The M16A1 is a 5.56 mm assault rifle used by several BLUFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.
Overview[]
- This article is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
The M16A1 is a gas operated, selective-fire assault rifle chambered to fire the latest 5.56×45 mm round.
It primarily loads from 20-round box magazines but can also (optionally) load newer 30-round curved magazines. To prevent feeding issues caused by the spring, two rounds from all of the M16's magazines are deliberately omitted, providing an actual capacity of only eighteen[CfgMa 1], twenty-eight[CfgMa 2], or thirty-six[CfgMa 3] rounds depending on the type of magazine loaded.
M16A1s have a muzzle velocity of 975 m/s[CfgWp 8] and can attain fire rates of up to 600 rounds per minute on semi-auto[CfgWp 9][Formula 1] or 800 RPM when firing on full auto.[CfgWp 10][Formula 2] The carryhandle supports the mounting of magnified riflescopes, experimental collimator sights, and first generation night vision sights.[CfgWp 11] Bayonets can be affixed onto the lug beneath the barrel[CfgWp 12], while an M16-type bipod can also be attached onto the barrel for added stability.[CfgWp 13]
Lastly, a sound suppressor, specifically designed for use on M16s, may also be fitted onto the muzzle. Doing so will prevent the use of a bayonet unless the suppressor is detached, however.[CfgWp 14]
Variants[]
M16A1 (M203)[]
« | M16A1 5.56mm Assault Rifle, SF/SOG version fitted with M203 40mm Grenade Launcher Weapon Description
|
» |

This variant is fitted with the new M203 underbarrel grenade launcher. The handguard is also replaced with a unique heatshield.
The M203 is designed to load and fire a variety of 40 mm grenade rounds, ranging from lethal high-explosive (HE) rounds, harmless smoke shells, and less-than-lethal (LTL) flares.[CfgWp 23][CfgWp 24] It features a leaf sight that can be zeroed up to a maximum of 300 metres.[CfgWp 25]
Compared to the baseline M16A1 rifle, the M203-fitted model is significantly heavier to wield (a 40% increase in "mass")[CfgWp 15] and also imposes a noticeable penalty to the user's movement and inertia in close quarters (0.6 versus the M16A1's 0.4).[CfgWp 21] Additionally, this variant does not support the mounting of any of the M16A1's accessories; no optical sights, suppressors, bayonets or its bipod may be attached onto the rifle.
M16A1 (XM148)[]
« | M16A1 5.56mm Assault Rifle with XM148 single-shot 40mm grenade-launcher attached under the barrel, and camo tape Weapon Description
|
» |

This variant is fitted with the older prototype XM148 underbarrel grenade launcher. It is also capable of launching the same variety of 40 mm HE, smoke, and flare grenade rounds.[CfgWp 34][CfgWp 35]
It is essentially a heavier version of the M203-fitted M16A1 (by 10 "mass" units, an increase of 8%).[CfgWp 26] However unlike its M203 counterpart, the XM148 lacks a dedicated leaf/ladder sight. Instead, the user will "aim" with the M16A1's front sight, which can be "zeroed" up to a maximum of 300 metres.[CfgWp 36]
It should be noted that just like M203-fitted M16A1s, this variant's XM148 launcher prevents the attachment of any accessories. No bayonets, bipods, optical sights or suppressors can be fitted onto the rifle.
XM16E1[]
« | XM16E1 5.56mm Assault Rifle. Early version. 20-round mag Weapon Description
|
» |

The XM16E1 prototype is an early predecessor of the M16A1 rifle. It is primarily used by the MACV's CIDG paramilitary teams, though South Korean and South Vietnamese Marines also utilise the rifle.
For all intents and purposes, the XM16E1 is completely identical to the M16A1 when it comes to both function and handling. It supports having optics attached onto the carryhandle[CfgWp 44], a suppressor or bayonet (not both at the same time)[CfgWp 45][CfgWp 46], as well as an M16-type bipod.[CfgWp 47]
The main difference is that the XM16E1 uses a 3-prong muzzle brake as opposed to the M16A1's birdcage design, though this is purely cosmetic and bears no actual gameplay effect upon the XM16E1.
XM16E1 (XM148)[]

