NOTE: This article is about AK-74s in the main ARMA games. For AK-74Ns in ArmA 3's Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC, see AK-74 (Global Mobilization). |
The AK-74 is a 5.45 mm assault rifle that has been featured in all of the ARMA games to date, beginning with ArmA: Cold War Assault and all the way to ARMA Reforger.
ArmA: Cold War Assault[]
« | The AK-74 assault rifle was manufactured in 1979 by Avtomat Kalashnikova, to replace the aging AK-47. The Kalashnikov sub-machineguns are well known for their reliability. The AK-74 was designed for army personnel and law and order forces. Weapon Description
|
» |
The AK-74 is used by both Soviet military forces and Nogovan Partisans in ArmA: Cold War Assault.
Overview[]
The AK-74 is a selective fire assault rifle that is chambered to fire the ubiquitous 5.45×39 mm round.
It loads from 30-round plastic magazines, is capable of attaining a fire rate of up to 650 rounds per minute, and has a muzzle velocity of 900 m/s. The AK-74 is accurate at distances of up to 400 metres.
Replacing the long-outdated AK-47, the AK-74 is the latest model in the Kalashnikov assault rifle family. It is primarily used by the Soviet Armed Forces, though stocks of AK-74s have also fallen into the hands of anti-Soviet resistance groups.
Unlike the older AK-47, the AK-74 fires the smaller but lighter 5.45 mm round. Though it has reduced stopping power compared to the AK-47's 7.62 mm, the AK-74 makes up for it by being far more accurate at distances of beyond 250 metres. In addition, it has much less recoil which renders it easier to control when firing on full auto.
In some respects, the AK-74 is slightly superior to its American counterpart in close quarters. Whereas the M16A2 is limited to a 3-round burst fire mode only, the AK-74 has access to all three modes (semi-auto, burst, full auto) and does not leave its user vulnerable should they miss their initial shots.
Variants[]
AK-74 GL[]
The AK-74 GL is a modified variant of the baseline AK-74 rifle fitted with an underbarrel 40 mm grenade launcher.
The AK-74's GP-25 grenade launcher is accurate at distances of up to 250 metres, and can launch either high-explosive (HE) or flare rounds. There are no other differences with regards to performance or functionality.
AK-74 SU[]
« | The version was developed from the AK-74, but radically differs from it in terms of the design of separate units and combat characteristics. The AK-74 SU features a short barrel, lesser muzzle velocity, high rate of fire, but more lower consistency of fire, compared to thet of AK-74. The AK-74 SU is intended for special subunits of airborne troops, combat engineers and drivers of combat vehicles. Weapon Description
|
» |
The AK-74 SU is a carbine variant of the baseline AK-74 rifle. It is the primary weapon of Soviet ground vehicle and aircraft crewmen along with some Spetsnaz operatives.
Aside from its shorter barrel, it is barely any different (statistically) to regular AK-74s as it fires the same 5.45 mm round as its parent. The main difference is that it is much less accurate when firing on burst. However, this is barely noticeable in close quarters and will not become apparent unless the user intends to attack targets standing 200 metres or more away from their position.
Ironsights[]
Both the AK-74 and the AK-74 SU carbine share the same ironsights.

