Armed Assault Wiki
« After unsuccessful launch of SCUD missile, Gen. Guba decides to leave the island and heads to the harbor where his evac ship is prepared. Against all odds, Maj. James Gastovski manages to track him down and capture him, destroying a second SCUD launcher in the process. Remaining rogue Soviet Forces capitulate immediately afterwards.
Mission Description
»

Red Dawn is the penultimate mission of ArmA: Cold War Assault's Cold War Crisis campaign.

Diary[]

« General Guba's caused me a lot of grief on this godforsaken island. Now it's payback time.

Better stay sharp, though - don't want to lose it now, having come so far. Scouts report there are plenty of hardcore troops still loyal to Guba in the North, and they may even have tanks.

And I also suspect the good General's got trick or two still up his sleeve.

At least I've got a few vehicles of my own here in the base, a strong team, and a good supply of grenades...

Overview[]

The player controls U.S. Army special forces Major James Gastovski. General Aleksei Guba's main threat to NATO has been decisively neutralised thanks to the Major's efforts, but the world is still teetering on the brink of World War III. To prevent the rogue leader from causing any more chaos, Gastovski must eliminate his remaining forces and capture him once and for all...dead or alive.

Gastovski's role/class:

  • Specops / Black Op

Loadout options:

Objectives[]

Primary[]

  • (1) Arrest General Guba before he leaves the island
  • (2) Be sure to deal with any last-minute surprises from Guba
  • (3) Get back

Optional[]

N/A

Mandatory[]

  • Gastovski must survive
  • Guba must not be allowed to escape
  • The second nuclear missile must not be allowed to fire
  • Avoid collateral damage/friendly fire (point score must not drop below 500)
  • Remain within the combat area

Walkthrough[]

NOTE:

  • It is not necessary to capture Guba first. You can destroy the second nuclear missile even if Gastovski is unaware of its presence.
  • Keep in mind that the timer for the second primary objective (Be sure to deal with any last-minute surprises from Guba) begins counting down from the start of the mission.

Primary 1: Arrest General Guba before he leaves the island[]

NOTE:

  • Guba's AI may or may not refuse to surrender immediately depending on the circumstances of your current playthrough.
  • You may need to stand close to him for several seconds before the cutscene script triggers and the objective gets marked as complete.

To prevent Guba's escape, you must intercept him before his driver manages to deliver him to the harbour at coordinates Ic24. However, even if he arrives there, you still have at least a minute to stop him from getting into the boat. Just be aware that should he manage to somehow get into the boat, you'll have no choice but to kill him from that point as the only way to "stop" him is to blow up the vessel with an anti-tank weapon.

As for capturing him, you will start inside the base at Fd47. There's a HMMWV, an M113 APC, two Ural trucks, and a HMG-armed Jeep available for Gastovski's squad to use. Take the APC and hop into the driver's seat; the other vehicles are a bit too risky to ride in due to their lack of cover and/or armament.

Head south along the trail and keep going west at the crossroads until you reach the village at Eh51, then turn north and keep driving until you reach the military compound at Ee46. Two enemy soldiers will be patrolling along the eastern side. Get rid of them both, then keep driving through the compound until you see the parked fuel truck.

OFP-mission-reddawn-02

Dismount from the APC and hop into the truck yourself. Drive towards the grounded Mi-24 gunship on the south-western side of the compound and park as close as possible next to it.

Then hop into the gunship's pilot seat and order your squad members to board the passenger cabin (be sure to have one of your subordinates control the gunner's seat). If you parked the truck close enough, you should automatically refuel from the truck once the engine is fired up and the rotors begin to spin.

Once you're good to go, start climbing and fly west in the direction of coordinates Be42. Take note of the three static Shilkas stationed at the following coordinates:

  • Ed36
  • Ha24
  • Hi19

On the way towards Guba's position, be sure to destroy the T-80 stationed at Cc46 first. Use a mix of 30 mm cannon fire and ATGMs to knock it out.

OFP-mission-reddawn-03

Once the T-80 has been destroyed, continue flying north-west until you see Guba's car. Wait for him to dismount and start running away before opening fire on his three Spetsnaz bodyguards (be careful not to target Guba in the crossfire). As soon as those three are dead, find a safe place to land nearby and then dismount before chasing him down.

To "capture" Guba, you need only trigger the cutscene with him monologuing about his inevitable victory. When that ends, he will "join" your squad as a subordinate. Order him to get into the gunship as a passenger, and then hop back into the pilot's seat after Gastovski informs Papa Bear about the second nuclear missile.

Primary 2: Be sure to deal with any last-minute surprises from Guba[]

NOTE: If you fail to stop the SCUD from launching in time, skip ahead to the Ending 4, 5, and 6 sections below.

