Orlando was a main character in ArmA: Armed Assault's Royal Flush campaign.

Background[]

Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Sahrani, Orlando was the brother of then-Princess Isabella and was heir apparent to the throne of his late father, Joseph III.

Royal Flush (2007)[]

Both the Prince and his father are reportedly killed in a helicopter crash almost a year after the country was reunified. As the sole remaining heir to the throne, his sister Isabella is immediately crowned as Queen of the Kingdom.

Though his father had perished in the crash, the Prince had miraculously survived the crash somehow and was sheltered by the insurgents opposed to the Queen's rule.

In response to her sweeping "reforms" - which only benefited the South and left the North impoverished, they had sparked a rebellion in the Kingdom's northern provinces.

The Prince's arrival and his promises of restoring fair policies for both regions, would change their ultimate goal to reinstating Orlando as the rightful King instead.

Though his survival was unconfirmed as of yet, Isabella suspected that her brother was behind the uprising and hired the services of "foreign advisers" from a private military company. The PMCs were unaware of the truth behind their targets, and they carried out their mission to retrieve "biological weapons" in the possession of Orlando's people.

Following a nighttime raid against one of the insurgent camps, Orlando was forced to flee with two of his aides but was chased down by the mercenaries of Royal Flush. Held at gunpoint, Orlando calmly explained the situation to the mercenary team's leader, hoping that the PMCs would agree to help him regain the throne.

« The government of South Sahrani is illegitimate. If you are aiding this self-appointed queen, you are committing a crime. We are warning you. Let us go--

Though confused by the sudden turn of events, the PMC team leader inexplicably sided with the Prince. The mercenary protected him from being killed by her sister's assassins, who had just arrived onto the scene and were preparing to eliminate the "insurgent leader".

The mercenaries were now all that stood between Orlando and certain death. But the tense situation turned into a bloody firefight within a matter of moments, with all of the assassins killed by Royal Flush. Unfortunately, the PMC team's leader was killed in the firefight, leaving Orlando's fate in the hands of his successor Kurt Lambowski.

« Orlando: So many dead! We who have survived now have an even bigger responsibility to the nation. I owe you my life. Sir...?
Lambowski: Sergeant Lambowski, your majesty. Military advisor.
Orlando: I would like to secure your services into the future, sergeant. I don't know what they led you to believe, but I presume that your agency is interested in working with the legitimate government of South Sahrani, even though the real heir to the throne is in exile. My claim is true, but if it is to be officially recognized the fight is far from over.

Lambowski agrees to help the Prince regain power. But before the Prince could do so publicly, he needed more allies to support his claim. With Royal Flush's help, Orlando's people first struck one of his sister's prisoner camps at Matamoros. The camp held numerous high-ranking officials who were due to be executed for having helped the rebellion.

Orlando's people succeeded in freeing the prisoners - one of whom turned out to be Raoul Gonzales, a firm supporter and personal aide to the Prince. Glad to see his charge alive and well, Gonzales immediately joined the rebellion and concocted plans to further Orlando's claim for the throne. However, word had also reached Orlando that another camp was located near the city of Eponia. If he could free the prisoners, it would bolster the Prince's popularity even further. Backed once again by Royal Flush, Orlando's people liberated the camp's prisoners.

Now feeling confident enough to address the nation publicly and expose his sister's involvement in the death of their father, Royal Flush assisted him in clearing out the Kingdom's largest TV station of security forces. Using the speech carefully prepared for him by Gonzales, he made his survival known to the people and spoke out against his sister, denouncing her illegitimate reign.

« ...I am grateful to the people of Sahrani for their support. Now when this self-appointed queen announces her resignation, I intend to assume the throne that is rightfully mine. My goal is to bring peace and stability, to create a liberal constitution and to lead this great nation towards renewal and prosperity.

Backed into a corner by her brother and at risk of losing all of her power, Isabella returned to the palace and offered Orlando a deal; she would "give up" the throne in exchange for amnesty. Orlando agreed, and immediately made his way towards the summit.

Death[]

However, her peace deal was actually a setup meant to lure the Prince into a trap.

Gonzales had received word of the plans from his informants close to the Queen, but was unable to convince the mercenaries of Royal Flush to save the Prince. Orlando was subsequently ambushed at the summit and was shot to death by her Royal Guards.

Personality and Appearance[]

Orlando was a light-skinned Sahranian male with dark brown hair and a light beard. He wore camouflaged fatigues with short sleeves, and also donned a dark green-coloured body armour vest.

« The Northern opposition movement and I share a similar agenda. I have always been opposed to authoritarian governments like the kind that has propped up my father and sister.
Orlando
»

Between his father and sister, Orlando was perhaps the most benevolent member of the royal family. He despised his family members precisely because of their selfish desires for consolidating their own power, rather than working to improve the wellbeing of the Kingdom's people equally.

However, it's somewhat questionable as to whether he held the necessary traits to lead with conviction. Orlando was demonstrated to be quite naive and typical of idealists, had a lack of careful foresight to see through the duplicity of others; a costly mistake which he paid for with his life.

Trivia[]

  • Orlando's assassination can be prevented by Royal Flush who then help him overthrow his sister. This event is completely non-canonical in the main timeline however, as Orlando is stated to officially die at the hands of Isabella's assassins.