The AK-74 is used primarily by the SLA and in limited numbers with Resistance guerillas in ArmA: Armed Assault.
Overview[]
The AK-74 returns from Cold War Assault and is the service weapon of all SLA infantry and anti-Kingdom guerilla fighters. It continues to load from 30-round plastic magazines and can achieve a fire rate of up to 600 RPM. The AK-74 is not available in any variants fitted with optical sights or muzzle attachments.
It is a general-purpose rifle that is accurate out to a range of approximately 400-500 metres. However, because the baseline weapon lacks optical sights and has hard-to-use tangential ironsights, it can be somewhat difficult to reliably land shots at these distances. Which in practice, limits its actual effective range to just 400 metres or less.
Variants[]
AK-74 + GP-25[]
The AK-74 + GP-25 is simply a modified AK-74 that has been fitted with an underbarrel grenade launcher.
The underbarrel GP-25 can load either 40 mm high-explosive (HE) or illumination flare rounds. Its 40 mm grenades are not interchangeable with those used by the M4 carbine or the M16A4's M203 (and vice versa).
AKS-74 PSO[]
The AKS-74 PSO is a slightly modified variant of the baseline rifle. Aesthetically, it uses a metallic stock rather than a fixed wooden one.
The AKS-74 PSO's primary advantage lies in its telescopic sight, which is always attached to it by default. The scope effectively extends its range to just over 400 metres and makes aiming at those distances easier. However, it is slightly more cumbersome to wield, and remains statistically identical to its parent weapon when it comes to accuracy, fire rate and recoil.
AKS-74U[]
« | The AKS-74U is a personal defense weapon for vehicles and helicopter crews, and for the special operations forces, who require a compact and relatively powerful weapon in a single package. While the AKS-74U is the size a typical submachine gun, it has the advantage of using the standard assault rifle ammunition and magazines. Library Description

» |
The AKS-74U is a carbine configuration of the baseline AK-74 rifle.
Aside from having almost twice as much dispersion against targets located beyond 250 metres, the AKS-74U is largely indifferent overall performance-wise. This is the only variant of the AK-74 that can be fitted with a sound suppressor. It is designated as the AKS-74UN and can load the same magazines as its parent weapon.

30Rnd. AK SD[]
Specialised magazine loaded with subsonic 5.45 mm ammunition. Rounds fired from this magazine specifically have a lower muzzle velocity of 320 m/s.
Trivia[]
- The AKS-74 PSO variant was not added until the release of Patch 1.04.[3]
- Before Patch 1.05, the AKS-74 PSO's scope was not zeroed correctly and would be wildly inaccurate against targets located beyond 300 metres. This was fixed by the patch so that the AKS-74 PSO now uses a fixed zeroing of 200 metres.[4]

ArmA 2[]
« | The AK-74 is the successor to the famous AK-47, resizing its caliber to 5.45mm, probably as reaction to the ubiquitous 5.56mm NATO. The most visible modification is the muzzle brake. This muzzle brake drastically cuts the already mild recoil of the AK-74 but increases noise and muzzle flash. Armoury Description
|
» |
The AK-74 is used by several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 2.
Overview[]
Returning from Armed Assault, the AK-74 has largely remained unchanged aside from the addition of a few more variants.
Once again, it still loads from 30-round plastic magazines and has an identical rate of fire (600 RPM), though unlike its predecessor, the AK-74 is now available in a variety of sub-variants with various optical sights and muzzle attachments fitted.
When it is compared to its antiquated counterpart, the AKM, the AK-74 fires a smaller and slightly less powerful round but is lighter to carry and is more accurate at longer ranges.
However, when it is matched up against the M16A4 and Mk16 rifles, the AK-74 is vastly inferior in terms of accuracy. It has almost 25% increased dispersion against targets located beyond ~ 460 metres, making the AK-74 almost as inaccurate as carbines but with none of the advantages of the latter.
Variants[]
AK-74 GP-25[]
« | The AK-74 is the successor to the infamous AK-47, resizing its caliber to 5.45mm, probably in response to the ubiquity of the 5.56mm NATO round. This version features an additional GP-25 40mm grenade launcher. Armoury Description
|
» |
The AK-74 GP-25 is simply a modified variant of the baseline AK-74 that has been fitted with an underbarrel grenade launcher.
The underbarrel GP-25 can load a variety of 40 mm high-explosive (HE), smoke or flare grenades. Note that its 40 mm grenades are not interchangeable with those used by the M4A1/M16A4's M203, nor those of the EGLM used by the SCAR series of assault/battle rifles (and vice versa).
There is also an additional variant of the AK-74 GP-25 that has a Kobra collimator sight mounted on top by default and it is designated as the AK-74 GP-25 Kobra. It was added with the release of the Operation Arrowhead expansion.
AKS-74[]
« | The AK-74 is the successor to the infamous AK-47, resizing its caliber to 5.45mm, probably in response to the ubiquity of the 5.56mm NATO round. This weapon features an adjustement with a ""night-fighting"" configuration. Armoury Description
|
» |
The AKS-74 is a modified variant of the baseline rifle that has a folding stock. It is virtually identical to the baseline rifle aside from the stock.
It is notable for being the only variant of the AK-74 that has the most options when it comes to accessories. These choices range from the Kobra collimator to the PSO-1 telescopic sight, as well as the NSPU night vision sight. However unlike with the AKS-74U, there are no variants of the AKS-74 that have suppressors attached by default.
There is also an additional variant that has a GOSHAWK thermal scope mounted on top and is designated as the AKS-74 Goshawk. It was added with the release of the Operation Arrowhead expansion.

