NOTE: This article is about helmets worn by helicopter pilots in ArmA 3 itself. For its counterpart in the Reaction Forces Creator DLC, see Heli Pilot Helmet (Reaction Forces). |
The Heli Pilot Helmet is a ballistic-resistant helmet worn by BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR helicopter pilots in ArmA 3.
Overview[]
The Heli Pilot Helmet is worn by the rotary-wing pilots of NATO, CSAT, the LDF, and the AAF. It has a weight of 30 "mass" units.
Rated at only Level II protection standards, Heli Pilot Helmets offer minimal resistance to small arms fire. Rather, they are intended to shield the wearer from the indirect blasts. Additionally, it should be noted that the visor does not protect the wearer's face.
Variants[]
Heli Crew Helmet[]
A modified variant of the baseline helmet that has a maxillofacial shield attached to the front of the helmet, covering the user's nose and mouth.
It is also rated at Level II standards, though the Heli Crew variant provides marginally better protection for the wearer due to the addition of the face shield. As a consequence, it is much heavier compared to the regular helmet and weighs 50 "mass" units instead.

Camouflage[]
- Black: Matte black paint finish. Used on variants worn by NATO aviators.
- Khaki: Flat olive paint finish. Used by both LDF and CSAT helicopter pilots/crews.
- Digital: Digitised semi-fractal camouflage pattern. Exclusively employed on AAF variants.
Trivia[]
- Heli Pilot Helmets are modelled on real-world "HGU-56/P" aircrew helmets designed by the Gentex Corporation. On the other hand, the face shields fitted to Heli Crew variants are based on the "Maxillofacial Shield" (MFS) also manufactured by Gentex specifically for use on its products.
- Oddly enough, they are also shared with in-game CSAT forces. Both the Iranian Armed Forces and Chinese People's Liberation Army/People's Liberation Army Air Force utilise their own indigenous designs and would not be using an American-made helmet.[1]
- At ArmA 3's full launch, Heli Pilot Helmets (and their Crew sub-variants) offered minimal protection for their wearers and did not actually reduce much damage from explosions (base armour/damage reduction modifier values of 1.8/20% and 1.2/40% for the pilot and crew helmets, respectively). This was eventually changed after the release of Game Update 1.46.[2]
- The information below details unused, pre-release or removed content.
- An unused variant of the helmet (Model name: headgear_helmet_heli_visor_up.p3d) can be found within the game files. When configured and added into the game through a custom addon, it is visibly identical to regular Heli Pilot Helmets but has a retracted visor.[3]
