The People's Army of Vietnam (short form: PAVN, informally known as the North Vietnamese Army/NVA) is a REDFOR faction in ArmA 3. It was added with the release of the S.O.G. Prairie Fire Creator DLC.

Overview[]

The People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) forms the bulk of North Vietnamese military forces resisting against the U.S.-controlled puppet regime of South Vietnam.[1]

Conventional forces are backed by Dac Cong commandos operating out of assault camps scattered throughout the Ho Chi Minh Trail. In addition, the Vietnam People's Navy (VPN) and Marines, along with the Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) provide tactical airlift and naval fire support to troops on the ground.[1]

Equipment[]

The PAVN utilises a mixture of Chinese and Soviet-made hardware. Early in the war, troops were issued tan uniforms but would later transition to using green-coloured uniforms. Chest rigs are universally worn by all soldiers and are simply modified to match the wearer's needs based on their role.

For other branches of the military, Marines and sailors wear blue-striped white uniforms with just a holster and sheathed blade, while Dac Cong SOF prefer to go barefoot and don all-black or camouflaged uniforms to accompany their chest rigs.

Headgear varies depending on the branch: for conventional infantry, pith helmets are standard-issue while TSH3 and SHL61/ZSH03 flight helmets are given to armoured vehicle crews and helicopter/fighter jet pilots (respectively). For some field infantry units, they may also wear East German-made M56 steel helmets.

Dac Cong operatives exclusively wear boonie hats, headbands and on occasion, pith helmets fitted with camo netting. Lastly, most sailors and Marines wear a mixture of their signature caps, pith, and Soviet SSh-40 steel helmets.

Trivia[]

  • PAVN units utilise a dedicated Vietnamese radio protocol but it is completely muted in regular gameplay as no audio was actually recorded for the Creator DLC's release. Ambient shouts, dialogue and other voice lines in Vietnamese will only be heard via the Ambient Voices system.
  • The VPAF's pilots and aircrews existed at launch, though the sub-faction did not have access to any fixed-wing aircraft until the release of Update 1.2[2] and 1.3[3] which added the MiG-19 and MiG-21, respectively.