|
» |
The AKS-74U is a carbine variant of the baseline AK-74 rifle.
Normally carried by tank crews, pilots and team leaders, it is virtually identical in all other aspects aside from having a smaller effective range compared to its rifle counterpart due to its shorter barrel (and being slightly less accurate as a result).
There is also an additional variant of the AKS-74U that has a Kobra optic mounted on top and a suppressor attached to the muzzle. This specific variant is designated as the AKS-74UN Kobra and is exclusively used by the Takistani Army's elite troops. This variant is also chambered to fire the same 5.45×39 mm round but uses special subsonic ammunition that can only be loaded by the AKS-74UN (the magazines themselves are not interchangeable).
Sights[]
Camouflage[]
- Black: Black/dark grey scheme with wooden furniture and stock. Applied onto baseline AK-74s and AKS-74s (AKS-74s use a black stock).
- Plum: Black finish with plum-coloured furniture. Exclusive to AKS-74U carbines.

All variants of the AK-74 support being loaded with two types of magazines. They each occupy a single primary weapon magazine inventory slot:
30Rnd. AK[]
Standard 30-round plastic magazine loaded with 5.45 mm ball ammunition. None of the rounds fired will emit visible tracers.
30Rnd. AK SD[]
Specialised magazine loaded with subsonic 5.45 mm ammunition. Rounds fired from this magazine specifically have a lower muzzle velocity of 320 m/s.
Trivia[]
- Russian soldiers in ArmA 2 are unauthentically depicted with carrying the AK-107 as their service rifle instead of an improved AK-74 variant designated as the "AK-74M" (GRAU index code: 6P34). As of 2019, the AK-74M was still the standard-issue weapon of the Russian military.
- The latest Steam version updates (as part of ArmA 2's End-of-Life patches) have applied numerous fixes and gameplay changes to the AK-74:
- CorePatch added zeroing functionality to the baseline AK-74 rifle with no optics fitted (it was not possible to adjust zeroing even after Operation Arrowhead's release).[5]
- AKS-74s fitted with the GOSHAWK thermal sight had their model's memory points adjusted so that there is slightly less clipping in first person (addressed by CorePatch).[5]
- An ironsights-only configuration of the AKS-74UN with no Kobra sight was added (by CorePatch).[5]
- The sight picture of all AK-74s was adjusted to a more correct one (also by CorePatch).[5]
- Recoil was significantly reduced on all AK-74 variants (Community Configuration Project).[6]
- The AKS-74UN Kobra was not actually suppressed due to a misconfiguration, which meant that the user was still fully audible at normal range to AI-controlled units even when firing its subsonic ammunition (also fixed by the CCP).[6]

ArmA 3[]
« | The AKS-74U is basically a shortened AK-74, which enabled significant production savings. Like the AK-74, this variant is also chambered in 5.45x39 mm, but its compact dimensions make it suitable for special forces, vehicle crews, police patrols, etcetera. However, the lower muzzle velocity makes the AKS-74U effective up to around 400 meters only. Field Manual