This variant is simply an XM16E1 rifle that has been fitted with the older XM148 prototype UGL. By default, it is not utilised by any of the main factions.
It can load and fire a mix of lethal, LTL, and non-lethal 40 mm UGL rounds.[CfgWp 56][CfgWp 57] The launcher lacks a dedicated sight of its own and relies on the XM16E1's front sight to "aim" with, which can be "zeroed" up to a maximum of 300 metres.[CfgWp 58]
Like other derivatives of the M16 that are fitted with grenade launchers, the XM148-fitted XM16E1 does not allow the user to attach accessories onto the weapon (optical sights, suppressors, bipods, bayonets). In every other aspect, it is essentially identical to the M16A1, the main exception being the XM16E1's obvious cosmetic differences, as well as being slightly lighter by 10 "mass" units compared to the XM148-fitted M16A1.[CfgWp 48]
M16 USAF[]
« | M16 5.56mm Assault Rifle. USAF version. 20-round mag Weapon Description
|
» |

The M16 USAF variant is the earliest model out of all the M16A1's derivatives. It is not utilised by any of the main factions.
Just like the XM16E1, there is no actual difference in performance or handling compared to the standard-issue M16A1. It allows for various optical sights to be attached onto the carryhandle[CfgWp 66], the mounting of an M16-type bipod[CfgWp 67], a 5.56 mm sound suppressor[CfgWp 68], and a bayonet[CfgWp 69] (though not at the same time with a suppressor).
Appearance-wise, it uses the same 3-prong muzzle brake but lacks the forward assist on the M16A1 and later models. However, these changes are purely cosmetic and do not actually affect its functionality in regular gameplay.
Sights[]
M16 variants[]

If an optical sight that allows for manual zeroing greater than 400 metres is fitted, then the M16A1 can be zeroed up to a maximum of 1,000 metres.[CfgWp 72] It should be noted that this also applies to zeroing under 300 metres.[note 1]

If an optical sight that allows for manual zeroing greater than 400 metres is fitted, then the XM16E1 can be zeroed up to a maximum of 1,000 metres.[CfgWp 79] It should be noted that this also applies to zeroing under 300 metres.[note 1]

If an optical sight that allows for manual zeroing greater than 400 metres is fitted, then the M16 USAF can be zeroed up to a maximum of 1,000 metres.[CfgWp 84] It should be noted that this also applies to zeroing under 300 metres.[note 1]
Grenade launchers[]

Camouflage[]
- Black: Standard black/dark grey finish.
- Camo:* Jungle stripe camouflage pattern.
(*) Not available to the XM16E1, XM16E1 (XM148), and M16 USAF variants.[note 2]
Melee[]
Without a bayonet affixed, the user will strike targets with a buttstroke instead. This applies to all variants of the M16 rifle. Melee attacks can inflict a maximum of up to 7 points of damage to the target if the buttstroke lands successfully.[CfgAm 1] Bayonet stabs on the other hand, deal a total of 10.5 points of damage instead.[CfgAm 2]
Note that melee attacks cost stamina and will drain the following amounts whenever a buttstroke (or bayonet stab) is performed:[SCR 1]
Variant | Weapon "mass" / dexterity values | Stamina cost |

All variants of the M16 family can load up to six types of magazines:[CfgWp 88][CfgWp 89][CfgWp 90]
- Two of these magazines are the standard 18-round box magazines.[note 7] They have a weight of 7 "mass" units.[CfgMa 6]
- Two magazines have a capacity of twenty-eight rounds.[note 8] These magazines have a weight of 9 "mass" units.[CfgMa 7]
- The remaining two magazines have a capacity of thirty-six rounds (they are simply two 18-round box magazines that have been taped together).[note 9] These magazines have a weight of 14 "mass" units.[CfgMa 8]
No matter the variant, all M16s are capable of loading up to six types of magazines. They are interchangeable with XM177 and GAU-5A/A carbines but are not compatible with the M63A:
20Rnd. M16 Mag[]

