The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (short form: MACV) is a BLUFOR faction in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.

Overview[]

The Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV) is made up of personnel from the U.S. Armed Forces, supporting the Republic of Vietnam in its struggle against the Communist north.[1]

The bulk of MACV comprises of forces from the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Special Forces, the U.S. Marine Corps and its Force Reconnaissance teams[2], the U.S. Navy, U.S. Navy SEALs and Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT)[3], and the U.S. Air Force.[1]

Additionally, MACV is supported by Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) teams who are deployed as scouting parties for conventional units, along with the Civilian Irregular Defence Group (CIDG), a force made up of local mercenaries. Lastly, the secretive joint operations unit S.O.G. - the "Studies and Observations Group", conducts unconventional warfare operations deep within northern territory.[1]

Equipment[]

Conventional MACV forces rely heavily on the latest hardware issued to the U.S. military, with olive-coloured uniforms and M1 helmets being standard-issue amongst all troops. Meanwhile, armoured vehicle crews and helicopter pilots are issued T56 and SVH4 crewman/flight helmets. Air Force/Marine/Navy fighter jet pilots on the other hand, exclusively wear the APH6 flight helmet.

Special operations units on the other hand, typically wear "sterile" equipment (not formally traceable to the U.S.) with tiger stripe camouflage patterns, spraypainted or all-black uniforms, boonie hats, bandanas, and headbands. S.O.G. operatives may even don civilian and North Vietnamese apparel to fool enemy forces when operating behind enemy lines.

For personal protection, special operations and conventional troops alike only wear load bearing vests customised to meet their needs. Those involved in waterborne operations may even wear vests with life preservers. However, pilots and vehicle crews may instead be issued flak jackets and explosive-resistant vests for added safety against shell fragments and small arms fire.

Trivia[]

  • The Navy SEAL sub-faction was not originally available on S.O.G.'s release and was only added after Update 1.1.[4]
  • Prior to Update 1.2, the RAAF initially served as a sub-faction within the broader MACV faction. Following the patch's release, their units were shifted into the standalone Australia faction instead.[5]
  • After the release of Update 1.3, the U.S. Marines were given a full roster of ground forces.[6] Prior to the update, the USMC sub-faction only consisted of pilots and supporting aircrews.
