« The Sting is a 9x21 mm submachine gun. The weapon is designed to be used by security forces, vehicle crews and special forces. Due to its small size, accuracy, ambidextrous use and rate of fire, it became a popular SMG around the world.

The Sting 9 mm submachine gun.

The Sting is a 9 mm submachine gun used by CSAT forces, Altian criminal groups, and L'Ensemble guerillas in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

The Sting is a selective-fire, blowback-operated submachine gun that is chambered to fire the the 9×21 mm round.

It loads from 30-round translucent box magazines and can attain a fire rate of up to 1,100 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 370 m/s. The Sting can be fitted with accessories onto its top and side rails, and is also able to mount suppressors onto its muzzle.

Handling-wise, the Sting is a stable platform and its recoil is easy to control. Similar to other SMGs, the Sting possesses a high fire rate, with its only drawback being the low damage output and range of its 9 mm round.

Regardless of fire mode, the Sting has little recoil and is the most accurate SMG in its class. At distances of 200 metres or less, the user can instantly unload a hail of fire onto any targets with minimal dispersion.

Although the Sting is only intended for use by vehicle crewmen and pilots, its light weight allows it to be comfortably stored within most small backpacks. As a result, specialist classes like snipers may find it ideal to carry as a backup weapon.

In all other instances however, it is only recommended to wield the Sting as a primary weapon if the user expects to fight in close quarters exclusively. As with all other SMGs, it possesses far too many drawbacks inherent to SMGs; namely, the inability to attack targets located at distances of 300 metres and beyond.

Ironsights[]

Arma3-sting-ironsight-overview

The Sting's ironsights can zeroed between two fixed ranges of either 100 metres or 200 metres. Both the front and rear sight are illuminated and can be used in low-light conditions. The dots appear white in daylight but will glow in a lime green colour under darkness.

If an optical sight is attached onto the rail, the Sting will only permit an absolute maximum zeroing of 600 metres even if the optic itself supports a higher limit (e.g. DMS).

The Sting supports being loaded with a total of eight types of magazines which are actually divided into two subgroups of four (also shared with the PDW2000/Protector). Aside from their appearance, they are functionally identical to each other and are fully interchangeable between the platforms.

Regardless of the SMG that they are intended for, they all share the same weight of 10 "mass" units:

NOTE: The following magazines are NOT interchangeable with the PDW2000 but CAN be used with the Protector.

9 mm 30Rnd Mag[]

Trivia[]

  • The Sting is based on the "Scorpion Evo 3" (more specifically the A1 variant) designed by Česká Zbrojovka Uherský Brod (CZ).
  • Specific AAF troopers can be seen wielding the Sting throughout the main campaign's optional Scouting scenarios[1][2] and specific storyline missions[3], though they do not actually use it elsewhere in the campaign (nor any other scenario for that matter).
  • When the Sting was originally added in the Beta as part of Game Update 0.70, it was referred to as the Scorpion EVO-4.[4]
    • Before ArmA 3's Alpha was officially launched, it was also simply designated as the Scorpion in pre-Alpha builds of the game.[5]
  • Before the release of Game Update 1.92, the Sting's (and also the Protector's) translucent magazines were fully interchangeable with the PDW2000. The patch subsequently removed that capability due to the new magazine proxies system.[6]
    • Neither the Sting nor the Protector's models have been updated with the new system, however. As a result, the Sting's translucent box will still appear as a metallic magazine when loaded into the Protector.
  • Prior to the Old Man mini-campaign, Sting SMGs were exclusive to CSAT forces. Following its release, L'Ensemble anti-government fighters are also shown wielding the SMG.[7]
  • The translucent box magazine - which should allow for visual confirmation of remaining rounds, is mostly covered up by the shooter's support hand in first-person view.
    • This can be "remedied" by using Freelook to look down at the weapon and pressing the Inventory key. Opening the inventory raises the weapon away from the support hand, allowing the magazine to be checked through the translucent inventory screen.
The information below details unused, pre-release or removed content.
  • Based on unused sound files, the Sting presumably served as a placeholder weapon for the SDAR at some point during the pre-Alpha phase of ArmA 3's development.
    • This becomes apparent with the existence of sound files which are specifically meant to be played when the Sting is fired or reloaded when it is submerged in water (Sound files: underwater_smg_02_reload.wss[8], underwater_smg_02_st_1b.wss[9], underwater_smg_02_st_2b.wss[10], underwater_smg_02_st_3b.wss[11]).
    • Based on a few official pre-Alpha screenshots[12], it was also seemingly classified as a NATO weapon prior to the Vermin's inclusion.
