The TWS MG (full name: Thermal Weapon Sight - Machine Gun) is an infrared scope used by both NATO and CSAT forces, and in limited numbers with the AAF in ArmA 3.

Design[]

The TWS MG can toggle between two fields-of-view with fixed magnification settings: a wide FOV that has a minimum of 4x zoom[CfgWp 1][Formula 1], and a narrow FOV that has a maximum zoom of 10x.[CfgWp 2][Formula 2] The user can switch between a "normal" day vision mode and white-/black-hot thermal vision.[CfgWp 5][CfgWp 6]

Unlike the baseline scope, the TWS MG does not feature a laser rangefinder[CfgWp 7] but allows for a maximum zeroing of 1,600 m as opposed to the 1,200 m cap of its parent optic.[CfgWp 3]

The TWS MG features a simplified reticle with drop compensation markers. It is primarily intended for use on machine guns only regardless of calibre. Longer-ranged sniper rifles can also utilise the TWS MG to a degree:

  • GM6 Lynx bullpup sniper rifle (12.7 mm)
  • M320 LRR sniper rifle (.408)
  • Navid general-purpose machine gun (9.3 mm)
  • SPMG general-purpose machine gun (.338)

The reticle's markers increase in 200 metre increments, with each dot bracketed for targets at 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 metres (respectively). However, it is important to note that the markers are not tailored towards any specific calibre. Therefore, the drop compensation markers are only precise if the scope's default zeroing of 100 metres is used.

It should be noted that attaching the TWS MG onto a weapon will increase its inertia penalty by +0.2.[CfgWp 8]

AI[]

NOTE: The information in this section only applies to the AI.

The TWS MG does not have an optical sight classification.[1] If the weapon is configured with AI-only firemodes[2], AI units utilise the same firemodes as human players as well as any firemodes that do not have an optics restriction. However, they will not have access to close (type 0), medium (type 1) or far (type 2) range firemodes.[3]

Trivia[]

  • As with its parent counterpart, the TWS MG is based on the real-life "LILY-S", a lightweight thermal weapon sight designed by Elbit Systems of Israel for use on infantry small arms.[4]
  • The TWS MG was not originally available in the Alpha and was only added in the Beta's final patch (coinciding with ArmA 3's full launch as part of Game Update 1.00).[5]
