The HMS Proteus is a submarine used by CTRG operatives in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

  • Role:
    • Mobile command centre

Design[]

The Proteus is a nuclear-powered Astute-class attack submarine. It is utilised by NATO's multi-national black ops unit, the Combat Technology Research Group (CTRG), as their mobile command centre for stealthily inserting and extracting assets.[1]

NOTE: The HMS Proteus is a static in-game object that can be positioned at any location on a terrain via the Eden editor, but cannot be 'driven' like a true submarine.

Trivia[]

  • The Proteus is modelled after the real-world "Astute" class series of fleet submarines developed by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy.
  • Images of the Proteus in ArmA 3 could be seen in early promotional media materials released in 2011[2][3], though it remained unclear at the time whether the Proteus was intended to be a partially functional vessel akin to the USS Liberty or was merely a static prop.
    • It was also not available as a placeable in-game object until the release of the campaign's third episode.[4]
  • It was originally implied in the alternate, non-canon ending for The East Wind campaign that Captain Scott Miller's CTRG team essentially use the Proteus as a mobile command centre.[5][6] This was later confirmed in the Old Man mini-campaign, which shows Miller's team extracting out of the country via the Proteus.[1]
  • The Proteus marks the first appearance of a submarine in the entire series (albeit as a static and non-functional object only).
  • In the alternate, non-canonical ending to Tac-Ops' Steel Pegasus mini-campaign (Final Strike), it is briefly revealed that the HMS Proteus is commanded by a British Royal Navy Captain by the name of "McGinnis".[7] However, this information is never revealed outside of the alternate ending, leaving its canonicity in question.
