The Railgun Tower serves as a buildable Defence-type structure in ArmA: Mobile Ops.

Overview[]

  • Roles:
    • Defensive structure
    • Anti-ground vehicle defence
« Modern defence weapon system that powers up if it detects an enemy presence and fires extremely powerful rounds. Powering up takes 40 seconds and during this time the Railgun is passive. After powering up it targets ground enemy units with high powerful splash damage projectiles.

Purpose[]

Available after upgrading their Headquarters to Level 8, the Railgun Tower is one of the two final Defence-type structures that can be built by players.

The Railgun Tower is extremely deadly against every ground-based infantry unit and drone. Anything that isn't a Tracked UGV is almost certainly guaranteed to get wiped out after only one or two direct hits. Even the Tracked UGV itself isn't completely immune to the Railgun Tower either, since it moves very slowly and has short range. This means that a single tower can usually fire off two shots before the UGV can even get close enough to return fire.

It has a DPS output of 76, and is only able to attack ground units. The Railgun Tower has the greatest range out of all the buildable static defences, being able to cover a minimum/maximum radius of 20-68 metres.

Like the Drone Launchpad, the Railgun Tower does have a few drawbacks to its usage compared to most other defences. For starters, it has a powerup delay of 40 seconds which will only begin to countdown once an attack begins. During this period, it is left vulnerable to being attacked as it can't retaliate until the timer finishes.

The Railgun Tower also has a larger minimum attack radius where it cannot fire upon units that are inside of it. This leaves it particularly vulnerable to Force Recon squads, as they can simply use the Camouflage ability to avoid detection and get up close to the tower. It should also be noted that since it cannot attack flying units, even a lone Hexacopter Drone can safely bombard an unassisted Railgun Tower.

Last but not least, it also has an extremely steep construction cost and requires one million supplies to build and a further two million to upgrade with each subsequent level (not to mention each upgrade on average taking more than 96+ hours to finish). Though somewhat justified due to its very high damage output and greater HP pool, its upkeep is still astronomically high for a single defensive structure.

Because of its startup delay and wide coverage, the Railgun Tower should ideally be placed in the centre of your base rather than on the outside near your walls. This is because by the time an enemy player manages to break through the initial line of defences, they will be forced to deal with a now-powered up tower, whereas if placed near the outer layer of the walls, it will be easily destroyed before it can even finish powering up.

Likewise, placing one or two APERS Mines close by, or blocking them behind other auxiliary structures like Fuel Depots can also deter Force Recon squads from being able to run close enough to destroy it.
