« Lt. David Armstrong leads important supply convoy to Malden's airport.
Mission Description
»

Guardian is the twenty-fourth mission of ArmA: Cold War Assault's Cold War Crisis campaign.

Diary[]

« June 19, 1985 - Back to La Pessagne. Maybe I’ve been on this island too long – but it actually feels pretty good to be in a familiar place, without the pressure of an oncoming enemy attack.

So of course, we’re about to move out. Word came round last night that the move on Everon is definitely going ahead. We’ve packed our bags – but there’s one more mission for my unit before we leave.

There’s a crucial ammunition convoy heading for the airport, and we’ll be riding shotgun. I’ve been given free reign to take any vehicles I think I need from around here. There are certainly a few remaining Russian troops out there somewhere – and they’re sure to have a go at these tucks, to weaken our Everon offensive.

This should be quite straightforward. If there are any Reds out there, I bet they’re too busy hiding to mount any kind of assault. But Command was worried enough to run through the route with me several times. I guess that ammo’s pretty important...

Overview[]

The player controls U.S. Army infantryman Lieutenant David Armstrong. The Soviets have been mostly repelled from Malden with only a few holdouts remaining. However, scattered groups continue to prowl the western and central sides of the island.

While few in number, they have repeatedly struck numerous supply convoys and delayed NATO preparations for the upcoming counterinvasion of Everon. Lt. Armstrong must escort one of the convoys and ensure that it reaches the main airbase north-east of La Trinité safely.

Armstrong's role/class:

  • Infantry / Officer

Route A (Northern)[]

Objectives[]

Primary[]

  • (1) When you radio the convoy with the order to move, it will set off for this crossroads. Upon arrival it will stop and await further instructions
  • (2) If you choose the Northern route, the convoy will reach another crossroads and, again, await your orders
  • (3) Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport

Optional[]

N/A

Mandatory[]

  • Armstrong must survive
  • The entire convoy must not be destroyed
  • At least half of the trucks must reach the airport
  • Avoid collateral damage/friendly fire (point score must not drop below 601)
  • Remain within the combat area

Walkthrough[]

Primary 1: When you radio the convoy with the order to move, it will set off for this crossroads. Upon arrival it will stop and await further instructions[]

The convoy will arrive at La Pessagne shortly after the mission starts. Get into the truck or APC parked in front of you and begin driving along the road towards the airport.

Come to a halt at around Cj49. You have a 50%-70% chance of encountering a team of three machinegunners who will be hiding behind the trees inside the forest ahead of you (next to the small hut). Get rid of them quickly, then tell the convoy to proceed again until you reach De49 (just short of the crossroads). Scan the north and check to see if there are two riflemen hiding behind trees (they have an 80% chance of spawning).

Primary 2: If you choose the Northern route, the convoy will reach another crossroads and, again, await your orders[]

Order the convoy to proceed north once it reaches the first set of crossroads.

At around Dh46, stop again and move forward by yourself. A team of Soviets will patrol through this region and can potentially consist of anywhere from two to five soldiers (aside from the squad leader, each soldier has a 60-80% chance of spawning). Kill them quickly, then move up again once the coast is clear.

At Dh35, stop once more and scan all directions at the crossroads. A four man team will be running around and may occasionally stop in the middle of the crossroads itself. Get rid of them, then tell the convoy to keep pushing north (do not tell them to go through Larche). However, tell the convoy to stop immediately after directing them to go north as there's an 80% chance for a rifleman and a machinegunner to spawn on the road. Scout ahead first and eliminate the threats if they're there before proceeding.

When you pass Dj29, stop again in the middle of the forest and look for a potential three-man team of Soviets. They have a 70-80% chance of spawning and will once again be hiding behind trees. Continue forward until Ed26 and you should spot a five-man team standing in the middle of the road. Be especially careful of this group as there's a 40% chance that an anti-tank soldier will spawn.

Do not tell the convoy to proceed even after this group has been eliminated. There is a BMP at Eh27 whose crew will make short work of both your squad and the convoy. Get out of the truck/APC and proceed on foot with your LAW-wielding subordinate tagging along. Move slowly and keep scanning the east with your binoculars until you spot the BMP. Either destroy it yourself (if you brought along an M72) or order your subordinate to attack it with his launcher. Once the BMP becomes scrap metal, move up to Ei27 and come to a stop.

