Victor, we need to strike back. Get organised. We need weapons, obviously - but we need leadership, too. I know you've got experience of this kind of thing. I need you to be my second in command.
He knew the identity of Victor Troska, a former British special operations soldier who had successfully led the 1974 anti-Communist revolution on Nogova before he settled into retirement.[1][2]
The standing president of Nogova is soon executed by the Soviets[2], and the Vice Premier assumes control over the country as its puppet leader. Barely hours after the armed occupation began, former Nogovan military personnel, militiamen, and patriotic citizens from all across the island began to rise up against the Soviets.[5]
But for all their tenacity, their outdated weapons and bravery alone stood no chance against Soviet military might. Most of the militia and remaining fighters were uncoordinated and were easily wiped out by Soviet troops one by one. Those that remained rallied under Gabriel's partisan group, hoping to continue the fight under a united banner.[5][6]
«
There's only one man that can lead us, but - I don't think he will...
Gabriel makes his intent to draft Troska to lead the fighters known to his subordinates
»
Even so, Gabriel knew full well that they didn't have the numbers to challenge the Soviets and most importantly, he himself lacked the necessary battlefield knowledge to lead so many. Only one man on Nogova could possibly fill that role, and he knew where exactly that man lived.[6]
Under the cover of darkness, Gabriel and his aide-de-camp Geronimo made their way towards the man's home. They find him standing outside, and when he calls out to them to identify themselves, Gabriel shows his face to the man who turns out to be Victor Troska, an old acquaintance.[1][2]
«
Troska: Gabe, you're talking about starting a war. There's no way you're equipped to take on these guys. Gabriel: You're right. A war. But what else can we do? Watch them steal our country? We must fight, and if we're to win then everyone must fight with us. Everyone!
Gabriel attempts to convince Troska to join the Partisans
»
Gabriel pleads to Troska to join them but Troska, having become jaded over the years in light of the bloody 1974 revolution, refuses to accept Gabriel's offer. He tells him and Geronimo to lay down their weapons and go home. Having been adamantly declined by Troska[2], a dejected Gabriel tells Troska of where the guerillas were and that he'd be welcome to join them at any time. He then made his way back to the camp, unsure of what do now that that their only real hope at reclaiming freedom had been dashed completely.[7]
Death[]
The following morning however, a man begins to walk directly into the heart of the camp. To Gabriel's surprise, the man was none other than Troska himself.[8] Troska explained that he had defied orders from the Soviets to give away the partisans, and that he had already killed several of them in self-defence.[1][9]
Gabriel immediately began to discuss the overall situation on the island to Troska, explaining that the Soviets had grown impatient with the partisan group's ineffective attacks, and were retaliating by torturing civilians for information on the location of organisation's camp.[9] He also tells Troska of the identity of a radio contact, who provided the partisans with much information regarding Soviet troop movements.[10]
He restates his offer to Troska to join them officially now that he had no way of turning back. Troska still refuses to accept his offer, however, and insists on staying in an advisory role with the guerilla fighters.[11] Before Gabriel could discuss his plans with Troska any further, he is suddenly shot by Soviet snipers and is instantly killed.[12][13] His death finally motivates Troska to take charge of the inexperienced fighters, and to once again step foot into war.[1][14]
Personality and Appearance[]
Gabriel was a young Nogovan with a tanned complexion, a medium-bearded face, and had short black hair. He always donned camouflaged fatigues and wore an olive green chest rig as well, along with a camouflaged booniehat.
Knowing full well that he lacked the necessary experience to wage guerilla warfare effectively, Gabriel placed his faith in Troska's experience[2], never wavering in his beliefs even to the end.[11] He was also incredibly trusting of others, and quickly accepted information provided by Tasmanian Devil despite not even being aware of his real identity.[10]

You've been in a war before, haven't you? TROSKA: More than once. And that's why I can't stand any more. Do you have any idea what this means, a war? Do you know how many people will suffer? Didn't you hear the president? This will only lead to uneccessary bloodshed... GABRIEL: The President has been executed. TROSKA: You see? You can't win! They have tanks and you've got, what? GERONIMO: Determination... GABRIEL: Hold on, Victor. That's why we're here. You fought against the Soviets. You know how to deal with them. Maybe we're not going to win, but at least we can make a stand. TROSKA: You have no idea what you're saying! No idea what damage you're about to do. If you don't lay down your weapons immediately, the Soviets will just fight harder and harder against us. They'll start on innocent people, burning and murdering. You have nothing but a few foolish men; you don't have training, weapons, anything. GABRIEL: That's why we've come to you, for help. TROSKA: No. I can't. I won't. Josef Patocka has the latest. PATOCKA: Citizens. Today, August 21st, the National Coalition has finally collapsed. Vice-premier Ostrovsky of the Nogova Communist party has resigned, and asked the entire government to follow his lead. He claimed that representatives of the Socialist Reform party were trying to establish a capitalist regime of corruption and unemployment, and urged revision and rejection of the last three years' economic reforms. All Communist ministers followed the Vice-premier's example and left the government. They also requested the resignation of pro-reform president Novak. Former Vice-premier Ostrovsky and three other leading members of Nogova communist party then went to Moscow to meet with the General Secretary of the Soviet Communist party, Leonid Brezhnev. The purpose of their trip remains unknown. We'll keep you posted with latest news. Stay with us. NEWSREADER: Thanks, Josef. And now back to the music."

Please hold on for message from President Novak. NOVAK: Dear fellow citizens. Our country is at a cross roads. The Communist party leaders have turned their backs on our consitution and all the principles of our democracy. They have betrayed our nation to the Communist leaders of the Soviet Union. A large number of Soviet troops from Kolguyev have landed on our island. We can't stop them – our militia forces are ineffective. Accordingly, I have ordered all our units to surrender and lay down their weapons. I ask you all not to provoke the Soviet soldiers, to avoid uneccessary violence. Return to your homes and, for your own security, remain there. I have requested the international community to take action against this occupation, this act of unprecedented aggresion against our sovereign state. Dear fellow citizens, help each other in this testing time for our nation. The truth will win out."

Quick, clean, and easy. They didn't expect resistane. But the people of Nogova were willing to take up arms, in equally righteous desperation. The army was supposed to dissolve itself; however, many soldiers held fast and fought against the invasion, with all the spirit and courage they could muster. But courage was not enough. People were dying all around me – and I was sitting quietly in my living room. Not fighting. Just thinking. I'd returned home to this island in search of peace, after so much fighting; so much bloodshed. I'd tried to hide, but war had found me once again."