Standard 18-round box magazine loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 9] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 10]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 11] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 12]
20Rnd. M16 Mag (Tracer)[]

Alternate 18-round magazine loaded exclusively with 5.56 mm red tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 13] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 14]
All eighteen rounds of the magazine will emit visible red tracers when fired.[CfgMa 15][CfgMa 16]
30Rnd. M16 Mag[]

Newer 28-round curved magazine loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 17] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of thirty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 18]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 19] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 20]
30Rnd. M16 Mag (Tracer)[]

Alternate 28-round magazine loaded exclusively with 5.56 mm red tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 21] Two rounds have been removed from the magazine's intended capacity of thirty to protect the spring.[CfgMa 22]
All twenty-eight rounds of the magazine will emit visible red tracers when fired.[CfgMa 23][CfgMa 24]
20Rnd. M16 Mag (Dual)[]

Unique 36-round "dual" magazine that has two 18-rounder box magazines taped together. Both magazines are loaded with a mix of 5.56 mm ball and tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 25] Two rounds have been removed from both magazines' intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring(s).[CfgMa 26]
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible red tracer.[CfgMa 27] The last four rounds of the magazine will always emit visible tracers.[CfgMa 28]
20Rnd. M16 Mag (Tracer/Dual)[]

Alternate 36-round "dual" magazine loaded exclusively with 5.56 mm red tracer ammunition.[CfgMa 29] Two rounds have been removed from both magazines' intended capacity of twenty to protect the spring(s).[CfgMa 30]
All thirty-six rounds will emit visible red tracers when fired.[CfgMa 31][CfgMa 32]

NOTE: The following table includes magazines from the base game that can also be loaded into M16s whilst the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC is activated.
It should be noted that magazines from other Creator DLCs that share access to the same pool of magazines (Classname: STANAG_556x45) can also be loaded into M16s. However, those Creator DLCs must be loaded simultaneously alongside S.O.G. Prairie Fire in order for them to appear as selectable options in the Virtual Arsenal. |
Trivia[]
- Prior to Update 1.2, only one configuration of the M16 and its XM148-fitted sub-variant were available as part of the DLC's launch content (and were both generically designated as the M16).[1] The patch subsequently renamed the baseline M16 variants[2] whilst also adding the XM16E1, USAF, and A1 models.[3]
- It is the first weapon platform in the series to feature more than one type of UGL in the form of both the M203 and the XM148 (albeit only in a semi-official capacity). No other weapon prior to S.O.G.'s M16A1 featured two unique grenade launchers as attachments.

Notes[]
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 1.2 Removing the optic will automatically reset the zeroing to either a minimum of 300 metres (if zeroing was set to under 200 metres or less) or a maximum of 400 metres (if the optic was utilising a zeroing setting of 500 or more metres).
- ↑ Only the M16A1 (XM148) variant specifically uses a mix of both camouflage schemes.
- ↑ Only applies to the magazine itself. Even though the magazine has an initSpeed of 900 m/s, the weapon classes for each variant of the M16 have their own initSpeed value defined (975 m/s) which always take precedence over the magazine's initSpeed value (the weapon's initSpeed value is not defined as a coefficient).
- ↑ This is the actual muzzle velocity of all M16 variants. The weapon class initSpeed value (975 m/s) takes precedence over the magazine initSpeed value (900 m/s).
- ↑ Damage will be reduced if the projectile's velocity drops below this value.
- ↑ This is the actual penetration depth of 5.56 mm ammunition fired by all M16 variants. The weapon class initSpeed values (975 m/s) take precedence over the magazine initSpeed value (900 m/s), affecting its penetration formula as a result.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of twenty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only eighteen rounds.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of thirty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only twenty-eight rounds.
- ↑ This magazine technically has a capacity of forty rounds (and is even named as such) but is actually configured to store only thirty-six rounds.
