NOTE: This article is about multi-faction M1 Garands in S.O.G. Prairie Fire. For the M1 Garand used by American/French forces in Spearhead 1944, see M1 Garand (Spearhead). |
« | The M1 Garand is a 7.62x63mm calibre semi-automatic rifle used by ARVN and CIDG troops early in the Vietnam War. It is fed by a clip of 8 rounds and can fire rifle grenades using the M7 grenade launcher. It can be fitted with an M5 bayonet and an M1C 4x scope. It was the standard U.S. service rifle during World War II and the Korean War. Field Manual

The M1 Garand is a 7.62 mm rifle used by several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.
Overview[]
- This section is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
The M1 Garand is a self-loading semi-automatic rifle that is chambered to fire the 7.62×63 mm cartridge.
It feeds exclusively from 8-round en bloc clips, and can attain a fire rate of up to 600 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 853 m/s.
M1s can be fitted with a riflescope that has a fixed magnification of 2.2x zoom (this scope is shareable with M1 Carbines). In addition, the M1 can be customised with a camouflage wrap to conceal the barrel and stock and can also mount a bayonet for improved melee attacks. It does not support being fitted with suppressors or bipods, however.
Variants[]
M1 Garand (Rifle Grenade)[]

The Rifle Grenade variant is fitted with a muzzle adapter that is capable of firing 22 mm rifle grenade rounds. Unlike the baseline rifle, it is exclusive to the MACV's U.S. Marines, the RLA, and the South Korean Army/Marines.
The muzzle adapter does not come with a dedicated leaf sight. "Aiming" can only be accomplished through the M1's front sight. If needed, the adapter can be "zeroed" between three fixed ranges of 50 metres, 100 metres, and 175 metres.
It should be noted that this variant does not allow for bayonets, camouflage wraps, and optical sights to be fitted onto the rifle.
Sights[]

It is not possible to exceed a maximum zeroing of 500 metres even if its 2.2x riflescope is attached.[note 1]

Manual zeroing is still possible, however. It can be adjusted between three fixed range settings of either 50 metres, 100 metres or 175 metres. By default, the front sight is set to a zeroing of 50 metres.
Melee[]
Without a bayonet mounted, the user will strike targets with a buttstroke instead. This applies to both variants of the M1 Garand, with melee attacks inflicting up to 7 points of damage should the buttstroke connect successfully.
Note that melee attacks cost stamina and will drain the following amounts whenever a buttstroke (or bayonet stab) is performed:[note 2]
Variant | Weapon "mass" / dexterity values | Stamina cost |
---|---|---|
M1 Garand | 100 / 1.7 | 6.8 |
M1 Garand (Rifle Grenade) | 120 / 1.7 | 8.16 |
Ammunition[]
NOTE: Figures for less-than-lethal/non-lethal smoke, illumination and riot dispersal gas grenade munitions are deliberately excluded from this section.
Round name | Base damage value | Aerodynamic friction | Initial velocity (m/s) | Penetration depth (mm) |
---|---|---|---|---|
7.62×63 mm | 11 | -0.0009324 | 853 | 12.795 |
M1A2 22 mm FRAG | 80 | -0.001 | 65 | N/A |
M17 22 mm FRAG | 80 | -0.001 | 65 | N/A |
M9 22 mm HEAT | 200 | -0.001 | 65 | N/A |
M19 22 mm WP | 19 | -0.001 | 100 | N/A |
The M1 Garand is limited to loading only two types of "magazines". Rifle grenade rounds can only be loaded if the muzzle adapter is attached. They can be of either the explosive, less-than-lethal (LTL), or non-lethal variety depending on the grenade's filling:
8Rnd. M1 Garand Clip[]

Standard-issue 8-round en bloc clip. It has a weight of 8 "mass" units.
None of the rounds fired will emit visible tracers.
8Rnd. M1 Garand Clip (Tracer)[]

Dedicated tracer clip. All eight rounds of the clip comprise exclusively of visible tracer rounds.
It weighs the same as the standard-issue 8-round clips.
M1A2 22 mm FRAG[]

22 mm rifle grenade fitted with a fragmentation-based warhead. It has a weight of 8 "mass" units.
It utilises a timed fuse that will detonate 4.7 seconds after being launched. The warhead has a minimum fuse distance of 6 metres and a blast radius of 8 metres.
M17 22 mm FRAG[]

22 mm rifle grenade that uses a fragmentation warhead. It has a weight of 8 "mass" units.
Statistically, the M17 remains unchanged from the M1A2 and shares the same blast radius and minimum fuse range. The sole difference with the M17 is that it explodes upon impact as opposed to utilising a timer.
M9 22 mm HEAT[]

22 mm rifle grenade utilising a high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead.[note 3] It has a weight of 8 "mass" units.
The M9's damage output is significantly greater than that of the M1A2/M17 but has a much smaller blast radius of only 2 metres. It uses an impact fuse as opposed to a timer and shares the same minimum fuse range of the former two warheads (6 metres).
M19 22 mm WP[]

22 mm rifle grenade with a white phosphorous (WP) filling and an impact-based fuse. It weighs a "mass" of 8 and retains a minimum fuse range of 6 metres.
The explosive component of the warhead can potentially inflict lethal damage if a direct hit is scored on the target. The rest of the warhead (its WP contents) will instantly ignite and burn any organic targets within the 8 metre blast radius. Smaller embers that get scattered from the initial blast will last for up to 12 seconds before they dissipate, burning any humans that come within 1 metre range of them until then.
Trivia[]
- The M1 Garand was not originally included as part of the DLC's launch content. It was only added after the release of Update 1.2.[1]
- Prior to Update 1.3, none of the MACV faction's made use of the Garand. The patch's subsequent addition of the U.S. Marines sub-faction would grant the faction access to the Garand, though only for 1960s-era units.[2]
- Its sling is purely cosmetic and has no effect on the Garand's handling.
- The distinctive "ping" sound emitted once its clip is ejected is not actually audible if the weapon is emptied by an AI-controlled unit.

Notes[]
- ↑ Even though the Garand's riflescope (M1/2 Carbine 2.2x) technically allows for zeroing up to a maximum of 1,200 metres, it is not possible to do so while it remains mounted on the Garand.
- ↑ Stamina costs are calculated according to the following formula: (Weapon's "mass" * 0.04) * (Weapon's dexterity)
- ↑ The M9 technically uses a HEAT warhead but it does not actually cause HEAT-type damage and only inflicts 100% explosive damage.