A large squad of Soviets may spawn and stand guard at Fb27. Eliminate them all quickly, then give the all-clear to the convoy to move up. There will be no further opposition until you reach the outskirts of the airport; one last enemy squad may attempt to ambush you at around Fi28 (between 81%-91% chance of spawning). Dismount pre-emptively and scan the northern ridgeline for their whereabouts quickly.

Primary 3: Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport[]

The mission will end once the convoy arrives safely at the airport (with at least half of the trucks intact).

Route B (Southern)[]

Objectives[]

Primary[]

  • (1) When you radio the convoy with the order to move, it will set off for this crossroads. Upon arrival it will stop and await further instructions
  • (2) Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport

Order the convoy to proceed east once it reaches the first set of crossroads. There are no threats from here on out until you reach Arudy. A team of Soviets may attack from the south-west and can consist of anywhere between two to five soldiers (they have a 30%-80% chance of spawning). Once they're cleared, order the convoy to move up until you reach Ef44. The forest up ahead has a total of seven Soviets standing by. Depending on your playthrough, you may encounter less or none at all as each of these ambushers have a 50% chance of spawning.

No matter the outcome, order the convoy to move up to Dourdan and then north. However, do not proceed any further once you reach Dourdan as there is a fireteam and T-72 waiting to ambush you at Ff41. A group of allies will be supporting you so let them take the lead. Make sure that either you or your AT-armed subordinates are ready to tackle the tank.

When all threats are eliminated, give the convoy the green-light and keep moving up until you reach the outskirts of the airport at Fi28. One last squad of Soviets may spawn and attack you here. Scan the northern ridge and tell the convoy to move up only when it's clear to proceed.

Primary 2: Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport[]

Wait for the convoy to arrive at the airport. The mission will end as soon as the trucks arrive safely.

Route C (Central)[]

  • (2) Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport

At Dh35, stop once more and scan all directions at the crossroads. A four man team will be running around and may occasionally stop in the middle of the crossroads itself. Get rid of them, then tell the convoy to proceed east through Larche. At around Eb32 (where the road bends), come a halt and scan the road further down east. There will potentially be a five-man team of Soviets waiting to ambush you at Ed32. Eliminate them, then move forward until you reach the outskirts of the village at Ee32. Make sure the convoy has grinded to a halt here!

Larche is garrisoned by a full eight/nine-man squad of Soviets who are hiding inside and near the houses. You need to proceed carefully here; try to snipe the ones standing outside first before moving in slowly and clearing each street one by one. Do not rush. Take your time and remember to avoid getting yourself suppressed by the machinegunners.

Once the convoy has passed through Larche safely, you'll run into no further opposition until you reach Fi28. One final squad of enemies may attempt to ambush you here. Dismount early and check the northern side to spot them as quickly as possible. Get rid of them, then tell the convoy drivers to proceed into the airport.

Primary 2: Report in with your unit to the officer at the airport[]

The mission will end once the convoy arrives intact at the airport. Don't forget that at least half of the convoy has to make it for a successful completion of the mission.

Tips[]

  • You may need to order the convoy to move and stop repeatedly if the lead vehicle driver gets blocked by something, whether that be a tree or a house.
  • The southern route is by far the best route to take as it has minimal resistance compared to the other two paths. The only significant threat is the T-72 but it's relatively easy to deal with thanks to your allies.
  • The M21 is a decent option as you can pre-emptively snipe ambushers from afar without having to deal with the M16A2's cumbersome ironsights.
    • Equipping the M72 is also a good idea as it'll allow you to tackle enemy armour without having to rely on your AI subordinates to do it for you. Don't bother bringing grenades - they're useless for this mission...unless you're that enthusiastic about throwing grenades.
  • It is not necessary to do the mission with the Truck 5T. The M113 may be a better choice depending on your personal preference.

Trivia[]

  • Upon release, the events of Guardian were initially stated to have taken place on June 19th (a date which is still shown in-game). However, this was later retconned to a date of June 18th by the official Armaverse Timeline.[1]
  • In Operation Flashpoint: Elite, a ported version of Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (Cold War Assault's former title) made specifically for the XBOX console, the M113 APC is replaced with an M2A2 Bradley IFV.