» |
The AKS-74U is used by several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the Apex DLC.
Overview[]
Favoured by both criminals and insurgents alike, the AKS-74U continues to remain as a compact and reliable carbine in ArmA 3.
It still loads from 30-round plastic magazines but can now attain a fire rate of up to 705 RPM. The AKS-74U has a muzzle velocity of 735 m/s but unlike its ArmA 2 counterpart, the ArmA 3 AKS-74U lacks the ability to mount accessories and cannot be fitted with muzzle attachments.
The AKS-74U is best suited for close quarters combat thanks to its compact size, light weight, and minimal inertia penalty. It has a maximum zeroing range of 600 metres but given its shortened barrel length and increased dispersion, the AKS-74U is mostly redundant for targets beyond 300 metres.
Due to its low muzzle velocity and below average fire rate (only the MXC's fire rate is less than that of the AKS-74U's), the AKS-74U is quite a niche carbine that has too few upsides and plenty of disadvantages. Unless there are no alternatives to be had, the AKS-74U should always be discarded in favour of better carbines in its class.
Ironsights[]
The AKS-74U's ironsights can be zeroed starting from a minimum of 100 metres up to a maximum of 600 metres (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600).
It uses a default zeroing of 200 metres. The ironsights are not illuminated.
Ammunition[]
Base damage value | Aerodynamic friction | Initial velocity (m/s) | Penetration depth (mm) |
---|---|---|---|
8 | -0.0013 | 735 | 6.615 |
The AKS-74U supports four types of magazines. They all have identical weights of 8 "mass" apiece:
5.45 mm 30Rnd Reload Tracer (Yellow) Mag[]
30-round plastic magazine. The last four rounds will always consist of yellow tracers.
5.45 mm 30Rnd Reload Tracer (Green) Mag[]
Identical to regular 30-rounders, but the last four tracers are coloured in green instead.
5.45 mm 30Rnd Tracer (Yellow) Mag[]
Contains 30 rounds worth of visible yellow tracers.
5.45 mm 30Rnd Tracer (Green) Mag[]
Identical to yellow tracer magazines but consists of 30 green-coloured tracers instead.
Trivia[]
- It is one of the few weapons in ArmA 3 that uses its real-world manufacturer name.
- Prior to the release of the Tac-Ops DLC, the AKS-74U was exclusively portrayed as a Syndikat-exclusive weapon. It was later changed with the release of the DLC's first scenario, Beyond Hope, which showed the weapon in use by Altian Government Loyalists (the predecessors of the modern-day FIA).[7]
- The Old Man mini-campaign/scenario also depicts Tanoan Gendarmerie officers wielding the AKS-74U, though only some tactical units utilise it in lieu of the Protector SMG.[8]

ARMA Reforger[]

|
» |
The AK-74 is used exclusively by Soviet military forces in ARMA Reforger.
Overview[]
- This section is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
Reforger's AK-74 remains as a selective-fire assault rifle chambered for the 5.45×39 mm cartridge.
Unlike ArmA 3's AKS-74U carbine, Reforger's AK-74 has a fire rate of 650 RPM and a muzzle velocity of 890 m/s. It can share its magazines with the RPK-74 light support weapon or alternately feed from the latter's unique 45-round curved magazines.
Just like in ArmA 3, the baseline AK-74 rifle still cannot be fitted with optical sights nor muzzle suppressors. However, unlike its predecessors in ArmA 2, Armed Assault, and Cold War Assault, the user can now freely choose to remove or mount the GP-25 grenade launcher onto the weapon's underbarrel slot (it is considered to be an attachment as opposed to a standalone weapon variant).
The AK-74 occupies 2x1 inventory slots and has a volume of 1,500 cm3. If it is taken from an Arsenal Box, the AK-74 has a Supply cost of 10 units.
Variants[]
AK-74N[]
« | 5.45×39mm assault rifle with rail system for mounting optics. Weapon Description
|
» |
The AK-74N incorporates a Dovetail mount to support the attachment of optical sights. As a result, unlike the baseline AK-74 the AK-74N allows the user to mount a telescopic sight with a fixed magnification of 4x.
Aside from the addition of this functionality, it remains statistically identical to the baseline AK-74 rifle in every other way, though its Supply cost is more than twice as expensive compared to the baseline AK-74 rifle (25 units).
Ironsights[]
However, it should be noted that AK-74s always have a default zeroing of 440 metres. If the user attempts to adjust its zeroing, it will jump to 100 metres instead. To reset the zeroing back to 440 metres, zeroing must be adjusted to "below" 100 metres.
Both the front and rear sight are not illuminated.

