The Pilot Helmet is a ballistic-resistant helmet worn by BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR jet pilots in ArmA 3.

Overview[]

The Pilot Helmet is exclusively used by fixed-wing fighter jet and VTOL pilots. They have a weight of 60 "mass" units.[CfgWp 1]

Rated at Level III protection standards, Pilot Helmets are essentially better versions of the aircrew helmets donned by rotary-wing pilots. Unlike the latter, the Pilot Helmet provides full protection for the user's entire head and face thanks to its enclosed HMD visor.

It can comfortably allow the user to survive two hits from 9 mm-chambered firearms or one 6.5 mm rifle round (albeit not at point blank range). Meanwhile, the enclosed visor will minimise damage from indirect explosions and other common hazards faced by pilots at extreme altitudes.

Furthermore, the Pilot Helmet features integrated night vision capability which eliminates the need for the user to wear an externally mounted set of NVGs. It also provides the wearer with a full peripheral view of their surroundings when activated, making it far superior to regular NVGs.[CfgWp 2]

Its only drawback stems from its heavy weight and lack of camouflage. With a "mass" of 60, the Pilot Helmet will consume much of the wearer's stamina and valuable inventory space. Fortunately, these two problems aren't necessarily issues for most fixed-wing pilots as they won't be on the ground fighting.

Trivia[]

  • In-game Pilot Helmets are loosely inspired by the real-world "Generation II" helmet intended for pilots flying Lockheed Martin's "F-35 Lightning II" stealth fighter.[1]
    • Just like the Heli Pilot/Crew Helmets, its usage by CSAT forces makes little sense given that the Chinese military has its own indigenous fixed-wing aircrew helmet designs. They similarly feature either integrated or externally mounted HMD visors.[2]
  • Prior to Game Update 1.46, the Pilot Helmet provided very little protection for its wearer and did not actually do much to minimise damage from explosions (base armour value of 1.2, 40% damage reduction modifier).[3]
  • Pilot Helmets did not initially possess integrated night vision capability upon ArmA 3's release. This was only enabled in platform updates leading up to the release of the Apex expansion.[4][5]
