The Jeep is a Light Utility Vehicle used by U.S. military forces, EFA guerillas and Nogovan law enforcement officers in ArmA: Cold War Assault.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Utility vehicle
    • Troop transport
    • Armed scout
    • Law enforcement
« Brought into service in late 70s, this .25 ton 4x4 utility vehicle has seen successful military service in 15 different NATO countries. The M151’s flexibility of design means that it can easily be retrofitted as a Multi-Utility Tactical Truck (MUTT) or a Fast Attack Vehicle (FAV).

Design[]

Designed to replace the previous older Willys MB in use throughout the U.S. Armed Forces, the Jeep uses the same basic layout and dimensions of its predecessor but has a greater payload capacity and overall improved handling.

Features
It is available in two more variants aside from the baseline troop carrier: an armed scout that has a .50 cal heavy machine gun turret attached to the rear, and an unarmed civil variant designed for law enforcement use.

A multi-role 4x4 platform, the Jeep is highly versatile and makes for an excellent scouting/troop transport vehicle. Unlike the Soviet UAZ and its bulkier cousin, the HMMWV, the Jeep is one of the fastest ground vehicles available and can quickly outperform its rivals in almost every aspect. It is also notable for being the only vehicle in its class that has an armed sub-variant, which makes it useful as an armed scouting vehicle as well.

OFP-jeep-03

While obviously not intended for direct combat, MG Jeeps can serve effectively in the armed scout role.

Mobility
One of the fastest ground vehicles in Cold War Assault, the Jeep is capable of reaching a maximum speed limit of ~ 110 km/h depending on the terrain. It generally has decent handling even while going off-road, but caution should be advised as the Jeep is prone to rollovers at high speeds or when driving over bumpy terrain.

Drawbacks
Like its Soviet counterpart, the Jeep lacks overhead cover (the tarpaulin cover does not provide ballistic protection) for its passengers and crew which leaves all of its riders equally vulnerable to being injured or outright killed by enemy fire.

In addition, its fuel consumption rate is significantly much higher than the former's. After approximately twenty kilometres of travel, its tank will be almost depleted. Furthermore, it is more vulnerable to vehicle collisions as crashing into an object or other vehicles even at moderately fast speeds will result in severe (if not fatal) injuries to both the driver and passenger.

Crew Capacity
All Jeep variants have at least two seats for the driver and a single passenger who sits beside them in the front. Depending on whether it is armed or not, it may also have extra seats for additional passengers or a rear gunner.

Variants[]

OFP-render-jeepguerrilla
Baseline unarmed troop transport variant.

The top of the vehicle is covered by a tarpaulin but does not protect them from gunfire. Can transport up to three passengers, with one sitting in the front-right seat and two more in the rear.

The non-military variant on the other hand, features a different body that is completely covered by a canvas tarpaulin and has FIA initials spraypainted onto the hood. It has a slightly lower speed and acceleration but remains otherwise functionally identical to U.S. military Jeeps.

OFP-render-jeepmgolive
Armed scout variant.

Identical to the baseline variant in terms of performance but has the rear two seats replaced with a .50 cal HMG instead. The HMG feeds from a single 500-round linked belt but cannot be reloaded without a supply truck to do so.

It can only transport a single passenger.

OFP-render-jeeppolice
Civilian law enforcement variant.

Has completely identical passenger capacity and performance statistics as the baseline model, though it is slightly slower by approximately ~ 1 km/h. The main difference is that it has less armour than the U.S. military Jeep, which makes it even more vulnerable to small arms fire.

This variant is only used by Nogovan police officers.

Camouflage[]

  • M151A2: Standard olive drab paint scheme. Used by U.S. military forces.
  • Willys MB: Olive drab paint scheme but customised with guerilla markings. Exclusive to FIA guerillas.
  • Willys CJ5: Flat white paint scheme with stripes and police markings. Only used on Nogovan police Jeeps.

Protection[]

All variants of the Jeep have 20 points worth of armour plating.

Armament[]

The gunner on the armed variant operates the rear-mounted M2 heavy machine gun:

M2[]

Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
13 1,000

General-purpose .50 cal heavy machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 600 rounds per minute and has a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s. Accuracy-wise, it has a dispersion value of 0.0006 rad regardless of range.

Trivia[]

  • Jeeps used by the in-game U.S. faction are based on the real-world "M151A2 Military Utility Tactical Truck" (MUTT), while the Nogovan police variant is modelled after the "CJ5" designed by Jeep (now owned as a subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.)
    • Guerilla variants on the other hand, are modelled after the Second World War-era "Willys MB", designed and produced by Willys-Overland Motors (and partially also by the Ford Motor Company).
  • The police variant of the Jeep was not actually included as part of the default set of vehicles that could be driven in Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (the original release name of Cold War Assault) and was only made available with the release of the Resistance expansion pack.[1]
  • At launch, a bug would potentially force the Jeep's driver and any passengers aboard to aim their weapons in first person the instant they dismounted from the vehicle. This was fixed after Patch 1.40 for the original OFP: CWC release.[2]
The information below details unused, pre-release or removed content.
  • Both in pre-release (then-known as Operation Flashpoint DEMO[3]) and final versions of Cold War Assault the guerilla Jeep was shared with U.S. military forces until this was later changed in Patch 1.46, when faction-specific Jeeps were finally introduced alongside the Soviet UAZ.[4]
  • When they were still shared with U.S. forces, guerilla Jeeps originally featured a white U.S. star on their hoods and backsides which were later replaced by "FIA" markings. It also featured thinner tyres and much higher ground clearance.
    • Additionally, the standard-issue M16 magazine pouches with "US" written on them can still be found on both of the dashboard's corners; holdovers of the vehicle's origins as a shared model.
    • This change also suggests that the Jeep MG originally did not exist until later versions of the game, given that it was only then introduced alongside the newer M151A2 model for U.S. forces to replace the previous Willys MB before being redesigned and made into a guerilla-exclusive vehicle.
