« The US Army wanted an accurate sniper rifle during the Vietnam War. The M14 was selected because of its accuracy, reliability, and the ability for a quick second shot. In 1969 National Match-grade M14 rifles were converted by adding a 3-9x Adjustable Ranging Telescope (ART) sight and supplying Match-grade ammunition, and designating it the XM21 Sniper Weapon System.

The XM21 is a 7.62 mm sniper rifle used by several BLUFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.

Overview[]

This article is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.

The XM21 is an M14 rifle that has been configured and reclassified as a sniper rifle.

It shares the same 20-round box magazines used by the M14 and can similarly load (optional) reduced capacity 10-round magazines. The XM21 shares an identical muzzle velocity of 850 m/s and variable fire rate depending on the selected fire mode: ~ 750 rounds per minute (semi-auto) or ~ 740 RPM (full-auto).

By default, XM21s are always fitted with a day sight that has a magnification of 3x-9x, though it can be swapped with a first generation night vision scope or removed altogether to only use the XM21's ironsights (with a zeroing range beginning at 100 metres up to 600 metres).

XM21s can mount the same dedicated sound suppressors designed for use on the M14, and can also be fitted with a bayonet and camouflage wrap over the barrel. However, it should be noted that attaching a suppressor at the same time with a bayonet will disable use of the latter; the suppressor must be removed first if the user intends on employing the bayonet's melee attack.

Sights[]

Arma3-sogpfxm21scope-ironsight-overview
The XM21's day sight can be manually zeroed starting from a minimum of 100 metres up to a maximum of 1,000 metres (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000).[note 1] It uses a default zeroing of 200 metres.

Arma3-sogpfxm21-ironsight-overview
If the XM21's default scope is removed, its ironsights can be used to aim with instead. The XM21's ironsights allow for manual zeroing starting from a minimum of 100 metres up to a maximum of 600 metres (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600). By default, the XM21's ironsights are set to utilise a zeroing of 100 metres.

Melee[]

Without a bayonet affixed, the user will strike targets with a buttstroke instead. This applies to all XM21 configurations regardless of the mounted type of scope or whether it has one attached to begin with. Melee attacks can inflict a maximum of up to 7 points of damage to the target if the buttstroke lands successfully.

It should be noted that melee attacks will drain 7.2 points of stamina whenever a buttstroke (or bayonet stab) is performed.[note 2]

Ammunition[]

NOTE: The XM21 is capable of loading the same magazines utilised by non-S.O.G. 7.62 mm-chambered weapons. To minimise clutter, they are deliberately excluded from this section.

XM21s can be loaded with four types of magazines. They can be shared with conventional M14 battle rifles but not with L1A1s and the L2A1 LMG:

20Rnd. M14 Mag[]

Arma3-ammunition-sogpf20rndm14

Standard 20-round box magazine loaded with 7.62 mm ball ammunition. Weighs a "mass" of 12 units.

Every fourth round fired will comprise of a visible tracer. Only the last four rounds of the magazine will consist entirely of tracer rounds.

20Rnd. M14 Mag (Tracer)[]

Arma3-ammunition-sogpf20rndm14

Alternate 20-round box magazine loaded exclusively with visible tracer ammunition.

10Rnd. M14 Mag[]

Arma3-ammunition-sogpf10rndm14

Reduced capacity box magazine with only ten rounds. It has half the weight (6 "mass") but remains otherwise identical to the 20-rounder magazines.

10Rnd. M14 Mag (Tracer)[]

Arma3-ammunition-sogpf10rndm14

Identical to regular 10-round magazines but loaded solely with visible tracers.

Trivia[]

  • Like its parent rifle, the sling on all XM21s is purely cosmetic and does not apply any benefits in actual gameplay.

Notes[]

  1. The only alternate optic available to the XM21 is the AN-PVS2 Starlight night vision scope. It is specifically restricted to a maximum of 400 metres as opposed to 1,000 metres.
  2. Stamina costs are calculated according to the following formula: (Weapon's "mass" * 0.04) * (Weapon's dexterity)
