NOTE: This article is about T-55 tanks in the main ARMA games. For Warsaw Pact T-55s in ArmA 3's Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC, see T-55 (Global Mobilization).

The T-55 is a Medium Tank featured in both ArmA: Cold War Assault and ArmA 2.

ArmA: Cold War Assault[]

The T-55 is used exclusively by the Nogovan Partisans in ArmA: Cold War Assault.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Fire support
« T55 medium tank is one of the most internationally prolific pieces of tracked armor. It is currently in use by over a dozen countries and has seen action in military incursions from the invasion of Hungary in 1956 to the Arab wars with Israel in the late Sixties and early Seventies.

Design[]

Visually identical to the older Soviet-made T-54, the T-55 is designed to be an improvement over its predecessor (which itself was designed to replace the iconic Second World War-era T-34 tank).

When it was first introduced for service in 1958, it was one of the most powerful tanks in the world, and prompted the development of the American M60A3 Patton.

Armament
The T-55 is armed with a 105 mm rifled gun that can load 70 rounds of armour-piercing (AP) or high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) shells; the T-55 carries 35 rounds worth of each type, respectively.

The gunner also has access to a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun which feeds from a single 500-round belt. It has no spare belts to reload from.

Features
The sole heavily armoured vehicle available to Nogovan guerilla fighters, the T-55 serves roughly in the same role as the American M60A3 and the Soviet T-72 Medium Tanks.

OFP-t55-05

Although its underpowered main gun renders it helpless against heavy tanks, T-55s work well as IFV destroyers.

Performance-wise however, the T-55 is more in-line with the M60A3 when it comes to both firepower and armour plating. Both possess the exact same primary armament (a 105 mm cannon) and have identical resistance to damage to anti-tank weapons.

The T-55's main advantage over the M60A3 is its lower turret profile, which makes it slightly easier to maintain a hull-down position.

Mobility
The T-55 has an inferior top speed compared to both the M60A3 and T-72. Handling-wise, it isn't that much better than the M60A3 and has poor mobility when climbing up steep hills.

Crew Capacity
The T-55 supports a crew of three, consisting of the driver, a gunner, and the commander. It is unable to transport any passengers.

Protection[]

The T-55 has 300 points worth of armour plating.

Armament[]

NOTE: For specifics on the Cannon 105 mm's munitions, see its related section listed here.

All weapon systems are controlled by the gunner position:

Cannon 105 mm[]

OFP-vehicleweapons-t55-cannon105mm

Rifled 105 mm gun. Can load either HE or AP-type munitions.

It can achieve a fire rate of ~ 7 rounds per minute and accuracy-wise, has a fixed dispersion of 0.002 rad regardless of range. There is no delay for swapping between munition types.

MG 7.62 mm[]

OFP-vehicleweapons-t55-mg762mm
Base damage value Initial velocity (m/s)
8 1,000

Coaxial 7.62 mm medium machine gun.

It can attain a fire rate of up to 600 RPM and has a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s. Accuracy-wise, it always has a fixed dispersion of 0.0007 rad regardless of distance.

Trivia[]

  • Cold War Assault T-55s are incorrectly depicted with using the same 105 mm cannon fitted onto M60A3 Pattons. In reality, all baseline variants of the T-55 have always been equipped with the D-10T 100 mm rifled gun.
  • The T-55 was not actually included as part of the default set of vehicles which could be used in Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (the initial release name of Cold War Assault), and was only added as part of the Resistance expansion pack for use by the Nogovan Partisans.

ArmA 2[]

The T-55 is used by both the Takistani Army and Takistani anti-government rebels in ArmA 2. It was added with the release of the Operation Arrowhead expansion pack.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Fire support
« T-55 tanks were the main battle tanks of the Soviet Union after they entered service in 1947. Estimated production numbers for the series range from 86,000 to 100,000, making them the most-produced tank in history.
The T-55 tanks are mechanically simple and robust. They are very simple to operate compared to Western tanks, and don't require a high level of training or education in their crewmembers.

This is a premium asset that requires ownership of the Operation Arrowhead expansion pack.

Returning in ArmA 2, the T-55 continues to serve as a lighter counterpart to the heavier T-72 tank.

Armament
It is now armed with a 100 mm rifled gun and has a coaxially-mounted 7.62 mm medium machine gun.

The standard loadout of the T-55 gives it 22 rounds of high-explosive (HE) and 21 rounds of high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) shells for the main gun. The coaxial SGMT on the other hand, is pre-loaded with one 250-round belt box and has a further four boxes in reserve.

Drawbacks
Obsolete and completely outdated by modern standards, the T-55 is essentially a museum piece on treads like the T-34.

Its gun optics lack the ability to toggle thermal vision, nor does it have an integrated laser rangefinder, which requires the gunner to manually estimate the distance of a target. Furthermore, it is also unable to conceal itself with smoke since it lacks the generators to do so.

Despite being classed as a Medium Tank, the T-55 is only lightly armoured and will not be able to confront other vehicles in its class directly. Even though they only utilise autocannons, Armoured Personnel Carriers like the LAV-25 or even the Stryker MGS tank destroyer will be able to easily take the T-55 head on with minimal, if any, losses due to their superior optics and longer ranged weapons.

Crew Capacity
The T-55 can transport a crew of three that consists of the driver, a gunner, and the commander. It is unable to carry any passengers.

Camouflage[]

  • Desert: Standard two-tone desert tan/olive green camouflage scheme. Used on Takistani Army-operated T-55s.
  • Olive: Flat olive green paint scheme. Only used by rebel T-55s.

Protection[]

The T-55 has a base armour value of 450.

Successful strikes to any of the following highlighted sections will inflict full damage to the component:

Arma2-t55-hitpoints

LEGEND
Green = Hull
Orange = Engine
Light blue = Treads
Maroon = Turret

Hull[]

The hull can take 382.5 points of damage.

Engine[]

The engine can resist 157.5 points of damage before failing. At least 20% of damage is shared with the T-55's main "health" pool.

A damaged engine will prevent the T-55 from attaining its top speed.

Treads[]

Both tracks can only survive 67.5 points of damage. Only 30% of damage is transferred onto the T-55's main "health" pool.

Turret[]

The turret can incur up to 450 points of damage.

Armament[]

NOTE: For specifics on the D-10's munitions, see its related section listed here.

The gunner position controls both the D-10 gun and SGMT machine gun. For optics, they can toggle between two fields of view:

D-10[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t55-d10

105 mm rifled gun. Can load two types of munitions.

It has a firing delay of 6 seconds in-between shots (10 RPM) but takes only 2 seconds to switch shell types. Beginning at 100 m, the D-10 can be zeroed up to a maximum range of 1000 m (rising in 100 m increments).

SGMT[]

Arma2-vehicleweapons-t55-pkt
Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
12 -0.00096 900

7.62 mm coaxial machine gun.

The SGMT can attain a fire rate of up to 800 RPM and has a muzzle velocity of 900 m/s. Accuracy-wise, it has a dispersion of 0.1 rad regardless of range. It takes 7 seconds to reload a fresh belt.

It has access to the same zeroing ranges as the D-10.

Trivia[]

  • Like its real-world counterpart, the main gun on ArmA 2's T-55 also has a restricted elevation and depression arc which prevents it from being able to aim low due to the turret's layout.
