NOTE: This article is about the Sahrani terrain in ArmA: Armed Assault. For the country that represents the combined state of Sahrani, see Kingdom of Sahrani. |
Sahrani (alternately United Sahrani) is a playable terrain in ArmA: Armed Assault and its expansion pack ArmA: Queen's Gambit.
Overview

« | Sahrani is a fictional island laying in an area of approximately 400 square kilometers. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Sahrani is an island which is the base of two very different countries to the North and South, the Northern country is a Communist Dictatorship whilst the country to the South is a Democratic Monarchy. Southern Sahrani profits fairly well from the sale of oil and other exports, so the buildings and surrounding display a little more affluence than those of the Northern neighbours, it's a little warmer in the South so architecture tends to also reflect that. The landscape and terrain the player will experience varies quite significantly as the story moves around the island. Obviously all areas of the island are accessible so the player can find himself wading through water on a beach, pushing through trees in the forest. Of course a lot of the combat will also involve moving from town to town, fighting inside and around the numerous buildings and structures as is normal in modern urban combat, so the surroundings will reflect that as well. A remote island located in the Atlantic Ocean, Sahrani was once an outpost for the British Empire's Royal Navy at the height of the Napoleonic wars in the 19th century.[1]
After gaining its independence in 1898, the (then-) newly established Kingdom of Sahrani would remain at relative peace until the mid 1900s.[1] Backed by the Soviet Union, a revolution would kick off in the northern provinces, leading to the formation of the Democratic Republic of Sahrani sometime during during the Cold War and subsequent division of the island into North and South Sahrani.[2][3] It would not be until mid 2006 that the island would be once again be reunified under the leadership of the South.[4][5]
Sahrani can be best described as an island of both "past and the future".[6] In the Kingdom's highly affluent southern provinces, sunny beaches, brightly-lit streets lined with terraced apartments, and luxurious hotels, can be found in or around almost every city. In the northern provinces of the (former) Democratic Republic of Sahrani, one does not have to go far to find generic Eastern bloc-style apartments, collective farms, imposing mountain ranges, and lush forests scattered throughout the province.[7][8]
Geography

Topographic map displaying locations and terrain features
Sahrani's landmass (excluding the surrounding waters) clocks in at a total size of only 98 square kilometres.[9] If the surrounding waters and islands are also included, this extends to a total size of approximately 400 square kilometres.[8][10]
The island itself is split into two biomes.[7] In the northern provinces of the former DRS, European-style forests cover most of terrain. Mountain ranges extend from the far north-west down to the central section near the village of Tlaloc (the Sierra Cresta/Puntas Occidental/Puntas Oriental). Both the northern and eastern parts of the island also have their own mountain ranges: the Sierra de Revolución/Sierra Masbete (in the north) and the Sierra de Los Pinos (in the south-east).[8][10][11]

In the southern provinces, the island transitions to tropical/Mediterranean-like terrain with hot and humid weather conditions.[12][13] Unlike the northern provinces, there is only one mountain range: the Sierra Madre, which lies to the south of the capital Paraíso.[11]
The rest of the southern province consists mostly of sparse woodland, sandy beaches[7], and the occasional desert plateau/plains like the Plato de Cayo (east of Arcadia) and the Terra Acorcha (between the towns of Cayo and Dolores).[8][10][11]
Settlements

Excluding smaller, unnamed villages as well as undisclosed "camps" and island settlements, Sahrani has a combined total of forty-one villages, towns and cities scattered across the Kingdom's northern and southern provinces. Nineteen of these are located in the north while twenty-two are located in the south.
The capital city of the Kingdom, Paraíso, is specifically located in the southern province.[6]

Variants
South Sahrani
A truncated version of the Sahrani terrain, South Sahrani exclusively depicts the southern provinces of the Kingdom. North Sahrani is not included on this version of the terrain (the valley that divides Corazol is completely missing).[14]
United Sahrani
A slightly altered version of the Sahrani terrain, United Sahrani features various changes to the terrain. These range from the omission of pro-DRS propaganda billboards, the removal of various fortifications and barricades that previously divided the North and South along the border at Corazol, as well as other minor visual changes to reflect the nation's reunification under the South.[15]

Trivia
- Before Armed Assault was officially released, only the South Sahrani version of the terrain could be accessed in the demo.[14]
- Sahrani was the first official terrain to feature a combination of tropical and Mediterranean-like environments, a style of terrain that would not make a comeback to the series until ArmA 3.
