NOTE: This article is about Searchlights in the main ARMA games. For Searchlights in ArmA 3's Global Mobilization - Cold War Germany Creator DLC, see Searchlight (Global Mobilization).

The Searchlight is a static turret featured in both ArmA: Armed Assault and ArmA 2.

ArmA: Armed Assault[]

The Searchlight is used by both the U.S. Army and SLA military forces in ArmA: Armed Assault.

Overview[]

The Searchlight is simply an unarmed static turret that can illuminate any position depending on where the spotlight itself is facing. Mounted on a pedestal tripod, it is intended to serve as a low-tech method of lighting up areas with poor visibility for troops lacking access to night vision equipment.

The pedestal tripod allows the Searchlight to be freely swivelled in any direction horizontally[A1CfgV 1][A1CfgV 2], though it is restricted to a vertical rotation limit of 70 degrees elevation[A1CfgV 3] and just 10 degrees depression.[A1CfgV 4]

It should be noted that a single bullet or indirect explosion is enough to instantly destroy the Searchlight's lamp. Because the Searchlight itself serves no other purpose or function, destroying its lamp will essentially turn it into a useless prop.

Trivia[]

  • SLA Searchlights are not available in the mission editor and only appear in the expansion pack's Rahmadi Conflict campaign.[1][2]
    • On the other hand, the RACS are only depicted using Searchlight turrets in the Royal Flush campaign.[3]
  • Prior to Patch 1.04, the Searchlight's beam would automatically switch itself off if its "gunner" dismounted from the turret. This was changed after the patch's release so that the Searchlight's light no longer gets switched off even if there's no "gunner" manning it.[4]

ArmA 2[]

The Searchlight is used by several BLUFOR, REDFOR and INDFOR factions in ArmA 2.

Overview[]

Returning in ArmA 2, the Searchlight remains the same and merely serves as a static turret used to illuminate positions at nighttime.

As in Armed Assault, the lamp can still be easily destroyed by a single bullet. The only difference is that the Searchlight's vertical rotation limits are slightly different since it has a depression of 20 degrees rather than 10.[A2CfgV 1] Its horizontal limits remain the same (the turret can be freely swivelled in any direction)[A2CfgV 2][A2CfgV 3] and vertical elevation also stays unchanged at 70 degrees.[A2CfgV 4]

It serves no other purpose. Additionally, it should also be noted that unlike most static turrets, the Searchlight cannot be disassembled into a man-portable backpack form.

Trivia[]

  • Its model is simply an updated port of Armed Assault's Searchlight.
  • Before Patch 1.08's release for ArmA 2 (pre-Operation Arrowhead), the AI's vision was not actually affected by the Searchlight's beam. This was fixed by the patch so that any objects illuminated by the Searchlight will now be visible to the AI.[5]
