Pusta (Russian: Пуста) was a settlement located in South Zagoria, Chernarus.
Overview[]
Located between the mountains of Pik Kozlova to the south and Vysoky Kamen in the north, Pusta was once a small farming village on the southern coast of South Zagoria. It was situated on the outskirts of the regional capital of Chernogorsk.
The village was abandoned on October 9th, 2009[1], after most of its residents were massacred by pro-Russian separatists.

History[]
In September 2009[1], a province-wide uprising was carried out by pro-Russian separatists from the so-called "Chernarussian Movement of the Red Star" (ChDKZ). The ChDKZ overran many of the poorly secured and ill-maintained military bases[2] throughout the region. By early October, the ChDKZ had largely succeeded with its uprising and managed to capture almost every settlement in the province; Pusta included.[3][4]

For the villagers, their nightmare had only just begun, for the ChDKZ showed no mercy to any of its inhabitants due to their perceived support for the government. The village's councillors and CDF soldiers who had fled to the village (and were being treated by the local doctor) were among the first victims to be executed by the ChDKZ.[5][6]
Those who were not executed on the spot were instead rounded up and taken into one of the barns. Male adults and children were tortured by the insurgents for sport while females were raped.[7][8] The ChDKZ then forced the surviving villagers to dig a large hole in the forest to dump the bodies of the deceased into it. This included the dead from other nearby villages whose corpses had been brought to Pusta by truck.[5][9]

It would not be until October 9th when a team of U.S. Marine Force Reconnaissance operatives infiltrated Pusta and cleared the village of insurgents. The Marines were sent to destroy the village's communications post but had not anticipated witnessing what they had just stumbled into. By the time they had freed the remaining captives, only a handful of residents were still alive. After being told about its existence, the Marines would later discover the mass grave containing the decaying corpses of villagers and CDF soldiers alike.[10][11]
To avoid causing collateral damage, the Marines opted to not call in an airstrike on the communications post and decided to blow it up using satchel charges instead.[12] The village was subsequently abandoned after the communications post was razed, with the Marines evacuating the remaining survivors to a cabin on the outskirts of Pusta[13] before moving onto their next objective.
