NOTE: This article is about U.S. military Mark II PBRs in ArmA: CWA. For its MACV-SOG counterpart in ArmA 3's S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC, see PBR MkII (S.O.G.).

The Mark II PBR is a light patrol vessel used exclusively by U.S. military forces in ArmA: Cold War Assault.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Coastguard
    • Troop transport
« A patrol boat, riverine (PBR) is a high speed, armed, and lightly armored patrol boat used to conduct riverine interdiction and surveillance operations. Riverine operations integrate and employ various types of ground, maritime, air, and special operations forces in a concerted effort to gain and/or maintain control of riverine, coastal, or delta areas.

Design[]

The PBR is a small patrol ship that is intended to be used to patrol shorelines and waterways, as well as preventing enemy amphibious assaults.

Armament
It has twin .50 cal heavy machine guns in a dual-mount configuration fixed onto a turret located in the bow. The HMGs feed from a single 500-round belt box and have no spare belts to reload from.

Features
Designed to patrol shorelines and ferry troops across water, the PBR is a relatively fast attack boat that can pick up or drop-off passengers while providing some covering fire with its .50 cal HMG.

In a sense, it can treated as a naval version of the M113 armoured personnel carrier: both are capable of traversing in water, and are also intended to be armed troop transports. While the PBR is restricted to carrying two less passengers at a time (compared to the M113's passenger limit of eight), it retains the advantage of being able to sail faster over water. Obviously, the only downside is that the PBR cannot traverse on land like the M113.

Crew Capacity
The PBR supports a crew of two that consists of the driver and the gunner. It is able to transport up to six passengers who sit in the rear deck.

Protection[]

The PBR has 100 points worth of armour plating.

Armament[]

The gunner is seated within the turret cupola and controls the dual-mount M2 .50 heavy machine guns.

For rotation, the gunner's cupola can be freely swivelled up to a maximum of 135 degrees horizontally, but is vertically limited to an elevation of 40 degrees and a depression of only 5 degrees:

They can attain fire rates of up to 600 rounds per minute and have muzzle velocities of 1,000 m/s. Accuracy-wise, they have a dispersion of 0.0007 rad at distances of 1,000 metres away.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Patch 1.10 for Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (the former name of Cold War Assault before its re-release), PBRs that expended all their ammunition could potentially cause the game to inexplicably crash without warning.[1]
  • Before the release of Patch 1.20, the PBR's gunner could zoom in even though the M2s lack a magnified sight. This "ability" was subsequently disabled by the patch's release.[2]
  • Like the M1A1 and T-80 tanks, the PBR also features a unique variant (Classname: BoatWAuto) that allows the driver to control the HMG turret while driving at the same time.[3]
  • The PBR and its Soviet counterpart are the only two armed vessels in Cold War Assault and are also the first to be outfitted as such in the entire series (prior the introduction of the RHIB in Armed Assault and ArmA 2).
