« The Igla (in English: Needle) is a Russian, man-portable infrared homing surface-to-air missile weapon. This weapon is designated as "SA-18" in the US and its NATO reporting name is "Grouse."
The Igla uses 9M39 missiles. This weapon is highly valued for its resistance to countermeasures. Because of its easy availability on the black market it has often been used in terrorist attacks on civilian aircraft over last 30 years, mostly in Africa. The pod is a support device with three legs, which heavily reduces the supersonic wave drag.

The Igla AA Pod is an anti-aircraft turret used by both the Russian Armed Forces and Takistani Army in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

The Igla AA Pod is a defensive, surface-to-air missile turret that launches infrared-guided missiles.

It is designed to launch Igla missiles at a rate of one every four seconds (15 missiles per minute). Each launcher comes pre-loaded with two missiles carries a further nine reloads (combined for a total of twenty individual missiles).

The Igla's 72 mm missiles are fitted with high-explosive fragmentation (HE-Frag) warheads, and are capable of hitting target at ranges of up to 5,200 metres away.

A static version of the handheld 9K38 SAM, the Igla AA Pod simply combines two handheld launchers and mounts them onto a tripod with a seat attached in-between.

Like its shoulder-launched counterpart, the static version launches the same missiles and is far superior to its American counterpart in every way, from lock-on range to missile aerodynamics, even right down to seeker resistance against flare countermeasures.

The only drawback to the Igla AA Pod stems from its increased reloading time. The American Stinger takes a mere 5 seconds to rearm both launchers after they're depleted. The Igla on the other hand, will require up to 30 seconds to fully rearm both launchers.

While its high performance and greater range do compensate for this increased reloading time, it does leave the turret's gunner vulnerable for longer periods of time in-between engagements.

Munitions[]

The pod's twin launchers are only capable of firing one type of missile:

Damage type Base damage value
High-Explosive 70

Igla missiles take 1.5 seconds to reach a top speed of 800 m/s. The warheads utilise a high-explosive (HE) payload with a blast radius of 8 metres. Its seeker has a 20% chance of losing lock to countermeasures.

Trivia[]

  • The Igla AA Pod is directly based on a real-world configuration of the 9K38 launcher called the "Djigit".
    • However, the twin launchers for the in-game Djigit are not actually modelled after the 9K38 but are based on the older 9K32 Strela instead. Whether this was a mistake or was a case of development oversight is not known.
  • Like the American Stinger, the Igla AA Pod is the first of the two missile-based static AA turrets in the entire series.
