-purpose 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. It is affixed onto the RWS turret located above the turret and is remote-controlled by the commander.

The NSVT-M can attain a fire rate of up to 800 RPM and requires 10 seconds to reload a fresh belt. Dispersion is always fixed at 0.00144 rad regardless of a target's distance. The FCS has a fixed delay of 1 second before it can finish calculations.

Unlike the Railgun 75 mm, manual zeroing is possible on the NSVT-M. This starts from a minimum of 100 m up to a maximum of 2000 m. Adjustments are made with increments/decrements of 100 m.

Achievements[]

  • Arma3-achievement-commander
    Commander
    • Spend at least three hours controlling the T-100X from the commander's seat.
    • Can be earned in either singleplayer or multiplayer scenarios. It does not have to be accumulated in a single playthrough and can be earned over multiple sessions.
  • Arma3-achievement-inittogether
    In It Together
    • Spend a total of twenty four hours of playtime inside the T-100X with a team of human players seated (in real-world time).
    • The driver, gunner and commander seats must be occupied by humans and not AI.
    • This time can be earned over multiple sessions. There is no need for the same group of players to participate for the hours to accumulate.

Trivia[]

  • The T-100X's moniker ("Futura") is a reference to ArmA 3's codename when it was still in development.[1][2][3]
  • Screenshots released during the pre-Alpha phase of ArmA 3's development showed that the Futura was originally meant to have been included at release.[4]
    • On a Twitch livestream event held on March 8th, 2023[5], Bohemia Interactive developers Ivan Buchta and Joris-Jan van 't Land provided further background details on the design philosophy and decision to (initially) scrap the railgun-armed T-100 from release:
      • The choice of arming it with a railgun was intended to showcase CSAT's technological prowess over NATO on the battlefield.[6]
      • The decision to remove the tank's railgun loadout altogether was due to an internal review of faction assets that "[...] demanded a more traditional set of equipment and vehicles".[7] Additionally, its model was unfinished at the time as only some exterior sections of the Futura, specifically the barrel and rear of the turret, were in a (mostly) complete state.[3]
    • It would not be until Game Update 2.14 that the Futura would finally be added into the game as bonus content in celebration of ArmA 3's tenth anniversary.[8]
  • The Futura actually uses two weapons: the real railgun weapon[9] and a "fake" dummy railgun[10]. By default, the dummy railgun launches 75 mm penetrators with a fixed velocity of 3,000 m/s and has a "reloading" time of 6 seconds to simulate the railgun cooling down.[11][12] However, a script then modifies the velocity of the real projectile a split second after it is launched, with velocity being reduced or increased based on the charge level at the time of firing.[13][14]
  • At launch, the Futura's railgun could not be properly utilised in multiplayer if there was another human player manning the driver's seat. This was corrected after a hotfix for Game Update 2.14 was released.[15]
  • Its railgun is stated to be the product of an Armaverse company, the Shenlong Group.[16]
  • Not including the Railgun Tower structure from Mobile Ops, the Futura's reintroduction marks the first time that a railgun has officially been featured as a usable weapon in the entire series.
