Tiberia was a settlement located in the Kingdom of South Sahrani.

Overview[]

Located west of Iguana and due south of Cayo, it could be accessed via the road that breaks off from the main highway which runs through the southern provinces leading towards the capital. It is a farming village that has fields of crops surrounding the eastern and northern sides.

A small chapel was constructed atop a hill in the south that provides a decent view of the Bajo Estrecho. On sunny days, the isle of San Tomas is briefly visible in the distance.

Its entire populace was murdered by soldiers from the Sahrani Liberation Army (SLA) at the height of their invasion of the South.[1][2][3] It remains unclear as to whether the village has been resettled post-reunification (as of November 1st, 2007).

History[]

Following its successful invasion, Tiberia was one of the many "border" settlements that fell under the occupation of Northerners when allied troops were forced to pull back from Somato and the southern coast.[1]

But for the citizens of Tiberia, their nightmare had only just begun. In an act of unexplainable brutality, the people of Tiberia were slaughtered en-masse by Northern soldiers. By the time American and South Sahrani troops had liberated the village on June 12th, it was already too late. Not a single individual had been spared and the village was devoid of life.[3][4]

Disgusted by the SLA's actions, Southern officials demanded that Prime Minister Torrez be personally held accountable for the country's crimes as the overwhelming evidence, filmed on live broadcast to media networks worldwide, was simply irrefutable.[3][4][5][4][6]

SPOILER ALERT

NOTE: This section contains spoilers from ArmA: Armed Assault's 'Armed Assault' campaign.

Contrary to the vociferous outcry of Southern leaders, Tiberia's inhabitants had not been massacred by Northern troops. In actuality, King Joseph III had ordered his soldiers to detain the citizens and hold them in captivity due to their perceived lack of loyalty. Those who refused to obey their commands were executed on the spot.[7]

Several days later, they were scheduled to be transferred to another camp at Mercalillo deep within (then-occupied) Northern territory, where they were due to be "disposed" of shortly.[1][7][8]

The Royal forces are working hard all over the kingdom to rebuild a thriving nation nearly destroyed by violent conflict, but they were not prepared for the gruesome truth discovered at the city of Cayo.", AAN News

With us here is Captain Riboli, an officer of the Royal Army Corps of Sahrani. Please, can you tell us where we are and what has happened here? RIBOLI: Yes. This is Cayo, one of the cities previously occupied by the SLA. You may notice there are no civilians to be seen here. When we retook the city, we first thought they had simply fled, but then we started to find graves. Everywhere around the city we found them. The people here, they were slaughtered like animals. NORDWICK: But Captain, this was near the frontline, I am sure that the nearby US forces wouldn't allow such an atrocity to take place - or were they not here? RIBOLI: No, the US Army was here, but they decided to move to a more strategic defensive position and leave the cities of Cayo, Tiberia and several others undefended. The SLA soldiers were able to simply walk into the cities. But I don't blame the Americans, even we couldn't imagine the Northern forces were capable of such barbarity. However, this is the horrible truth we are confronted with now. NORDWICK: This is an absolute tragedy! RIBOLI: Yes, it is and I call for justice here! We can not let this horror go unpunished! NORDWICK: Thank you Captain. We can see that the tragedies of this war will not be easily forgotten.", AAN News

The guys from 3rd Squad had a run-in with some Royals over in Corazol just a few days ago. We've noticed many Southerners seem to hold us responsible for what happened at Cayo and Tiberia, but so far it hasn't come to any real confrontations. I guess our politicians holding off the invasion for so long didn't contribute much to the atmosphere here. The Royals are absolutely dead set on taking out the Northern regime, and I can't blame them after what the SLA just did."

There were no guards or closed fences. They must be refugees or something. [...] CAYO SURVIVOR: Please, you can't tell the Southern soldiers about us! [...] But you don't understand! We're from the South, from Cayo! US SOLDIER 1: Cayo? That can't be. The whole city was wiped out! The Royal Army found mass graves all around the Southern cities! CAYO SURVIVOR: Ofcourse! They were responsible for them! This was the price the Southern cities paid in the past for not supporting the king! The world now thinks we're all dead. Once the king's troops find us, we will be! Please don't leave us here!"

As a last terrible act, retreating SLA forces have laid waste to several towns and refugee camps in the vicinity of the capital. While coalition forces were advancing at an incredible pace, the RACS troops securing the gained territory once again had to face the horrors that brought them here in the first place. After the invasion, and the SLA's scorched earth mentality in the final days of the conflict, there is a lot of rebuilding to be done on both sides of the border. On the streets and in the hearts of the people.", AAN News
