The Fire Team is an infantry unit in ArmA: Mobile Ops.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • General-purpose infantry
« The basic infantry unit is versatile and useful against all types of structures. Soldiers will attack the nearest structure and they attack at close range. The Fire Team has low HP and small firepower but in greater numbers can overcome strong defences.
Office Description
»

Purpose[]

The most basic infantry squad that can be recruited, the Fire Team is always available initially at any Office regardless of level. They can also be placed into Pillboxes, which allows them to defend bases at the cost of being unable to be deploy into battles unless they dismount from the Pillbox.

Strengths[]

As the cheapest infantry unit to deploy that also has the highest number of team members (6 troops per squad), it can be easily massed up to overwhelm enemy bases with sheer numbers alone.

When further upgraded at the Comms Centre, they become even more efficient and can cut down walls and defences alike in a matter of seconds. Since they're extremely cheap, incurred losses can be quickly replaced at minimal cost after each battle.

Weaknesses[]

In terms of actual cost efficiency however, Fire Teams are quite poor as they have a short attack range (almost less than Engineer Teams) and will get cut down by any kind of defensive structure easily even when fully upgraded. Level 8 or greater Machine Guns for instance, can take on 2-3 Fire Teams with little damage suffered in return.

A Level 3 (or higher) Mortar in particular, can single-handedly wipe out four Fire Teams in two to three hits before they even get close enough to start firing on it. They are able to take out even more if the squads are clumped up due to the Mortar's splash damage. Likewise, Davy Crocketts and APERS Mines are quite lethal for Fire Teams as well.

Usage[]

Nonetheless, their decent DPS output means that they can still be deployed to complement the slower firing Tracked UGV. Wheeled UGVs can make use of their Take Cover ability to enhance their durability temporarily, long enough for nearby Fire Teams to close in on a defensive building or survive two blasts from an APERS Mine.

Since their Smoke Grenades can grant them a few seconds of "invulnerability" against certain defences (essentially), they also work best at helping to buy time for other slower infantry squads like the Heavy Team to get into position.

The Fire Team can obtain veterancy bonuses over time provided that the squad does not get annihilated in a battle. When fully buffed by these extra bonuses alongside upgrades at the Comms Centre, a single Fire Team can potentially gain up to a maximum of 500 HP which is double that of an un-upgraded Wheeled UGV, and more than any other max level infantry squad.

Abilities[]

Smoke Grenade[]

« The smoke grenade will cover the unit's approach and disable the defensive building targeting for 3 seconds.
Ability description
»

Once deployed, the target defensive structure will be unable to target any units temporarily for three seconds. During that time, it is rendered completely vulnerable to being attacked without being able to retaliate.

While not too effective even in mass numbers since the duration is quite short, smoke grenades work well against powerful but slow-firing defences like the Autocannon, as their long range means that they will always outrange the Fire Teams before they can get close enough.

It should be noted that the Smoke Grenade will not prevent a Mortar that's already launched a shell in the squad's direction from impacting their location.

Trivia[]

  • Prior to Update 1.14, Fire Teams did not possess the ability to throw Smoke Grenades.[1]
  • Promotional images and screenshots depict Fire Teams wielding uncustomised MX assault rifles from ArmA 3 that are furnished in black. However, in-game Fire Teams are shown using blue-painted rifles instead.
