Lolisse is a settlement located on the island of Malden.

Overview[]

Lolisse lies on the northwesternmost tip of Malden, west of the mini desert that stretches across the island's northern coastline.[1] Only a single paved road leads directly to the village. Another trail in the north leads down the slope to the coast with a small T-shaped harbour.

History[]

At the height of the Malden Islands Crisis, Lolisse was forcibly occupied by troops under the command of rogue Soviet leader General Aleksei Guba.[2] It would stay under the control of Guba's troops until June 6th, 1985, when U.S.-led NATO forces succeeded in liberating the village.[3][4]

Sometime in the early 2020s, a series of unfortunate accidents following the U.S. military's mismanaged and hasty withdrawal from Malden would result in the complete destruction of the nearby research base.[5]

More than a decade on, remnants of the former U.S. military base still lie abandoned (2035)

Several Maldenian contractors who worked there were killed as a result of the accident.[6] The incident at Lolisse - coupled with accidents elsewhere on the island caused by the U.S. military's incompetent handling of Cold War-era munitions stockpiles, would lead to a drastic fallout in relations between the two (former) allies.[5]

As the last of the Americans departed from the island, the people of Malden turned to the East and would soon welcome the arrival of military forces from the Chinese-led CSAT alliance.[5][7]

Abandoned military research base[]

Located south-east of the village at grid coordinates 060-107, this former research base was built by the U.S. military after the end of the Cold War.[6]

As of July 24th, 2035, it continues to lie abandoned and has not been fully dismantled. Rusted wrecks of destroyed tanks and other vehicles still litter the facility grounds, alongside the dilapidated remains of the five geodesic domes and supporting portable structures.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike most locations in Cold War Assault, Lolisse is not marked on the in-game map and is only named as such in the main campaign and on the official ARMA X: Anniversary Edition's map of Malden.[1]
  • In ArmA 3's iteration of the Malden terrain, various props around the abandoned research base (as well as the base structures themselves) appear to be a reference to Mobile Ops. Examples include the destroyed anti-aircraft guns being based on the AA Tower or the geodesic domes resembling the Comms Centre building.

Our former base, here, to the north of the main airport, is now a major concern. China's got a squadron of long-range aircraft there. Shikras. Brass tacks: we need air superiority over the Gibraltar Straits - if we don't have that, we can't invade Altis and Stratis."

The invasion simply cannot fail."
