The GAU-5A/A is a 5.56 mm carbine that remains unused by any faction in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.
Overview[]
- This section is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
The GAU-5A/A is an XM177 carbine designed specifically for use by the U.S. Air Force's aircrews as a self-defence weapon.
It primarily feeds from the same 18-round magazines used by the XM177/M16A1, and is also (optionally) capable of loading newer 28-round curved magazines as well as 36-round dual magazines. The GAU-5A/A has a muzzle velocity of 838 m/s[CfgWp 8] and can attain a fire rate of up to 600 rounds per minute on semi-auto[CfgWp 9][Formula 1] or 800 RPM on full auto.[CfgWp 10][Formula 2]
GAU-5A/As cannot be fitted with suppressors or bayonets. However, they do allow the user to mount riflescopes, first generation night vision sights, or an experimental unmagnified sight onto the carryhandle.[CfgWp 11] Lastly, the user also retains the ability to mount an M16-type bipod onto the barrel for added stability during fully automatic fire.[CfgWp 12]
Ironsights[]

Ironsights on the GAU-5A/A's carryhandle can be manually zeroed, though only two range settings are actually available (300 metres or 400 metres).[CfgWp 13] By default, it is set to a zeroing of 300 metres.[CfgWp 14]
If an optical sight that allows for manual zeroing greater than 400 metres is fitted, then the GAU-5A/A can be zeroed up to a maximum of 1,000 metres.[CfgWp 15] It should be noted that this also applies to zeroing under 300 metres.[note 1]
Melee[]
Melee attacks with the GAU-5A/A will involve striking targets with a buttstroke. Melee attacks can inflict a maximum of up to 7 points of damage to the target if the buttstroke lands successfully.[CfgAm 1]
It should be noted that melee attacks will drain 3.96 points of stamina[Formula 3] whenever a buttstroke is performed.[SCR 1]
Ammunition[]
NOTE: The GAU-5A/A is capable of loading the same magazines utilised by non-S.O.G. 5.56 mm-chambered weapons. To minimise clutter, they are deliberately excluded from this section.

The GAU-5A/A can load up to six types of magazines:[CfgWp 16]
- Two of these magazines are the standard 18-round box magazines.[note 6] They have a weight of 7 "mass" units.[CfgMa 5]
- Two magazines have a capacity of twenty-eight rounds.[note 7] These magazines have a weight of 9 "mass" units.[CfgMa 6]
- The remaining two magazines have a capacity of thirty-six rounds (they are simply two 18-round box magazines that have been taped together).[note 8] These magazines have a weight of 14 "mass" units.[CfgMa 7]
These magazines are compatible with the M16A1 assault rifle and XM177 carbines but cannot be shared with the M63A modular rifle:
20Rnd. M16 Mag[]

Standard 18-round box magazine loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 8] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 9]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 10] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 11]
20Rnd. M16 Mag (Tracer)[]

Alternate 18-round magazine loaded exclusively with 5.56 mm red tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 12] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 13]
All eighteen rounds of the magazine will emit visible red tracers when fired.[CfgMa 14][CfgMa 15]
30Rnd. M16 Mag[]

Newer 28-round curved magazine loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 16] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of thirty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 17]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 18] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 19]
30Rnd. M16 Mag (Tracer)[]

Alternate 28-round magazine loaded exclusively with 5.56 mm red tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 20] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of thirty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 21]
All twenty-eight rounds of the magazine will emit visible red tracers when fired.[CfgMa 22][CfgMa 23]
20Rnd. M16 Mag (Dual)[]

Unique 36-round "dual" magazine that has two 18-rounder box magazines taped together. Both magazines are loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 24] Two rounds have been removed from both magazines' intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring(s).[CfgMa 25]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 26] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 27]

NOTE: The following table includes magazines from the base game that can also be loaded into the GAU-5A/A whilst the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC is activated.
It should be noted that magazines from other Creator DLCs that share access to the same pool of magazines (Classname: STANAG_556x45) can also be loaded into the GAU-5A/A. However, those Creator DLCs must be loaded simultaneously alongside S.O.G. Prairie Fire in order for them to appear as selectable options in the Virtual Arsenal. |
Trivia[]
- The GAU-5A/A was not available as part of S.O.G.'s launch content and was only added after the release of Update 1.2.[1]

Notes[]
- ↑ Removing the optic will automatically reset the zeroing to either a minimum of 300 metres (if zeroing was set to under 200 metres or less) or a maximum of 400 metres (if the optic was utilising a zeroing setting of 500 or more metres).
- ↑ Only applies to the magazine itself. Even though the magazine has an initSpeed of 900 m/s, the GAU-5A/A's weapon class has its own initSpeed value defined (838 m/s) which always takes precedence over the magazine's initSpeed since the weapon's initSpeed value is not defined as a coefficient.
- ↑ This is the GAU-5A/A's actual muzzle velocity. The weapon class initSpeed value (838 m/s) takes precedence over the magazine initSpeed value (900 m/s).
- ↑ Damage will be reduced if the projectile's velocity drops below this value.
- ↑ This is the actual penetration depth of the GAU-5A/A's 5.56 mm ammunition. The weapon class initSpeed value (838 m/s) takes precedence over the magazine initSpeed value (900 m/s), affecting its penetration formula as a result.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of twenty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only eighteen rounds.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of thirty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only twenty-eight rounds.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of forty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only thirty-six rounds.