Both the front and rear sight are not illuminated.
It should be noted that the GP-25's quadrant sights are not illuminated.
Melee[]
A buttstroke with either variant of the AK-74 will inflict 45 points of damage to the target (assuming no reductions by protective vests). It has a maximum range of 1 metre.

Both variants of the AK-74 are able to load up to four types of magazines. Its default 30-rounder magazines are fully interchangeable with the RPK-74 light support weapon (and vice versa with the latter's 45-round curved magazines):
5.45×39mm 30rnd AK Mag[]
Standard 30-round plastic magazine loaded with a mix of 7N6 ball and 7T3 tracer ammunition (with a 25/5 split). Only the last five rounds of the magazine actually consist of tracers.
When fully loaded with all thirty rounds, it has a weight of 0.53 kg (each round in the magazine has a weight of 0.01 kg) whereas an empty magazine only weighs 0.23 kg. Each magazine will occupy a 1x1 inventory slot and has a volume of 200 cm3.
This magazine is freely obtainable from Arsenal Box crates or a Resupply Pack and does not have a Supply cost.
5.45×39mm 30rnd AK Tracer Mag[]
Tracer magazine loaded with 7T3 ammunition. All thirty rounds of the magazine will emit visible tracers.
It shares the same weight, inventory slot layout, and volume space requirements with the AK-74's stock 30-round magazines. It is similarly free to take from Arsenal Boxes and does not cost Supplies.
5.45×39mm 45rnd RPK-74 Mag[]
45-round curved magazine intended for use on the RPK-74. It features a mixed load that combines both 7N6 and 7T3 ammunition. Every fifth round fired consists of a visible tracer. However, the last six rounds of the magazine will consist entirely of visible tracers.
45-rounder magazines occupy 1x1 inventory slots and have a volume of 300 cm3. It has a weight of 0.75 kg when fully loaded with all 45 rounds. An empty 45-rounder magazine only has a weight of 0.30 kg.
Unlike baseline AK-74 magazines, RPK-74 magazines are not freely obtainable from Arsenal Boxes/Resupply Packs and have a Supply cost of 1 unit.
5.45×39mm 45rnd RPK-74 Tracer Mag[]
Dedicated tracer magazine. All loaded rounds comprise of 7T3 tracers.
It weighs the same as the standard mixed load 45-rounder magazine. Just like the standard RPK-74 magazines, they share the same Supply cost and are not free to take from Arsenal Boxes.
Trivia[]
- Prior to Update 0.9.7, the AK-74 was also shared with the FIA. The patch subsequently removed the AK-74 from the FIA's pool of weapons and replaced it with the (then-new) Sa 58 family of rifles.[9]
- The update also refactored Reforger's weighting system and now properly accounts for each individual round inside the AK-74's magazines.[9]
- Before its inclusion in Update 1.1[10], the AK-74N variant was teased in an official social media post on February 13th, 2024.[11]
- After the release of Update 1.1, the AK-74's model (as well as its magazines) from the Early Access period was replaced with a new one as part of the content in the Resistance Ops patch.[10]
- The patch also added the (then-new) AK-74N sub-variant and replaced the GP-25's model with a new one as well.[10]
