The T-34 is a Light Tank used by Takistani Army forces, NAPA guerillas, and Takistani anti-government rebels in ArmA 2.

Overview

  • Role:
    • Fire support
« T-34 production started during WWII in 1941. The tank is quite simple in comparison with modern tanks and thus is very easy to operate.
It is armed with an 85mm cannon and two 7.62mm machineguns.
Armoury Description
»

Design

Then-considered a technologically innovative design, the T-34 was created to address the shortcomings of the earlier BT series of tanks in use by the Soviet Armed Forces.

It was first developed in 1936 and had its early prototypes in production by 1939-1940. The T-34's main attributes are its simple design, which makes it easy to mass produce and repair.

Armament
It is armed with an 85 mm gun and has a coaxially-mounted 7.62 mm medium machine gun. A second forward-facing 7.62 mm MMG is also fixed to the front-right section of the hull.

The standard loadout of the T-34 gives the main gun 10 rounds of armour-piercing (AP) and 33 rounds of high-explosive (HE) shells.

The coaxial and hull DT machine guns on the other hand, are each pre-loaded to feed from one 60-round belt, and have a further four belts in reserve for a total of 600 rounds combined (with each having access to 300 rounds worth of belts).

Features
Though largely outdated, its World War 2-era 85 mm gun remains as a potent weapon, and can still be used to destroy modern Armoured Personnel Carriers like the AAVP-7A1 or the Stryker if they are caught unaware.

Its plentiful supply of HE shells also makes it useful as an mobile anti-infantry gun, though the T-34 will still need support from other units and defilade to hide behind to protect itself from anti-tank weapons.

Drawbacks
Unsurprisingly, the T-34 is basically identical to its (slightly) newer counterpart in that it hardly fares any better against other modern vehicles.

Not only does it lack the firepower of other AFVs, its armour protection is inferior to even MRAPs like the Dingo 2 CZ and is virtually non-existent, which leaves its crew vulnerable to all anti-armour weapons, land mines, as well as large calibre small arms fire. Heavy machine guns are similarly capable of penetrating through its thin armour plating, which can result in damage to either the hull or even the crew inside.

Naturally, the T-34's gun is completely useless against modern Main Battle Tanks. The American M1A1 and the Russian T-90 alike will take very little damage unless their engines are hit repeatedly with multiple direct hits with AP shells. In addition, the entire supply of the T-34's AP shells will be needed to destroy them in this way.

Another major weakness of the T-34 is its high profile; it is surprisingly taller than most modern tanks (especially compared to the T-55). As such, it can be visually identified and targeted more easily from long distances.

Crew Capacity
The T-34 has maximum crew capacity of four that consists of the driver, two gunners (one for the main gun and another for the hull gun), and a commander. It cannot carry any additional passengers or crew.

Camouflage

  • Desert: Standard two-tone desert tan/olive green camouflage scheme. Used on Takistani Army-operated T-34s.
  • Olive: Dark olive green paint scheme. Only used by NAPA and rebel T-55s.

Protection

The T-34 has a base armour value of 300.

Successful strikes to any of the following highlighted sections will inflict full damage to the component:

LEGEND
Green = Hull
Orange = Engine
Light blue = Treads
Maroon = Turret

Hull

The T-34's hull can withstand up to 300 points of damage.

Engine

The T-34's engine is able to survive just 105 points of damage before failure. At least 20% of damage is shared with its main "health" pool.

Treads

The T-34's treads are able to incur 45 points of damage before breaking.

Turret

The main turret can take 300 points of damage.

Disabling it will prevent the gunner from rotating it but does not stop them from firing its weapons.

Gun barrel

The turret's cannon can withstand just 90 points of damage. No damage is shared with the T-34's "health" pool.

Disabling the gun barrel will automatically lock it and prevent the gunner from adjusting its depression/elevation.

Armament

NOTE: For specifics on the ZiS-S-53's munitions, see its related section listed here.

The gunner position handles both the primary ZiS-S-53 gun and coaxial DT machine gun. The fourth crewman (hull gunner) controls the secondary DT:

ZiS-S-53

85 mm tank gun. Can load either HE or AP-type shells.

It can reach a fire rate of ~ 8 rounds per minute (7 second delay between shots) but takes only 3 seconds to swap between shell types. It has an effective firing range of approximately 1,000 metres.

For zeroing, the ZiS-S-53 can be zeroed up to a maximum range of 1000 m (rising in 100 m increments).

DT

Base damage value Aerodynamic friction Initial velocity (m/s)
12 -0.00096 850

Coaxial/front hull-mounted 7.62 mm machine guns.

The DTs can attain fire rates of up to 600 RPM and have muzzle velocities of 850 m/s. Accuracy-wise, they have a dispersion of 0.00125 rad regardless of range. It takes 5 seconds to reload a fresh belt.

Both coaxial/hull DTs have access to the same zeroing limits as the gunner's ZiS-S-53.

Trivia

  • The in-game T-34 is limited to only a crew of four. Real-world "T-34-85" tanks are actually capable of holding up to five at a time (which the ArmA 2 model is based on due to being armed with an 85 mm gun).
