The MG42 is a 7.92 mm general-purpose machine gun used exclusively by the Pathet Lao in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.
Overview[]
- This section is a stub. You can help Armed Assault Wiki by expanding it.
The MG42 is a selective-fire, short-recoil operated, air cooled, belt fed medium machine gun that fires from an open bolt. It is chambered to fire the 7.92×57 mm round.
It feeds from 50-round belts stored in drums, and can attain a fire rate of either ~ 1,379 rounds per minute (full auto) or 500 RPM (semi-auto) with a muzzle velocity of 740 m/s. The MG42 cannot be customised with optical sights, is unable to mount a bayonet, and cannot be suppressed. However, it does have an integral folding bipod that can be deployed for added stability during fully automatic fire.
For zeroing, the MG42 can be manually adjusted starting at a minimum of 100 metres up to a maximum of 2,000 metres. Any adjustments are made with increments/decrements of 100 metres.
Variants[]
MG42 (Static)[]
A static turret version of the handheld MG42, it is used by both the Pathet Lao and the Viet Cong.
Unlike the man-portable version, the static MG42 feeds from 250-round belts instead. Aside from one belt which is always pre-loaded, each turret has access to a further five belts in reserve. Additionally, static MG42s are not selective-fire weapons and are restricted to full auto.
It is available in a High and Low configuration. The raised (High) configuration has the MG42 mounted onto a tripod whilst the Low configuration has it resting on a folding bipod instead.
Rotation limits for both differ. In the case of the tripod, it permits the operator to fully rotate the gun in all directions horizontally but only allows for a maximum elevation and depression of 30 degrees in either direction vertically. For the Low variant, its limits are far more restrictive and only permit a maximum limit of 45 degrees horizontally. Vertically, this is limited to only 7 degrees for elevation and 8 degrees for depression.
Lastly, if the MG42 needs to be repositioned, the operator can disassemble the gun and its mount into a man-portable backpack form. The raised MG42 requires at least two personnel to carry both the weapon and the mount's backpacks. However, MG42s using a Low configuration specifically do not require a second person to carry the mount (as it does not utilise nor require one due to its folding bipod).
Ironsights[]

Melee[]
Melee attacks with the handheld MG42 will involve striking targets with a buttstroke. The attack will inflict a maximum of 7 points of damage if the buttstroke successfully connects with the target. 9.196 points of stamina will be drained whenever a buttstroke is performed.[note 2]
Ammunition[]
NOTE: By default, static MG42s only feed from 250-round belts unless specified otherwise.
Base damage value | Aerodynamic friction | Initial velocity (m/s) | Penetration depth (mm) |
---|---|---|---|
14 | -0.00068 | 740 | 17.76 |
Handheld MG42s can only load from 50-round drums. Likewise, static MG42s are restricted to feeding from 250-round belts:
50Rnd. MG42 Drum[]

Standard 50-round belt stored in a drum. It has a weight of 37 "mass" units.
Every fourth round fired will emit a visible tracer. Only the last five rounds of the belt will consist solely of tracers. It should be noted that fired rounds partially inflict splash damage and have a tiny spill radius of 0.1 metres.
50Rnd. MG42 Drum (Tracer)[]

Dedicated magazine loaded exclusively with fifty rounds' worth of tracer ammunition.
Aside from its tracer load, it weighs the same as the standard 50-round belt drums.
250Rnd. MG42 Belt[]

250-round belt used exclusively by static MG42s. It is not interchangeable with handheld MG42s.
Aside from its increased capacity, it has a slightly different ball/tracer mix with one tracer for every two rounds. The last five rounds will still consist exclusively of tracers, however.
Trivia[]
- The MG42 was not initially included as part of S.O.G.'s launch assets and was only added after Update 1.2.[1]
- Originally, only the static turret version was available at 1.2's launch. The handheld MG42 would only be added with Update 1.3's release.[2]
- Following the release of Update 1.2.1, the MG42's Low variant was changed so that it no longer splits into two separate backpacks and can be assembled without the need for a dedicated weapon mount.[3]
- The sling on handheld MG42s is purely cosmetic and has no functional effects upon the user.
- For unknown reasons, both configurations of the static MG42 strangely depict their belts extending from an invisible ammo box.