OFP-mission-reddawn-01

LEGEND
Red: BMP
Green: Shilka
Pink: Potential SCUD location (randomised)
Orange: Spetsnaz reinforcements (AI-dependent)

Make your way immediately towards the north-eastern corner of the island. Guba's second SCUD launcher will be located at one of two random locations depending on your playthrough, either at Ih20 or Ij16.

Keep in mind that you have exactly thirty minutes to destroy the SCUD or else Guba's Spetsnaz operatives will succeed in launching the missile. This counter immediately starts from the beginning of the mission, so try not to waste too much time arresting Guba or attacking the stray Soviet patrols.

Additionally, keep in mind that the second SCUD will get reinforced by Spetsnaz before this objective triggers. One (dismounted) infantry squad will position themselves at the harbour at Jc17, while a mechanised infantry squad will be waiting inside the village at Ij17. Adding onto this are three more threats that will move into the area as the mission progresses:

  • Two T-80 tanks at Ij16 (initially starts at Dd40)
  • A BMP with a rifle squad on overwatch at If19 (initially starts at Ea47)
  • A fourth Shilka at Ij16 (static, starts at this location by default)

Destroy as many targets as you can along the way using all three of your gunship's weapon systems: cannon fire, rockets, and ATGMs. In particular, make good use of your ATGMs to blow up the Shilkas from a distance and try to lock-on as soon as your gunner reports contact (do not forget that those AI gunners can attack you from >1,000 metres away).

When all threats in the surrounding area are gone, starting searching both sites for the SCUD battery. The objective will be completed the instant the SCUD battery gets blown up.

Primary 3: Get back[]

NOTE: Refer to the Ending 1, 2, and 3 sections below if you complete this objective.

The objective and mission and will end in victory shortly after Gastovski reports his success back to Papa Bear.

Ending 1: SCUD destroyed/Guba captured alive (True ending)[]

Canonical good ending. To achieve this ending, you must capture Guba alive and then destroy the second SCUD launcher in time.

Getting this ending will unlock the next mission and true epilogue to the campaign (Status Quo).

Ending 2: SCUD destroyed/Guba killed (Good ending)[]

Alternate good (non-canon) ending. You will automatically get this ending if you manage to destroy the second SCUD but did not keep Guba alive.

Getting this ending will also unlock the epilogue to the campaign (Status Quo).

Ending 3: SCUD destroyed/Guba escapes (Good ending)[]

Another good (but non-canon) ending. You will get locked into this ending if destroyed the SCUD launcher but failed to apprehend Guba. This will happen if you do not trigger the cutscene between Gastovski and Guba.

Getting this ending will similarly unlock the epilogue to the campaign (Status Quo).

Ending 4: SCUD launches/Guba captured (Bad ending)[]

OFP-mission-reddawn-00

The first of the three non-canon bad endings. Getting this ending is caused by you succeeding in capturing Guba alive but failing to destroy the second SCUD in time.

Ending 5: SCUD launches/Guba killed (Bad ending)[]

The second out of three non-canon bad endings. This ending is achieved if you fail to destroy the SCUD and "accidentally" kill Guba before or after the cutscene.

Ending 6: SCUD launches/Guba escapes (Bad ending)[]

The last and worst ending out of the three (non-canon) bad endings. This is obtained if you do not capture Guba and he manages to escape, along with failing to destroy the second SCUD in time before it launches.

Tips[]

  • It may be better to focus on destroying the SCUD first rather than capturing Guba. The time limit for the objective can be quite strict, and the AI in Cold War Assault doesn't have the best driving skills anyway so it will take a while for him to actually reach the harbour.
  • If you dislike flying and opt to mount a ground assault instead, you can obtain heavy firepower to match the enemy T-80s by heading to the military compound at Ff53. It has a Shilka and a T-72, though make sure you bring along the Ural Repair truck from the starting location (both vehicles are heavily damaged by default).
    • Should they get destroyed, you can obtain a backup T-80 tank at Gg27, while another unmanned Shilka can be found at Gc39. Unlike the T-72 and the first Shilka, the T-80/second Shilka do not need repairs and are at full hull integrity.
  • Consider putting additional LAW rockets in your vehicle if you decide to bring one and aren't planning on abandoning it. You'll encounter heavy enemy armour and may need more.
  • Should you run out of LAW rockets, don't forget that the SCUD itself actually contains ammo for AK-74s, some hand grenades, and RPG rockets that you can use to destroy it (assuming you don't have any explosives on hand).

Trivia[]

  • The first SCUD's wreckage from the previous mission can be found if the player returns to coordinates Eb53.
  • A heavily damaged UH-60 helicopter can be found inside the compound at Fi61.
