The Nightstalker is a multi-vision scope used primarily by CSAT forces, and in limited numbers with both Viper and CTRG operatives in ArmA 3.
Design[]
The Nightstalker is a multi-vision scope that is capable of switching between four modes of operation: "normal" day, night, and black-/yellow-hot thermal vision modes.[CfgWp 6][CfgWp 7] The scope itself has variable magnification capability, with a minimum zoom of 4x[CfgWp 1][Formula 1] and a maximum of 10x zoom.[CfgWp 2][Formula 2]
The Nightstalker allows for manual zeroing adjustments starting from a minimum of 100 m up to a maximum of 1,000 m.[CfgWp 3] It also features an integrated laser rangefinder[CfgWp 8] and has a backup collimator sight for use in close quarters. The backup collimator uses a green dot reticle but has a fixed (non-adjustable) zeroing of 200 m instead.[CfgWp 4]
One unique feature of the Nightstalker is that it is capable of identifying targets for the user. Whenever a valid target such as a man-sized object is aimed at, brackets will be displayed on the scope's reticle to notify the user that they have "acquired" a target that can be engaged.[CfgWp 8]
Aside from sniper rifles (since the Nightstalker lacks proper BDC markers), it is suitable for use on most weapons regardless of their classification thanks to its diverse capabilities. The chevron-dot reticle is not limited to any specific calibre either and is (mostly) accurate with its default zeroing of 100 metres.[CfgWp 9][CfgWp 10]
It should be noted that attaching the Nightstalker onto a weapon will increase its inertia penalty by +0.2.[CfgWp 11]
AI[]
NOTE: The information in this section only applies to the AI.
The Nightstalker is classified[1] as a type 1 optical sight.[CfgWp 12] If the weapon is configured with AI-only firemodes[2], AI units that have the Nightstalker mounted onto their weapon will have access to medium range firemodes but not far (type 2) range firemodes.[3]
Camouflage[]
- Black: All-black finish.
Trivia[]
- Like its night vision-only counterpart the NVS, the Nightstalker is a completely fictional design.
- Hybrid scopes that are both night vision and thermal-capable did exist at the time of ArmA 3's release but were not as common as dedicated infrared or night vision scopes due to their prohibitively higher cost-per-unit, size, and weight.
- Although indirectly similar, the Nightstalker's closest real-life equivalent would be the optical scopes designed by BAE Systems for the U.S. military's "ENVG III"/"Family of Weapon Sights - Individual" (FWS-I) programme.
- Nightstalkers were not originally available in the Alpha and were only added in the Beta's final patch (coinciding with the game's full launch as part of Game Update 1.00).[4]
- Prior to the Marksmen DLC's release, the Nightstalker's zeroing settings and maximum magnification were different. This was changed after Game Update 1.42 so that its zeroing adjustments are made with increments/decrements of 100 metres, and that its maximum magnification was set to 10x.[5]
- Originally, the Nightstalker's thermal vision modes used orange-hot and red-hot coloured spectrums. After Game Update 2.10's release (which overhauled the game's thermal imaging systems) it was changed to black and yellow-hot modes instead.[6]
- The Nightstalker shares the same model with the NVS. The only difference between the two is the lack of a top mount collimator sight on the NVS and the chrome black finish on the Nightstalker.
- Nightstalkers are specifically labelled as a product of Clearskeye, an Armaverse company that specialises in manufacturing optical scopes.[7]
